I've lost count of how many threads we've had! Previous thread.

Let's keep the gossip lighthearted and, as always, stick to critiquing the clothes rather than being overly critical about the women wearing them.

I’m giving the vogue thing a pass, won’t be buying it. I stopped reading it many years ago. I’m familiar with the work of half the Women on that cover, so probably nothing new to me!

mathanxiety · 30/07/2019 03:32

In America wearing very expensive designer clothes to denote status is what you do.

It's not though.
Not if you want to be taken seriously by serious people.
What goes on reality TV is not necessarily a reflection of American reality.

I know many American women who are graduates of all sorts of extremely selective universities, women who have very high flying careers, and who wear what would be considered very dowdy clothes. There are many expensive brands worn by these women but the clothing itself all goes well with (very expensive) hiking sandals. It's a UMC marker.

QueenofArles
YYY to the PR person/Hillary Clinton's campaign manager - fiasco comment.

Their PR sucks and so did Clinton's. There must be a common denominator there somewhere.

Rhubarbisevil · 30/07/2019 06:37

Prince Charles guest edited Country Life, PH did a Radio 4 thing so the Vogue issue is not ground breaking. I’d like Meghan to appear on Desert Island Discs a la Princess Margaret though. That would be epic!

ElspethFlashman · 30/07/2019 07:41

That DID was absolutely savaged in Ma'am Darling. It was hilarious, I must reread it. People wrote in letters to complain about how shit it was. She just answered "Well yaars, one must do what one can" or similar to every question whilst the presenter bowed and scraped.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 30/07/2019 08:17

( I’ve no time to listen to it all right now; but love the obsequiousness of the interviewer and the curt; bored replies of PM.)
I’m wondering if it makes it into an episode of The Crown?
I bet she’s sitting there chain smoking from a cigarette holder and drinking gin!

DontFearTheReaper · 30/07/2019 08:38

I thought DID was for people who had achieved things?

BeverlyGoldberg · 30/07/2019 08:48

I don't know how I feel about MM's vogue piece.

I'm a Vogue subscriber and have been for years. I feel that I'm getting less from it than I used to. Now it feels like Edward and his mates making a magazine.

The mirror on the cover to show that I (yes little old me) is "included" in this movement really grates on me. I really don't need MM to tell me I'm included and I'm doing ok.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 30/07/2019 09:04

Royal attempts to do the unexpected often don't end well. Prince Edward and his "It's a Royal Knockout" is a case in point.

I think I read that the press were herded together in a hot tent, kept waiting and not given so much as a beer. Unsurprisingly they weren't well disposed towards him and when he asked them at the press conference what they thought of it they said "Rubbish". He was accused of storming out but to me he looked close to tears.

Rhubarbisevil · 30/07/2019 09:24

Programme idea:

The Real Merry Housewives of Windsor

Made in KP

Honeysuckleandroses · 30/07/2019 09:25

Patronising, like the messages on bananas. I will swoop in and tell you you are loveable and worth it. Yuk.

QueenOfTheAndals · 30/07/2019 09:32

Royal attempts to do the unexpected often don't end well.

Meghan isn't the first royal to guest edit something @Myimaginarycathasfleas - Charles and Kate have done the same and, given that the magazine isn't even out til Friday, how can we judge how well it's ended?

It seems like people were out to be negative from the moment the rumours about Vogue started. It's interesting to contrast it with the reaction to Kate and her garden at Chelsea. The coverage of that was positive from the get go. Even the Wrecking Ball photo was given a pass but if it had been Meghan then it would've become another stick with which to beat her!

Now that's one reality show I'd watch @Rhubarbisevil! Let's make it Wives and Husbands so that Mike's included.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 30/07/2019 09:38

I was making a general point,Queen, I didn't reference the Vogue thing at all. I've no reason to believe it will be any more or less successful than other editorships.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 30/07/2019 09:49

I would definitely watch that @Rhubarbisevil, - although given how much all the other "Real" housewives seem to scream at each other I'm not sure how great for the Royal brand it would be!😆

Rhubarbisevil · 30/07/2019 09:50

The Only Way is Tindall @QueenOfTheAndals Grin

BlingLoving · 30/07/2019 10:30

I'm interested in the royals and I love some royal watching but I wouldn't call myself a "fan" who is therefore super protective of my preferred royal. But... the abuse Meghan gets for everything and anything she does never ceases to shock me.

Yes, she's doing things that are a little different to how others might have. But for pity's sake, that' because she IS different. This idea that in order to fit in she must convert to being 100% the same as every other English White Royal Bride for the last 300 years is just mind blowing to me.

Perhaps I feel it because as an immigrant myself, even coming from an English speaking country with English parents, I still, 20 years later, get people patronisingly telling me things like, "Well, that's not how we do things in England" or some more subtle version of it. Usually for the most ridiculous things. And I've lived here long enough, met enough people, travelled enough etc to tell you that that might not be how YOU do things, but there are others who DO do it this way.

Argh. It's infuriating.

And frankly, where I come from, a charity that was about helping woman to be well dressed for interviews etc, would absolutely not blink an eye at a high profile patron turning up in a designer dress. It would be considered aspirational, not "rubbing our noses in it".

Well said @BlingLoving. It would be a little insulting if she wore high end brands for smart events but then deliberately dressed down to meet people on low incomes.

What's more important is not how she dresses when visiting Smartworks but rather how she interacts with the people using the service.

Blimey, Archie’s blanket is made in a sweatshop in India, where workers earn 0.37p an hour, lower than a typical H&M factory worker who earns $0.49 (0.40p) an hour. This is not the type of story you want to be trending when trying to preach about sustainable and ethical fashion in Vogue.

QueenOfTheAndals · 30/07/2019 11:03

How kind of the Mail to be so concerned about workers rights in India. I hope they mount some sort of campaign to improve conditions for them. I can't think of any other reason why they'd print such a story.

OP posts:
Clankboing · 30/07/2019 11:10

I agree Blingloving. We know Meghan has money and expensive clothes. She can't just suddenly dress down because she is in the proximity of the less well off! I cringe to see some of the responses to Meghan, just because she is different and doing the unexpected. I just think the Daily Mail are being pathetic now and am making a conscious decision not to follow links. They are literally bursting blood vessels over nothing and hunting for anyone and anything to criticise her for. Yes we should allow free speech but this is bullying pure and simple.

QueenOfTheAndals · 30/07/2019 11:15

@Rhubarbisevil Channel 5'a commissioning department will be giving you a call before you know it!

OP posts:
queenofarles · 30/07/2019 11:22

That’s the DM for you.
I’m pretty sure Meghan has no idea workers were paid this low and perhaps only bought the blanket because they were organic but this just shows how murky this whole fair trade business is. workers pay is the least of their concern at times.

When you push for sustainable fair trade items you must do a thorough research on everything you/your family wear, sounds crazy but sadly this is the reality of how things works .
Meghan goes for the big hot topics, and these really need a big professional team to guide you through.
