I've lost count of how many threads we've had! Previous thread.

Let's keep the gossip lighthearted and, as always, stick to critiquing the clothes rather than being overly critical about the women wearing them.

Kate has her casual uniforms; stripes navy T-shirt and skinny blue jeans for anything to do with water; beige or khaki for gardens / countryside.
Other sporting activities; black skinny jeans, new balance trainers and thin puffa jacket / zip up tight top.
Don’t know what the current name is for a Sloane; but they love a Uniform

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 29/07/2019 17:22

To me, Meghan wants to present herself as a rich celebrity who is still ‘down with the people’ . I imagine she models herself On Amal Clooney or similar

I think she is modelling herself on Diana, pure and simple. I'm sure her intentions are honourable, clearly she knows how much her husband loved his mother and no doubt she wants to please him and honour Diana's memory, but it's a risky strategy in my view.

QueenOfTheAndals · 29/07/2019 17:26

Or maybe she's just being herself?

I don’t get a Diana vibe from Meghan; if anything it’s Harry who has embraced his mother’s causes ( as it should be) to be fair to Meghan; I don’t think her interests have wavered since she made that UN speech: Feminism / Women’s rights / Girls education etc.
The points from pp’s about Americans needing clothes to show status is an interesting one. Meghan definitely has her eye on how she is perceived in the American market. I guess they ( Americans) don’t get the whole shabby aristo thing and would be horrified if they saw Princess Anne’s 30 yo rewears.

Meghan is obviously very attached to her homeland and how she is perceived there. She’s achieved a level of fame that she could not have imagined as an actress and she will continue you to court it; yes for the benefit of her charities and causes; but at the expense of her reputation in the UK.
I can definitely see Harry & Meghan spending big chunks of time overseas; attending to the commonwealth etc.

Kate wore Burberry on her Vogue cover - a $7500 suede coat and £695 trousers.

Kate chose her clothing:
"Having participated in choosing not only the clothes worn in the shoot and the locations used as a backdrop, but also the photographer who captured the images... "

Honeysuckleandroses · 29/07/2019 18:02

I wondered if she was trying to model herself on Diana with her causes, but is still trying to be an American celebrity in her dress and behaviour.
How relatable does she think she’s being though in her charity work dressed in clothes that would feed some of those women for a year?
Kate’s clothes look a lot less glitzy unless she’s at a big event. They are expensive, but generally not thousands of pounds.

thisenglishlife · 29/07/2019 18:13

We don't know the cost of Kate's clothes as they are generally custom made or altered catwalk versions by designers (Emilia Wickstead, Jenny Packham, Amanda Wakely, Alexander McQueen, etc) and are not usually off the peg. These may involve fittings or be altered by DOC's tailor. Obviously these would not be cheap but they do give that polished look.

Although, she does wear High Street and some off the peg designer wear (such as Dolce and Gabbana) too but not as much in the last two-ish years.

ElspethFlashman
"
....yeah there's no doubt Meghan has extremely expensive taste...."
I agree, considering her favourite wine is over €100 a bottle. Shock
I do think she should factor in her audience when attending events. Wearing Gucci at an event for a charity which uses second hand clothes to help people isnt very thoughtful/ considerate of her audience.
I also think she could do a lot more to promote UK designers/ fashion brands. She is taking the Queen's shilling after all.

Pics of Charlie in Scotland. Is his hair normally as white as that? It quite suits him.

QueenOfTheAndals · 29/07/2019 18:43

@beanaseireann It looks like she wore Gucci for a photo that's appearing in Vogue. For her visit to Smartworks when her patronage was announced she wore a simple black maternity dress which wasn't designer. She could wear more British designers, that's true, but she doesn't shun them either. The dress she wore to the press call after Archie was born was by an up and coming young British designer.

Kate wears plenty of pricey stuff to her daytime engagements too - the frog dress, the Gucci blouse, the endless McQueen coat dresses etc. But it's always Meghan who's pegged as the spendthrift!

Back to the wedding photos, Diana doesn’t look too happy in photo two, maybe she had more doubts than people thought.

Honeysuckleandroses · 29/07/2019 18:53

I think if you watch the documentary that was on Channel 5 the other night, the expressions and body language are quite telling.

Labrodite · 29/07/2019 19:13

Meghan’s interview with Michelle Obama has been published on the Vogue website:

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 29/07/2019 19:53

God; her writing style is a flowery as her calligraphy

thisenglishlife · 29/07/2019 19:55

The Vogue issue seems more and more interesting! Is it the September issue? If so, half of it will be ads!

I just remembered that I've got the Kate issue somewhere, must remember to look for it and have a read. Looking forward to her IOW appearance too - I like her casual looks the best :-)

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 29/07/2019 19:57

Hilarious speech by Fergie.
No Eugenie is not pregnant!

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 29/07/2019 20:00

Edward Enniful interview

It’s going to be a huge commercial coup for Vogue

ElspethFlashman · 29/07/2019 20:07

Wow. Just... Wow.

Michelle's answers are by the book, pretty generic, pretty much lifted from a hundred past speeches.

But Meghan's bit is.... Kinda cringey tbh.

Is she talking about herself here? Is she the "forward thinking chef" ? Or Edward E? Or is it Michelle? I think it's herself???

AdaColeman · 29/07/2019 20:15

I thought that image of the meal was perhaps a nod to Canadian chef Cory Vitiello! Wink

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 29/07/2019 20:22

So from that interview she put herself forward as guest editor. No shortage of self belief then.

Pieceofpurplesky · 29/07/2019 20:29

Meghan is probably just being Meghan. Poor woman can't win. If she turned up in a new look frock everyone would say she looked cheap. In an expensive dress she is wrong. She is trying to be Diana/Kate/Camilla/anyone who suits the agenda. She is full of herself/she spends too much on clothes/she rules Harry ...

What is it is women have against a strong woman (who has her own fame and wealth). Surely we should be celebrating her as someone who has given up a successful career to donate time and, inevitably, raise money via raising the profile of various causes.

QueenOfTheAndals · 29/07/2019 20:31

I've read some of the other stuff Meghan has written - the foreword to the cookbook, the article on period poverty - and neither were as OTT as this! The style of writing is quite cringey but perhaps it appeals to Vogue readers. At the end of the day, Edward has a magazine to sell and it'll be interesting to see if this works.

I see Princess Margaret in in the new Fast & Furious Hobbs & Shaw movie!
Well Vanessa Kirby who was Princess Margaret in The Crown.

What number are they up to now @JaimeBronde? I've lost count!

It is a much more similar tone to her writing for The Tig. That was always flowery and rather self-congratulatory. Never use one adjective when you could use three. But that style is 100% normal and indeed fitting for a blog. You could reason that it's a style that might feel natural for a fashion magazine too. It's not at all to my taste, but I'm just trying to be balanced and fair.

One thing I'm delighted about is the inclusion of Sinéad Burke, bottom left corner, looking all sexxxaaaay. Have long been a fangirl.

However she is also a Vogue contributing editor and a big favourite of Ennifuls. So she wasn't picked to be one of the 15 from a clear blue sky. I think she's a very worthy pick, but wonder how much of that was Meghan going "Oh yes, that WOULD be a good choice, Edward"
