Do countries without monarchs have State visits or is it just a royal thing? So for example would M Macron make a state visit to Germany? Feel completely ignorant on these matters Grin.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 05/06/2019 22:13

Yes they do.

It's the President as a head of state who would be the host in that case.

My DH forwarded this pic to me because he likes a chess joke. I said I would try and add it to our thread.
I can't seem to find a way to attach it but it is

Yes they do. Most if not all countries have a head of state, whether that person is the executive branch (as in Russia, France, USA) or an office holder with basically a representative function (Ireland for example, in very general terms).

If DT were in Ireland for a state visit he would have been met by President Michael D. Higgins.

Funny how today Gove said that he'd only had "only a few words" with Donald Trump on Monday. Sarah Vine rather made it sound more than it was.

Obviously you can be less honest in the DM than you can when asked directly by MPs.

Going back several hours, is that really Angela Merkel in the silver bacofoil outfit? My god, she looks AMAZING in a good way.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 05/06/2019 22:28

Angela Merkel has some nice evening gowns. (Rather startlingly; one with quite a bit of cleavage! Good on her!)

@mathanaxiety

Bozo and Boor would be ideal for the Trump sons.
I’ll go easy on Tiffany Trump as she’s so often sidelined.
She can be Bambi as she looked like a deer in the headlights in every photo.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 05/06/2019 22:40

On the tail end of the US visit; I just want to post some of Michelle Obama’s evening gowns. I would wear every single one

Even More Michelle Obama evening gowns here

Spudlet · 05/06/2019 22:52

Barack always strikes me as a man who can't quite believe his luck with regard to his wife - rightly so as well! She's an amazing woman - so poised and intelligent, and she looks amazing.

Love Angela Merkel's evening wear - she looks really good! That green colour, in the first dress and the wrap, really suits her.

QueenOfTheAndals · 05/06/2019 23:13

The rose gold Versace is my all-time favourite Michelle O dress. If Obama was a hard act to follow, she's an even harder one.

Really surprised by Angela Merkel's gowns, I've never seen her in anything other than her trademark trouser suits before. She looks good!

I hate Angela Merkel's suit jackets.i think they're so unflattering.its the necklines.
Thought TM looked decidedly goof compared to the norm today. She's feeling relief and brightening up her life maybe!! A definite improvement IMO.
I did like Melania's coat. I want one of those please- although terribly impractical with a toddler😜.

QueenOfTheAndals · 05/06/2019 23:21

Tracy Ullman does an hilarious .

I agree that Angela's evening gowns are surprisingly glamorous - she seems to have this nailed!

Thanks for posting the Michelle Obama gowns @CurlyWurlyTwirly - seeing her - seeing them both - has really cheered me up. It's hard not to feel depressed by the current crop of politicians - here and in the US. Buffoon and family are really a low point in public life I feel. Love their new names!

I love Michelle's gowns (her day outfits were great to on the whole from what I remember) they are classic with out being old fashioned I would love Kate to dress more like her. I'm not sure she has the same figure so some probably wouldn't work but in principle, it would be lovely if she took some inspiration from her. She was (still is I'm sure but we don't see is so much now) great for fashion watching.

I completely agree both were hard acts to follow in their own right!

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 06/06/2019 00:51

The Obamas are such a class act. The Trumps are - not.

managedmis · 06/06/2019 01:20

Madeleine is beautiful, I love that skirt.

managedmis · 06/06/2019 01:21

And Michelle is stunning in that purple number.

They are so cute together, are her and Barack ❤️

managedmis · 06/06/2019 01:24

Very funny, glam. Especially the one about donated clothes Grin

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 06/06/2019 05:53

Prince William looks unbelievably handsome here

IHeartArya · 06/06/2019 05:56

It’s scary how politics has changed. I know this is S&B but it makes me so worried for the future. You have the likes of Johnson & Farage. Give me the RF over that any day!
