Sorry! I was in a meeting and dropped the ball.

Previous thread and previous rules apply!

Some accidental C&P-ing in my previous post, ignore the first "this initiative and the Together cookbook"!!

I thought accepted MN house style for quoting another poster was to put it in bold

Can anyone confirm this? It appears to be bothering @Antigonads......

banivani · 13/09/2019 12:24

Bertrand this has been my impression too since becoming a MN member some years ago. Since we can't quote posts with a nifty button, we copy paste and bold the quote (and the username). Possibly related to the way @-ing someone means automatic bolding.

But for the record I don't think it matters if it's understandable. I suppose some people could be bothered by quotation marks and think they're sarcastic, but I personally would not assume this.

Regarding what the CPV and sofia wore to the concert posted above - CPV:s metallic dress is high street (a chain called MQ) and Sofia wore higher end (but I'd say still high street), Tiger and By Malina.

Ninkaninus · 13/09/2019 12:41

Actually I think on MN the most established way is to put quotes in italics, isn’t it?

I don’t really care one way or another, tbh, and it seems rather odd to question the use of quotation marks for a quotation...

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 13/09/2019 12:42

Quotes are in bold, I think.

But all that matters is that it’s clear you are quoting.

queenofarles · 13/09/2019 12:47

No worries Bertrand Smile

I think there are brilliant charities out there that need a lot of help. Smart works is one of them. And it’s great that MM is helping them, I must confess I didn’t know of it before her visit Blush

I think Americans do it better or atleast they have better publicity or platform in reaching out,

during the summer I read about the Heavy Metal Band Metallica donating some of the proceeds of both their concerts in the uk to local charities , they donated £24k to city Harvest and magic breakfast. and over £40k to a homeless charity in Manchester. JL &S&M “donation” is meagre in comparison , and they are both big high street retailers, surely they could have made more of an effort.

Who cares how we quote people? It's a chat forum not an exam. Do what you prefer! Smile

She clearly loves the Mallorca sun doesn't she.

SenecaFalls · 13/09/2019 13:51

There are conventions about quoting on MN, but no rules that I am aware of. I see the bolding most often, but also see italics and quotation marks.

NoTheresa · 13/09/2019 13:55

Using bold type is best for indicating you are quoting. How hard can it be?

BertrandRussell · 13/09/2019 14:14

Well, for me, quotation marks for quoting and bold for bolding seems to make the most sense.........but what do I know?

QueenOfTheAndals · 13/09/2019 14:17

I'm with @AudacityOfHope, plus I have no trouble understanding what @BertrandRussell means.
Perhaps those who feel strongly about it could start a thread on appropriate methods of quoting other posters on MN and leave the rest of us to enjoy our royal style chat?

Do you mean their donation to Smartworks?
They give to other charities as well.

beanaseireann · 13/09/2019 15:08

High street retailers including M&S and John Lewis are finding trading challenging at the moment. Re their involvement in MM's charity, as the saying goes "Every little helps"

QueenOfTheAndals · 13/09/2019 15:41

M&S and John Lewis both take CSR seriously and donate millions (both money and time) to charities each year. Smart Works is just one of them.

frugalkitty · 13/09/2019 16:15

Never mind a quote option, what MN really needs is an edit button Grin

queenofarles · 13/09/2019 16:56

I’m aware M&S donate to lots of charities,

I meant with this particular charity.

Donating one Style of dress does not sound that interesting and probably no better than a rack of “lilac blazers” .
Seeing the big announcement and build up I expected more. Wish there was a bigger choice, more special designs or dresses made of good fabrics.

Wetdogloveshubert · 13/09/2019 19:42

But the point of it is to provide some baseline key pieces which SmartWorks/MM have identified as being missing from their ordinary donations. They'll be used to supplement the other clothes available to smartworks clients, and still remain anonymous as there'll be Mrs Bloggs wearing them too. Having more choice may have diluted the enthusiasm for all of the pieces, and the money available by each supplier to support the initiative.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 14/09/2019 07:01

I know John Lewis donate lots of end of season clothes.
If they had racks of « lilac blazers» the buyers would soon be out of a job.
Thé Somerset House end of year sale is a big and all proceeds go to Charity.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 14/09/2019 08:02

I'm not disappointed in the range, I think it's probably good that they are simple and reasonably generic, otherwise there might be a risk of them standing out as a Streetworks "uniform".

However one feels about MM, I think this is an initiative she can be justly proud of.

QueenOfTheAndals · 14/09/2019 08:35

Agree @Myimaginarycathasfleas. The items are basics that can be dressed up or down with accessories and different blouses etc and aren't easily identifiable.

I'm now waiting for Piers Morgan or Sarah Vine to write a column claiming to be offended on behalf of all lilac blazer owners!

BertrandRussell · 14/09/2019 08:54

Someone’s already tried to be offended on behalf of the lilac blazer donors on another thread! You never know, they might look nice with the black shift or trousers.

UrsulaPandress · 14/09/2019 09:54

I am strangely desirous of a lilac blazer now.

QueenOfTheAndals · 14/09/2019 11:08

Seriously @BertrandRussell???🙄
