@OublietteBravo nice outfit. You have some very nice work outfits

Happierwithouthim · 25/11/2019 11:41

Went back to start of thread this morning, easier on work pc Grin and the jumper I'd admired was mrsgtobe's cashmere one from Mint Velvet.

Kiteflyingkat I did well Jan - May/June in the gym and really focused on eating well, then I went back out running the road and it does nothing for me in terms of weight loss but I love it, and have struggled since then, decided two weeks ago to make use of my gym membership again so I'm hoping I can make a dent in it between now and Christmas. I only gained about 6lbs in that time but that's a lot in your clothes.

Today I'm wearing Stacey Solomon Primark boots, jeans old high waisted and Savida knit jumper embellished with pearls, also with a thermal vest underneath sooverthemill Grin
I work in a very cold office, thermals make a huge difference to your comfort levels. Different dress code to oubliettebravo

Veronicat · 25/11/2019 11:50

@Sooverthemill You look great. Thanks for the YWA link. I must try and sort myself out but I work such long shifts that it's so difficult to even find 15 minutes to myself!
@Ellapaella I love that jumper.

Sooverthemill · 25/11/2019 11:59

@Veronicat thank you. I understand how hard it is. I have hardly any time to myself but what I do is 15-20 minutes yoga every day that I possibly can and sometimes more. It's first thing after my cuppa in my pjs ( no one sees me!) and then jump in the shower. My DD only calls me if it's an emergency! I can't do the longer sessions easily which is a drag but hoping the new 30 days yoga from January 1st won't have too many linger sessions in ( this years, dedicate, did and I couldn't do it )

OublietteBravo · 25/11/2019 12:40

There are 14 people who share an office with me, but only 3 men. This means that the temperature is usually quite warm (the thermostat is currently set to 23C). The men would prefer it to be colder - but they’re too scared to adjust the thermostat Grin

There isn’t actually a dress code as such here. I could come to work in jeans/trainers and no one would mind (especially as I mostly work with scientists who are wearing exactly that). But sometimes it’s as well to dress more smartly in the vain hope that it might remind people in R&D how senior I actually am. And obviously I have to be smart if I’m going to a hearing.

KiteflyingKat · 25/11/2019 13:33

@oubliette someone once told me “dress for the job you want, not the job you’ve got”.

My office is a total mix - some people are suited and booted and other people are actually quite scruffy. I err towards the smarter side. I figure being (slightly) too smart won’t hurt my career; being too scruffy could do

KiteflyingKat · 25/11/2019 13:36

... hit post too soon ....

and I also like to have a distinction between my work clothes and non- work clothes. Plus I have loads of smart clothes from when I worked in a super corporate environment so I just continue to wear them.

Oh and I do like that grey dress.

KiteflyingKat · 25/11/2019 13:38

@Ellapaella I do like that jumper. Like the fact it’s got sparkle but doesn’t look “bling”

Ellapaella · 25/11/2019 13:42

I would love to have a work wardrobe as I don't have much opportunity to wear more formal clothes, for example I love wearing pencil and tube skirts as I think they are quite flattering on me but they feel like they are too much for general everyday wear, dog walking etc.
I'd also like to wear midi and maxi skirts more but again feel that in the winter they are just a bit impractical for my everyday life.
I used to be able to wear my own clothes to work and I thoroughly enjoyed choosing my outfit everyday, I feel that we can project a bit of who we want to be that day through the clothes we choose to wear. Sadly now it's just uniform for me.

OP posts:
Sooverthemill · 25/11/2019 13:55

I used to love work clothes. It felt good to have smarter things that projected my personality along with my role. Wearing suits and smart stuff was useful too as ( like a@OublietteBravo) it made me feel authoritative ( even when I was winging it). In meetings with VIPs it helped! And then when I got home I could pull on my jeans and play with the kids, walk the dog etc.

Now I am only at home I really miss the work and the dressing up! I still have some of my suits and other things but I can't see how my suits can be worked into my at home life!

@Ellapaella it's a shame you have to be back in uniform. Our nurse wears Toast clothes which I love. She's never in uniform but occasionally has a stethoscope around her neck!

