I'm growing it in from shaving it,I have no bleach left in it now.

Gunuine - your hair is bloody lovely and looks like the expensive ash blonde colour I pay hundreds of pounds to try and achieve!

MillicentMartha · 23/05/2019 21:02

Some really lovely hair. I was on that head shave thread, but I couldn’t bring myself to shave mine, face too chubby. I have grown it out the hard way. The back is dark grey, the front is much lighter.

Cocolapew · 23/05/2019 21:42

Bendydick my natural colour was very dark brown. Going Gorgeously Gray on facebook has a lot of people growing dye without cutting.
That's gorgeous drboo and Millicent.
I went to pick DD up from the airport earlier and saw a woman with a silvery grey bob, it was bloody lovely. The amount of different shades in it was lovely.

Bendydick is your hair undyed? If so don't do a thing!

I have joined the grey club, DO NOT miss the faffing of having to keep colouring it.

I'm 36 with a fair amount of white and grey in my otherwise mousy brown hair. I've stopped dying this year and am just going with it.

I nearly caved last week but this thread has encouraged me to stick with it!

BackforGood · 23/05/2019 21:57

I wouldn't mind being a lovely grey like so many of these pictures, my issue is that my hair is probably 1/2 dark brown and half grey, and it just looks 'old' and messy, not in any way elegant.
Have seriously considered getting the brown coloured grey Confused

My hair is very dark and I cant seem to get past the grey stripe phase before having to dye it again. It makes it worse as I look balding when the roots are grey...suggestions?

Photo would help...

PaulHollywoodsleftbollockhair · 24/05/2019 04:50

Bly that is why I whack mine off. Firstly I tried to strip all the colour out and tone it grey. This did not work well and despite getting it bleached to a very pale yellow the toner took on a green hue. The ends of my hair turned into the texture of a dandelion clock and snapped off.

I then trimmed it to about an inch all over but once the roots starting growing in they didn’t match so I grasped the nettle and shaved it off. Not an option for most admittedly.....

I think your options are toughing it out until you have enough natural regrowth that you can have a short haircut or a long grow out. If you go with the getting as much length as possible before a short hair style you can use touch up products/crayons that wash out to ease the transition. Also good are hair bands.

There is no easy, quick solution to this though. I think you have to be so sick of the dye and the faff involved in the upkeep that you reach a tipping point and think -fuck this it is no longer worth it to me.

Personally my hair needed dying weekly, would often not colour over the white bits or when it did would go jet black despite using brown dye.I also had the obvious dye stains on the skin around the temples to deal with - so am kidding no one!

EXcuse typos- menopausal insomnia alert 😁

Seahorseshoe · 24/05/2019 05:06

I keep growing it out so far and chickening out. I have a plump face, I think it'll make me look washed out, blah, blah, blah. I'd love to bite the bullet and chop it off but fat face puts me off.

I am fairly dark - fake and real dark, I'm thinking of having some honey highlights put it, so it's not as dark, building them up whilst my grey comes in, maybe going lighter each time?

You all look wonderful ladies. And kudos to op for shaving it.

EraOfTheGrey · 24/05/2019 07:41

My attempt to smooth over the agony of embracing grey started with bleaching hair. As you can see from the photo I still ended up with a terrible root problem.
I then moved to cutting it short with an undercut but I didn't enjoy the tone between the grey and the bleached bits.
Finally, I grabbed my DH's clippers and gave myself a #3 buzzcut.

My hair has grown now as you can see up thread.

Looks great!

princessbear80 · 24/05/2019 13:28

Would love to go grey. I think you all look fabulous. I don’t think short hair suits me. So I’m interested in the idea of hair bands to help with the transition. Any photo examples please?

keepingbees · 24/05/2019 18:14

@BlythesEyes your roots look like mine I'm very dark. I've started using Superdrug colour effects wash in wash out dye. I put it on my hair dry for stronger colour but you can just use it as a shampoo. It doesn't completely cover the grey but tones it down, blurring the stripe. I'd maybe try the brown then progress to the blonde.

BlythesEyes · 24/05/2019 18:29

Ooh...thanks for the advice! My face is also too fat for a really short cut, the thought makes me twitch!! I have loads of thick strong hair in good condition so just need to carry on with colouring. When I reach that 'arrrghhhh' moment I will eventually have to decide it's time.... not sure what time of year is best. I have a customer facing role and the thought fills me with dread.
I will try that superdrug stuff though ...just to see...
Watch this space (but probs after the summer!)
Wink

I'm about a week away from shaving the lot off for the same reasons.

Just got a reunion coming up this weekend and then I think I might go for it.

Everyone's grey hair looks fab.

I'm going down the stripey curly hair look. It's weird having been dark haired for 40 years to now have speckled hair with lighter bits.

Sturmundcalm · 24/05/2019 18:55

for folk who shaved theirs off, how long does it take before you have a reasonable amount of hair?? i have a "public" job and think folk at work would have a meltdown if i appeared with no hair, but i have 2-3 weeks off in the summer and can probably add on another 1-2 weeks of lower key work...

and thanks to @ChopOrNot and @doctorboo for posting pics. one of the things that has always put me off is that these threads tend to have folk with pixie cuts or really straight thick bobs and i know that my curls aren't going to do that so great to see folk with a wave/curl going for it!

Cocolapew · 24/05/2019 18:56

Princess its really just a head scarf tied to hide any roots. If you are on Facebook join Going Gorgeously Gray, it's got loads of posts about going grey with long hair.
Pinterest is also really good to see transitioning photos.
I think after a while it stops looking like you need to get your roots done and becomes obvious that you aren't going to dye it Grin

Cocolapew · 24/05/2019 19:01

Sturmund it depends on how close you were planning on shaving it. You could use a number 6 or 8 and still have a decent about of hair.
I did a number 2, I always have really short hair and used to shave it when I was young so it didn't bother me.

OP posts:
Cocolapew · 24/05/2019 19:08

This is probably a number 4 or 5.
Longer one is about a 3 at the sides.
The undercut is 2.
