I've lost count of how many threads we've had! Previous thread.

Let's keep the gossip lighthearted and, as always, stick to critiquing the clothes rather than being overly critical about the women wearing them.

Meghan's introduction is also on the flowery side but there's some good stuff in there too, namely the focus on designers from the Commonwealth and ethical/sustainable fashion. It looks like Edward asked her to be on the cover and she asked if she could guest edit instead.

I thought it was quite a bloggy style of writing too. I'm not sure how much Vogue readers expect from the editorial content. Isn't it all about the pictures?

QueenOfTheAndals · 29/07/2019 20:58

I think EE has been keen to give it a more editorial focus since he took over. Tbh I've always found Vogue a bit dull as I like a mix of fashion and stories, but haven't read it since he took over.

Crikey, that could have been a difficult conversation. How on earth would you say no?

QueenOfTheAndals · 29/07/2019 21:12

EE's intro

I'm interested to read the Jane Goodall interview. I think Harry has known her for some years and she's led a fascinating life.

I see Piers Moron is sticking the knife in in the DM. She's just not that into you Piers!

The look , cover and language are almost identical to an Australian publication of a couple of years ago for which Meghan wrote an essay. Will link when back from work.

DontFearTheReaper · 29/07/2019 21:29

Google tells me this is a young Prince Edward. He was good looking! You can certainly see Prince Philip in him I think.

Tig Archives

It is pretty comprehensive; the woman has some energy to write that whilst working on Suits and travelling.
She must have started the editing at Vogue pretty soon after they came back from the Oz / NZ tour, and after Archie was born.

QueenOfTheAndals · 29/07/2019 21:37

Edward and Andrew were both good-looking @DontFearTheReaper but it didn't last long!

Remarkably similar

Sadly I think second row, second from the right is Charlotte Dawson who took her own life after battling with depression and internet bullies some years ago.

It seems to be a Windsor trait Queen! I don’t know anyone else like this - usually after mid-30s or into middle age their looks/faces change but with them it seems to happen much earlier.

Labrodite · 29/07/2019 22:05

That is Meghan on the book cover, top row second from left!

There’s a quote from the author about the layout thing: “It's obviously very flattering, she obviously likes our concept!” she said. “I love Meghan and am a huge fan, but if what people are alerting us to is true, then it's extremely disappointing.”

Link

It is similar, but I think that kind of layout is nothing new and the ‘game changing women’/‘forces for change’ type language is just the trend of the moment.

Labrodite · 29/07/2019 22:07

Sorry, I said ‘layout thing’ but the quote is probably about the concept too.

QueenOfTheAndals · 29/07/2019 22:10

A positive piece in the Guardian about Vogue, and it points out that Meghan is not the first royal to guest edit anything. I'd forgotten that Kate guest edited HuffPo a few years ago to launch a children's mental health initiative.

Seems like shouting about the similarities in covers will get more copies of that book sold... a smart enough strategy, though a little churlish? As if black and white collage effect covers aren't that common?

I'll be buying this edition of Vogue - it's a rare enough buy to make it worthwhile to me, with the variety of interviews and photography.

Some of the comments by pp have been about wearing Gucci at Smartworks. Isn't the aim to show the power of dressing well in helping women feel empowered when getting back into work? A mix of high street and high end does that. I know @QueenOfTheAndals has said as much - Meghan does wear a mix, as does Kate and the other British RF ladies, but we're hardly going to hear a balanced view from the press.

Wetdogloveshubert · 29/07/2019 22:12

I keep cross-posting today, sorry @Labrodite! Slow internet where I am this week.

Labrodite · 29/07/2019 22:24

Not too much of a cross-post Wetdogloveshubert!

Seems like shouting about the similarities in covers will get more copies of that book sold - That is a good point actually...I did find myself thinking that it might be an interesting read!

QueenOfTheAndals · 29/07/2019 22:31

we're hardly going to hear a balanced view from the press.

The DM are really going to town on this - dragging out Piers for a comment, talking about a "backlash" that only they have invented. Even Jan Moir has reappeared! What on earth is their problem? What appeals to Vogue readers is hardly going to appeal to the reactionary little Englander types who make up their readership.

This opinion piece in the Telegraph makes some good points

Goodness me, William has that exact smile in the photo of young Prince Edward! It's uncanny. (Also, phwoar!)

The Windsor men are very good looking in their youth but they definitely age quite quickly.

Wetdogloveshubert · 29/07/2019 22:59

Thanks for the link, @QueenOfTheAndals, that's a solid article!

queenofarles · 29/07/2019 23:39

They probably get that from the Queen, she aged very quick , and remained a middle age woman for a very long time, now she looks younger than her years.
