....ok, off the back of seeing it recommended here for plumped-up, dewy morning skin, I am volunteering myself as Guinea Pig...

I'll report back.

I put a bit around my eyes at night because my skin in that area is super dry and sensitive.

Thallo · 03/06/2019 11:36

No, the only wrinkle treatment proven to work is retin-a.

Birdie6 · 03/06/2019 11:39

Actually it doesn't block your pores or cause pimples. www.vaseline.com/us/en/articles/products-and-ingredients/will-vaseline-healing-jelly-clog-my-pores.html

Teddybear45 · 03/06/2019 11:41

Can’t use retin-A in the undereye area at the levels at which it works effectively. That’s why retinol eyecreams are often useless.

Which magazine did say for undereye wrinkles vaseline is the only thing that works.

Thallo · 03/06/2019 11:43

I'd like to see the science behind that claim.

EatenByDinosaurs · 03/06/2019 11:47

I can't use retin-A but vaseline works wonders for me, plus its very gentle.

I haven't had any increase in downy hairs, and I do find it works best if my skin is slightly damp from my moisturiser when I put it on.

I am very happy it works for lots of other people too, makes me feel less crazy Grin

Chillichutney1 · 03/06/2019 11:50

Also another side effect of Vaseline around the eyes is longer eyelashes, take a before picture and try it for a month and see the difference.

EatenByDinosaurs · 03/06/2019 11:54

Jennifer Aniston supposedly uses vaseline as eye cream.

babynugget · 03/06/2019 11:57

I think I better get to the chemist pronto. OP you may have started a surge in Vaseline sales - unheard of since the great Zoflora surge of 2019! Grin

managedmis · 03/06/2019 12:05

Make sure your skin is damp when applying and use the thinnest layer possible - do not just apply Vaseline over dry skin!! It will seal in moisture, but it doesn't provide the moisture in the first place.

^

So add a moisturiser first, then Vaseline on top?

EatenByDinosaurs · 03/06/2019 12:12

Yes managedmis your normal skincare, moisturiser, serum etc, and then vaseline on top, last of all when your moisturiser has semi soaked in, so your face is still damp.

I often use a thick layer of vaseline for amping up the slug life Grin

QuimReaper · 03/06/2019 12:21

I'm a bit confused by the Vaseline website's claims that it "absorbs deeply into the skin" but also that it forms a barrier. I always thought it couldn't be absorbed, which is why it's good for protecting your skin in winter.

thefirstmrsdewinter · 03/06/2019 13:48

Aren't most rich creams (Diprobase, Nivea etc) just petrolatum emulsified with water anyway?

At 51 the dry skin I get now is next level. Last winter in desperation I rediscovered Vaseline. The usual stuff that worked well for years (oil cleansing, rich moisturisers, buffing and trimming hands and feet etc) now has little impact. Even in my late 40s I might have thought it was a bit extreme to cover your face in Vaseline but now it seems reasonable.

I have a tiny bit of flaky skin around my nose and eyebrows, not enough to notice normally but it makes applying foundation very frustrating. It might be a touch of psoriasis, it hasn't responded to antifungals. Vaseline pretty much sorts it out. I like Skin Food as well but in the winter Vaseline has the edge. Nothing else is as good on rough cuticles.

If you want to avoid petrochemicals, imo Skin Food is the next best thing.

Soola · 03/06/2019 14:47

If you don’t like the smell of Vaseline you can by it in cocoa butter and baby powder fragrance, it’s still Vaseline but just smells nicer.
I use Vaseline to have beautiful and strong finger and toe nails and on my eyelashes to keep them strong and thick.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 03/06/2019 15:33

Those of you who apply it to your eyelashes, do you just rub a bit on or do you comb it through? Doesn't it gunk up your eyes?

Soola · 03/06/2019 16:18

No it doesn’t gunk your eyes up! You only need a tiny amount.

You can apply it using a cotton bud just as you would apply mascara.

It gives you beautiful strong eyelashes.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 03/06/2019 16:27

OK thanks. I might try it. I had visions of looking like a particularly juicy slug based on this method, but I think thin layers on the face and lashes (eyebrows work too?) will be the way to go!

MangoFeverDream · 03/06/2019 16:39

This is hugely popular on the Reddit forums (second only to Cerave in the tub) and it does work. I can’t be 🐌 life every night though, it really is awful on the pillows (and get the odd look from DH)

Coconut oil makes me break out sadly, love the smell tho

LoafofSellotape · 03/06/2019 17:09

I don't think coconut oil should be used as a moisturiser as it's comedogenic. I use it as a cleanser but wash it off with a face cloth.

I never get vaseline on pillow slips, how much are people applying?!

ElspethFlashman · 03/06/2019 17:23

It definitely seems to be absorbable. At least my aforementioned mum used to have v little trace of it in the morning and she slept on her back as I said, so it's not like it rubbed off. She had really dry skin though.

I find Weleda Skin Food much less pleasant on the skin than Vaseline actually. It's much stickier and so much harder to sheer out.

LoafofSellotape · 03/06/2019 17:27

I don't like the skin food cream, hate the smell and don't find it does anything for my skin.

NeverPutAWetFootInABirkenstock · 03/06/2019 17:29

Which Vaseline is it?

managedmis · 03/06/2019 18:03

Thanks, EatenByDinosaurs

Deadringer · 03/06/2019 18:07

I use vaseline every day and I am completely wrinkle free. I just apply a little to the lenses of my glasses before I look in the mirror, it's marvelous stuff!

Bluntness100 · 03/06/2019 18:11

There is some scientific debate but it is thought to encourage hair growth hence why it's not recommended to rub it in your face, unless you like it hairy of course.
