Royal style & gossip: What a smashing, positively dashing spectacle - the Ascot opening day

Obviously today's the second day of Ascot but given Kate's outfit yesterday, I felt a My Fair lady tribute was fitting!

I'm going to sound really horrible but I hate that ring! I didn't realise until I just saw it! It's bloody cumbersome. I thought Meghans original ring was lovely and now looks horrible but I'd have chopped that Sapphire in half as soon as it was suggested! But as others have said, I don't have to wear it, and Kate doesn't have to worry about it getting caught in stuff when she's putting the laundry away Grin

ElspethFlashman · 24/06/2019 20:23

I'm just always suprised by how Meghan is consistently getting the optics wrong, for someone who was an Instagram Influencer.

I really thought PR would be as natural to her as breathing, but she's actually a bit crap at it.

Change your ring if you want, but for fucks sake wait a few years! It's not life or death! Christ, try to live with it for a while, the whole world is critiquing every thing you do!

DobbyTheHouseElk · 24/06/2019 20:26

I don’t think Catherine wears her engagement ring all the time. It’s too big to be practical when playing with the children. I bet she wears her eternity ring and her wedding ring together normally.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 24/06/2019 20:30

I couldn't agree more, @ElspethFlashman. It's one PR howler after another.

ElspethFlashman · 24/06/2019 20:31

She actually does seem to. There was one exciting time she was photographed without it whilst going Xmas shopping, only for it to become apparent she had twisted it around underneath, either by accident or for discretion. Why she didn't just take the bloody thing off is beyond me.

Personally I think it's batshit to wear it all the time but then I know a few women who feel naked without their great big engagement rings, so I guess she could be one of those.

Inniu · 24/06/2019 20:37

I think Meghan is just aiming her PR at a different audience, an American one.

QueenOfTheAndals · 24/06/2019 20:42

I can't get worked up about Meghan's ring - if Harry was happy then who are we to complain? Her jewellery, her business!

Kind of agreeing on the PR front, no big deal to the H&M fans, just means some of us don’t get it :) Definitely aimed at a US audience - isn’t their new foundation organised in arizona?

Smokeonthewater · 24/06/2019 20:54

Yes I think the PR is definitely aimed at America. Don’t get the sense she cares how she is perceived here.

BertrandRussell · 24/06/2019 20:58

“I'm just always suprised by how Meghan is consistently getting the optics wrong,”

It doesn’t matter what the “optics” are. She couldn’t get them right however hard she tried.

AnneEyhtMeyer · 24/06/2019 20:59

The Express (I know!) has a photo of her old rings she had in her previous marriage. She obviously missed them. Top image is the new ring, bottom one is from the former marriage.

All the vair posh women I know just wear their wedding ring day-to-day. It’s like a posh lady code: my engagement ring is so valuable it lives in the gun safe.

The emphasis on a boulder that immediately conveys your husband’s financial status is quite crass in those circles.

Notmyrealname855 · 24/06/2019 21:01

That’s basically the same ring! God maybe shake things up a little

NatureWillDeleteTheEvidence · 24/06/2019 21:02

I agree, i dont get the sense she cares what we think and is aiming at america..probably natural though given its her home? I'm #teamkate til i die tho so meghans irrelevent to me Grin (soz megs)

Laiste · 24/06/2019 21:02

blimey.

Laiste · 24/06/2019 21:03

about the previous marriage rings.

AliasGrape · 24/06/2019 21:10

Oh gosh it is very similar to her old ring isn’t it? I’m a lone voice I think in that I think the new setting looks pretty, though I have a pave set diamond band on my engagement ring so I’m obviously crass too Grin I love it though so I’m not really bothered (though my previous engagement ring in another life was a very simple solitaire and I was conscious of wanting something very different).

PinkSun9 · 24/06/2019 21:15

I think MM's new ring is a duplicate for everyday wear and her original one is kept for special occasions. Or maybe she got this new one in a bigger size as she seems to have put on a lot of weight at 5he moment. I really like her original one.

I read somewhere that Kate has a duplicate cheapo engagement ring for the same purpose.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 24/06/2019 21:20

Yes, it seems the new ring is morphing into the old ring. Clearly that's what she likes and why not.

mumdom · 24/06/2019 21:20

I wondered the same as PinkSun - could it be a ‘stunt ring’? Rings with large stones have to be taken off when washing hands, and easily forgotten behind or mislaid. You wouldn’t want to mislay a prince’s diamonds!

PinguDance · 24/06/2019 21:27

my engagement ring is so valuable it lives in the gun safe.

lol.

I don't see how MM's new ring is a PR disaster unless you want it to be. Not like she used it as a knuckle duster to punch Kate in the face. I'm still surprised Kate wears an eternity ring - I new she did and I always thought it seemed very *shock horror middle class of her.

PinguDance · 24/06/2019 21:31

Both Kate and Meghan have very thin wedding bands don't they.

mumdom · 24/06/2019 21:35

I think eternity rings may now be a fashion thing rather than a class thing. Prince Harry wears a wedding ring now, which would have been unthinkable amongst non-Catholic men a decade ago.

mumdom · 24/06/2019 21:37

Non-Catholic posh men.

Although one of my aforementioned posh friends told me posh men do wear wedding rings, but hidden underneath their signet rings.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 24/06/2019 21:38

Not in my circle. Middle class non-Catholic men have been wearing wedding rings since the 1970s.
