....ok, off the back of seeing it recommended here for plumped-up, dewy morning skin, I am volunteering myself as Guinea Pig...

I'll report back.

I remember reading an interview with Joan Collins when I was a teenager (so around 30 years ago Shock), and she claimed that all she did to keep her skin youthful was sunblock by day, and Vaseline by night. She's still with us, and has beautiful skin.

I use aquaphor rather than vaseline as my occlusive, after moisturiser and oil. It traps all the moisture in, and prevents water loss from the skin.

I use the highest strength retin-a and do a lot of chemical exfoliating and this keeps my skin nice and soft, with no peeling or irritation. You only need a tiny bit, I warm it between my fingers and pat it over my face.

managedmis · 03/06/2019 02:00

So if you have very sensitive skin and want to use a moisturizer under Vaseline, what would you recommend?

I'm a bit bamboozled, I thought Vaseline was a moisturiser

Midgey91 · 03/06/2019 02:06

What's people's thoughts on using coconut oil on your face before bed? Has anyone had any issues with spots?

FloofyDoof · 03/06/2019 02:17

I use eucerin 5% urea replenishing face cream mostly, but avene tolerance extreme emulsion is very good. It only has a few ingredients so less potential for irritation, and there is a cream version for drier skin.

Vaseline/aquaphor are occlusives, meaning that they trap moisture in your skin, preventing trans epidermal water loss, and keeping all of the moisture added by your moisturiser in your skin.

There are also humectants, they attract moisture into the skin, hyaluronic acid is a humectant, and glycerin.

Emollient moisturisers soften the skin, that's oils, fatty acids etc. Some also have some occlusive properties.

FloofyDoof · 03/06/2019 02:23

Some people are fine with coconut oil. Its highly comedogenic though. I'd get a million spots from it.

I used to use Vaseline to moisturise my face for years- nothing else worked. I am 61 with lovely skin

IMessedUpToday · 03/06/2019 05:38

Being a fan of Marilyn Monroe I can tell you that there is an apocryphal story that she used to put Vaseline on her face before bedtime. She was warned that this would cause an increase in the growth of downy hair on her face, and it was reported that it actually did. I can't confirm, obvs, but make of that what you will.

MyOtherProfile · 03/06/2019 05:46

I heard it's what Joanna Lumley uses too. No idea if that's true.

Sarcelle · 03/06/2019 06:42

Lumley is always espousing the merits of Astral not Vaseline.

Marilyn Monroes was famous for having a halo effect in her photographs. It was commentated that the halo was in face downy hair catching the light, so maybe something in that....

justilou1 · 03/06/2019 07:52

Coconut oil gives me cystic acne and my skin's normally fab. So does argan oil. Can't even use it on my hair or I get a ring of sore zits on my back and neck where the ends of my hair touch my skin.

missfliss · 03/06/2019 08:24

No pictures I'm afraid.

But yes, impressed! I also used it on my neck and chest, just wround eye sockets and cheeks and avoided chin and nose and middle of fre
forehead.

Just woke up looking plumped.

No grease and no fine lines around eyes (I'm 42 with good skin)

I'll try again tonight, this time with Vit C serum underneath rather than facial oil.

Thanks for the feedback OP. Now I have a daft question. Is the vaseline in the big tubs the same as the little tins of Vaseline lip therapy? It's all I have at the moment and want to give this a go!

missfliss · 03/06/2019 08:39

I don't think it's the same formula. The big tub was only £3 though.

Be sure to use the branded Vaseline not an own brand version. It's the only one that is triple filtered and guaranteed non comedgenic

I don't have a before ( sorry) so this is a bit redundant - but trust me when I say this area usually much more crinkly when I wake up.

No make up or moisturiser - freshly washed

Thanks - I'll try to pop to my local chemist today and pick up a big tub. Hope it works for me too!

fishonabicycle · 03/06/2019 09:19

I use vaseline overnight sometimes. It is great - seems to actually clear up spots.

Chillichutney1 · 03/06/2019 10:05

Def fishonabicycle, I used to use it directly on spots to treat them. So I’ve had a go as well after an 8 year gap and it’s as amazing as I remember, my skin just looks more plump which makes sense given that it’s an occlusive. I have lots of sleeping creams which are supposed to do the same thing but I’ve never seen as good of an effect as I do with Vaseline.

Time to use up the sleeping creams on my knees I think and go back to good old Vaseline, thanks for the reminder OP Flowers

ElspethFlashman · 03/06/2019 10:10

My mother used it at night and looked 50 when she was 70. Plump soft skin. Later in life she discovered the Burts Bees Baby version which she preferred as it was softer and had a lovely smell. She slept on her back though.

The only reason I don't do it is because I sleep on my side so would wreck my pillow. And because it would make any stray bits of hair even oilier. Sad

But I 100% believe it works, from looking at her.

goodwinter · 03/06/2019 10:14

I've done it. Helps with my eczema and dry skin.

Make sure your skin is damp when applying and use the thinnest layer possible - do not just apply Vaseline over dry skin!! It will seal in moisture, but it doesn't provide the moisture in the first place.

EleanorOalike · 03/06/2019 10:34

Don’t go near any naked flames! We know someone who did this and got set on fire whilst blowing out a candle.

Lovemynewboots · 03/06/2019 11:29

I haven't tried it as a moisturiser, but for me its the best eye makeup remover. The skin around my eyes stings like bugger these days if i use anything else. I just massage a small amount around my eye and gently remove with a cotton pad or soft cloth Smile

Teddybear45 · 03/06/2019 11:31

Yes, I think i read somewhere that the only anti-wrinkle ‘treatment’ that is scientifically proven to work is vaseline / petrolium jelly every day.