Ellapaella · 25/11/2019 14:01

I should love to be a Toast wearing nurse soover -ultimate nurse goals!😁
I think a lot of patients feel more at home and comfortable when a nurse isn't in uniform - I've been a specialist nurse for many years now and so don't actually do a lot of hands on nursing, what I do is very similar to Doctors and GP's who obviously do not need to wear a uniform so I'm not entirely sure the infection control argument really adds up. But hey ho, them's the rules and all that .

OP posts:
Sooverthemill · 25/11/2019 14:09

The specialist nurses in hospital all wear uniform ( with the red stripe) and it's kind of good because you recognise who to look for. Our nurse visits at home ( and comes into see DD in hospital when she's admitted) and is actually community matron now. She's retiring next year and I'm dreading it as she provides such a personal individual compassionate service to DD and to me ( she comes to give me my flu jab and last week did my bloods to save me an extra trip to clinic for my own annual cancer check up). I'd love her even if she wore a bin bag! None of our practice nurses wear uniform either but they are more joules and sea salt!

I know infection control is a big issue but surely there are ways round it ( for example, we know longer have issues with bringing DDs bedding into hospital)

KiteflyingKat · 25/11/2019 14:25

I understand that @Ellapaella . It might sound ridiculous but one thing I looked forward to about work after maternity leave was getting to put on a smart outfit and even wear heels (!) And although I like my work from home days as very productive and no commute, I like the excuse to dress up a bit for work.

I used to work with a girl in my last job who wore something a bit interesting (without being completely bonkers) every day. I genuinely used to look forward to seeing what she was wearing ~yes I know I’m sad~

Ellapaella · 25/11/2019 15:30

Not sad at all@KiteflyingKat - I totally know what you mean.

OP posts:
Softpebbles · 25/11/2019 15:30

I can dress up or be casual in my job. I’m not client facing. I do miss putting heels on and a nice dress and I like to not wear things to work that I wear out of work but it’s tricky sometimes. In that respect I’d prefer to have a uniform.

That’s a lovely jumper @Ellapaella
I’m struggling with jumpers at the moment. Hot flushes are coming thick and fast thanks to medication! I just ordered some cotton tshirts for layering so that I have something underneath when I need to strip off 🙈

Veronicat · 25/11/2019 16:41

So today I just had to get out of my pjs! Still rotten and off work but feel better for being semi dressed.
Top is Joe Brown. Thermogen leggings from Next and fake Uggs by Primarni.

Messy wet hair models own.
I am usually in uniform so it's nice not to be in it on a Monday!

Sooverthemill · 25/11/2019 19:40

Well done @Veronicat. Nice top!

KiteflyingKat · 25/11/2019 19:51

Get well soon @Veronicat

@Soover your nurse sounds fab.
I recently got rid of all but one suit - I don’t work in a very corporate environment these days. However I come across a lot of people who do and even with bankers and lawyers very few women are wearing two piece suits anymore, it’s more dresses or trousers/ skirts and top with a complementing rather than matching jacket. I hated wearing suits as they never fit quite right as my weight has always fluctuated a tiny bit.

KiteflyingKat · 25/11/2019 19:57

So this is a Mint Velvet blouse I picked up from a charity shop at the weekend for about a fiver. I really wasn’t sure when I saw it in the shop... but once I put it on I love it! That’s one thing I love about charity shops, the ability to experiment with out bankrupting myself.

  • blouse - Mint Velvet (charity shop)
  • Mac - Whistles (charity shop)
  • jeans - New Look
  • Boots - M&S

@KiteflyingKat. Dry envious of your charity shops.i popped in to ours at weekend and I did get 3 books but all the clothes were jumble sale worthy, not high end!

Today
Shirt: hush this season
Jeans: hush as yesterday

I'm a bit dull!

OublietteBravo · 26/11/2019 09:06

I’m also envious of @KiteflyingKat and her charity shops. The MV blouse is a great buy.

Jumper: Boden
Jeans: The Fold
Trainers: Jigsaw

All at least a year old. All bought in the sales. I really wasn’t sure about the trainers when I bought them - but they’ve definitely become my favourite pair. It still feels odd wearing jeans that aren’t skinny jeans.
