She's probably not stupid @UrsulaPandress but who knows how far she would've gone without her father's name and money? Same goes for her brothers.

Phew! Finally caught up with the thread after 2 days!

A few things. There’s a return dinner at the US residence this evening. Not sure how many Royals will be attending, but there will be more frocks.

Ivanka’s Carolina Herrera shirt dress. I’ve been reading about her and Trump is grooming her for politics, possibly a future president.
Her outfit; I think was picked so that it would stand the test of time. If she becomes president and visits the UK, then that photo will be wheeled out decades from now; like Jackie Kennedy’s.

I think it is “masculine” evening wear in the style of Margaret Thatcher or Hillary Clinton; marking her out as an independent woman. No matter what I think of her (father’s) politics, this is a good thing. I thought it was significant, that when walking in; she was not holding the arm of the man next to her. Also she was seated next to Sophie, not another man.

Other thoughts, Tiffany Trump looked like a saloon girl from the Wild West.

I liked Rose Hanbury’s silk gown. Very 1930s. Thanks for the find @itswinetime.
Is there any significance in her wearing now jewellery and a very plain dress compared to previous years. Purdah?

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 04/06/2019 14:36
  • not wearing jewellery. Tiaras are only worn by married women. I can’t see the Cholmondeleys upsetting the apple cart uneccesarily. They’ve got the heirs. They could just have a marriage of convenience like many aristos.
myrtleWilson · 04/06/2019 14:42

@itswinetime - the blog linked to upthread suggests it was the wife of the man she was walking in with (US Treasury bod)

SlipperOrchid · 04/06/2019 14:45

Charles looks very elderly.

I don’t often feel sorry for the RF but having to spend a night with the Americans makes me pity them.

SenecaFalls · 04/06/2019 14:48

the wife of the man she was walking in with (US Treasury bod)

Louise Linton; she's Scottish and an actress. I'm surprised that she wasn't escorted in the procession since her husband was. Not sure how that works.

itswinetime · 04/06/2019 14:49

I'm not sure It could simply be a fashion choice it's was a simple minimalist gown and she thought it looked best with out jewls?

Maybe knowing the American guests don't have tiaras they felt it was best if not everyone was wearing one?

The wedding ring can only be explained by pregnancy or marriage problems I would have thought.

Interestingly she walked into a DM journalist so make of that what you will...

Can any of you eagle eyed experts spot who is in the red dress in this photo I'm fairly sure that's who Kate shock hands with and I'm trying to figure out who she would have broken formation for to do that.

Ahh you have all Solved it while I was searching for photos thank you! I guess it makes sense as he would introduce his wife!

SenecaFalls · 04/06/2019 14:51

Tiaras are only worn by married women.

Which I have to say, is a really bizarre and outdated rule. So you have to have snagged a husband to be entitled to head bling? I assume it doesn't necessarily apply to royals. Anne and Margaret wore tiaras before they were married.

Christ, it's going to feel like the longest 3 days of their lives! 😱

RhubarbIsEvil · 04/06/2019 14:53

Two nights - tonight as well. What will be in the menu? Buffalo Wings and Key Lime Pie?

QueenOfTheAndals · 04/06/2019 14:55

I don't think the royals will be attending the dinner tonight, will they?

OP posts:
itswinetime · 04/06/2019 14:56

Only Charles and Camillia are down to attend tonight on behalf of the queen so not sure if any other royals will be out and about.

SenecaFalls · 04/06/2019 15:01

Buffalo Wings and Key Lime Pie?

Don't be dissing these delights. DH is from Western New York and we live in Florida. Wink

AdaColeman · 04/06/2019 15:05

The tiara that Rose wore to a previous State Banquet is the family Ancaster Heathcote tiara, at present owned by Baroness Willoughby de Eresby.
The tiara has been in the family since at least 1786, with the central stone having been taken from the sword of the Duke of Perth who died at Culloden in 1745.

IHeartArya · 04/06/2019 15:18

I’m in awe of all the knowledge imparted on this thread!

BlingLoving · 04/06/2019 15:23

I just watched the procession. When they come into the hall, there's an older woman in purple who curtseys to all the royals. She's wearing a sash so clearly known. She totally nails the proper deep curtsy!!!

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 04/06/2019 15:33

If Trump did drink then he'd probably talk more sense.

UrsulaPandress · 04/06/2019 16:11

Mmmm Key Lime Pie

Laiste · 04/06/2019 16:19

Had no high expectations of Camilla or PM ect, but did expect a bit of wow from Kate and was disappointed. When you think of the exquisite designs and fabrics available! Last night's dress reminded me of one of these:

angstridden2 · 04/06/2019 16:21

Why does HM always wear black shoes and carry a black handbag, even with pretty Summery outfits? I’m pretty sure The Royal Shoemaker could rustle up some different shades.

Tinkhasflown · 04/06/2019 16:22

I'm definitely in the minority here, but I really liked Kates dress last night! For me though, the best dress of those I saw was Jeremy Hunts wife.

I think comments on Melanias tummy are a bit unfair, it may well have been post flight bloat that I always get too. Regardless, she has a fabulous figure.

SlipperOrchid · 04/06/2019 16:23

He order about twenty boxes of sandwiches yesterday. A reporter here took great delight in smirking about it. Sandwiches all round for the RF?????

SenecaFalls · 04/06/2019 16:26

Yes, she should get herself some light-colored two-toned low-heeled Chanelesque pumps a la Camilla.
