I’ve always wanted to visit Scandanavia - yes, all of it! Hoping to take DS to Copenhagen as a starting point one day soon. I wanted to go Inter-railing while I was a student but I couldn’t afford it Sad The Scandi royals always seem to have it cracked too, they seem a bit more relaxed and low-key than our bunch - a bit more modern, dare I say it? Scandi posters, is that how they’re seen in-country, or is that rose-tinted Anglo specs coming into play?

Back onto topic, looking forward to the double Duchessing. Outfits! Shooooooooes!

Ninkaninus · 12/07/2019 16:00

That’s how I see them. They’re pretty cool and chilled IMO, the right mix of royal but with just enough of the common man about them. But I haven’t actually lived in Denmark in well over 20 years, so I don’t know if my viewpoint is representative.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 12/07/2019 16:02

I wonder whether Meghan.will.west Ralph Lauren again.
I will say she will be in some sort of white; linen unstructured dress and Kate will be in yellow or pink. (Something bold but summery*

AudacityOfHope · 12/07/2019 16:04

Just checking in!

Ninkaninus · 12/07/2019 16:19

On Danish royals, I think there is a lot of respect and affection for the Queen, and also for Frederik as people have seen him grow from a stroppy teenager who wasn’t very comfortable with the burden and weight of duty he had to bear and who did not get on well with the press, through to finding his feet with the army and special forces, and then finally finding his princess and building his own lovely family. I think the Royal family are generally quite well liked.

There is a great documentary about Fred on YouTube (done for his 50th birthday) but it’s in Danish without subtitles which is a shame as otherwise I’d recommend it.

Waving my hat. I was in Harrods earlier this week and saw hats v similar to DofC's (the one with the flower on one side), reduced to £729 in the sale.

Ninkaninus · 12/07/2019 16:30

Oh it does have subtitles!

This is part 1:

I’ve written loads on previous threads on the Swedish royal family and how they’re perceived. In short I think very few people respect the king, he doesn’t come across as even particularly likeable after the coffee girl scandals. But CPV and her family are I think genuinely liked and respected.

If swedes were being honest we would have abolished the monarchy ages ago, it doesn’t really fit our psyche and style of government any more. It’s a big lie we tell ourselves (not me, am not a monarchist). They get a fair amount of privacy compared to the UK. It’s distasteful to us to be raking up dirt on private lives.

GotToGoMyOwnWay · 12/07/2019 16:52

Thanks for posting that about Wimbledon @CurlyWurlyTwirly - I’m well Envy

Notmyrealname855 · 12/07/2019 16:52

Hi scandis! :) love hearing about other cultures (and royals!)

Don’t love Bea’s partner either, had heard there was “overlap” but not sure if true. Her, E and Fergie seem a lovely bunch so I hope Bea finds true happiness and a great partner! Can see her with more of a hunk tbh... the last boyf seemed a slimeball too :(

Love the title Queen!

Notmyrealname855 · 12/07/2019 16:53

Meant to give a shoutout to the lovely poster from the other thread too, who described arranged marriages so well. Very enlightening and really interesting! Love these threads :)

JohnandMary · 12/07/2019 16:54

Funnily enough I’m going to Denmark on Sunday, with a side trip to Malmo on “the” bridge. I’ll let you guys know if I spot any royals :).

Ninkaninus · 12/07/2019 16:56

Cool! Make sure you try the Danish hotdogs with all the trimmings (the best ones are the red ones) - best enjoyed out in the sunshine with a cold beer!

Ninkaninus · 12/07/2019 16:58

frugalkitty · 12/07/2019 17:06

Ninkaninus what did the Danes make of Prince Henrick's decision not to be buried with the queen (in the designated spot!)....it came across as petulance and a bit of spite at never having been given the title of King.

QueenOfTheAndals · 12/07/2019 17:08

Henrik was no DoE, that's for sure! Philip has his faults but he's always been 100% supportive of HM in public.

Thanks for new thread Queen, they move so fast!
If I was a very naughty Duchess of Cambridge or Sussex & could cope with the hoo-ha I would be very very tempted to do something completely outrageous at Wimbledon with each other.
Like have a strawberry fight or give each other a massive kiss & hold hands!
Mind you the DM would praise Kate for being kind & fun loving whilst Meg would be accused of attention seeking behaviour wrecking the match (& that's even if Kate stripped naked & sat on a shocked Meg's knee)

Swedish royals. It's quite sweet that Princess Estelle went to see Metallica with her parents.
Yet how can they justify letting them in & opening a room specially for the family so the noise levels don't affect Estelle's hearing?
Would they do this for any other under 13 year old?
Or were Estelle & her family private guests of Metallica?

JohnandMary · 12/07/2019 17:14

@Ninkaninus I’m fairly sure I can commit to that ;).

Ninkaninus · 12/07/2019 17:19

I think Henrik was quite handsome back in the day (not as good looking as Philip, though).

I don’t think Henrik was unsupportive of the Queen, just maybe a bit more outspoken in public when he didn’t like things or wasn’t happy with the way things were done.

Margrethe famously said that whilst she was Queen and had to take the lead in official matters, Henrik was always head of their household (not saying I necessarily agree with that approach to things but it seemed to work for them and perhaps she liked being able to be taken care of and not to have to be the boss at home as well, since duty makes up the rest of her existence).

Annasgirl · 12/07/2019 17:20

Queen - laughed at your comment re Freddie - 100% agree, so like a romantic poet.

banivani · 12/07/2019 17:38

In Malmö I believe one is to sample falafel. Never mind those danish hotdogs, I don’t trust them. Too red. Wink

The age 13 limit is precisely because of the sound, so if they were away from that level no laws were broken. But it is preferential treatment, they were let in on the side and a room opened for them (I’m having trouble understanding the setup and how it could be an enjoyable concert experience at all). This does not sit well with swedes who want the royals to be above us but exactly the same as us. We don’t push them though. One article and then we silently seethe our displeasure so they do better next time. It’s bad form to go over and over it in the press since Estelle is still a child. We are GREAT at burying our heads in the sand here!

Ninkaninus · 12/07/2019 17:42

😡😡

Oh my goodness I really fancy a proper hotdog now.

iknowimcoming · 12/07/2019 17:44

Can't help but wonder if all the celebs REALLY love tennis or if it's just the place to be seen?

JohnandMary · 12/07/2019 17:47

Hotdogs ... falafel ... Swedish meatballs? (Getting very hungry now while watching the tennis!)

Paradyning · 12/07/2019 17:58

@banivani what were the coffee girl scandals? I know Carl is a dirty dog but haven't heard about any coffee girls!
