If you could only do one anti-ageing thing for your face (apart from sunscreen) what would it be? I am so overwhelmed by all the things I should be doing I want to know what people think are the absolute musts.

Apart from spf, this

NewAndImprovedNorks · 06/04/2019 21:29

Don’t smoke

Ninkaninus · 06/04/2019 21:34

Quit alcohol and sugar, and get a good sleep every night, plus keep my face out of the sun.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 06/04/2019 21:38

Retinol

SelkieRinnNaMara · 06/04/2019 21:43

Interesting question. I am interested in those capsules! So you reckon they're worth it @fstar, I don't do anything expensive but I'm tempted.

I'm late forties and I've always used a high spf so my skin is very even I think, but the jowls are beginning to appear. I think keeping everything simple is more youthful. All of the imperfections that were quirky and charming at 25 are just more flaws at 50 ish so I had moles removed and I look after my teeth like my life depends on it.

Sunglasses all year round.

When I moved from London to Wales I got a lot of odd looks at wearing sunglasses in the winter as not many people here do, whereas it's commonplace in London.

I love my sunglasses and they do protect the skin around your eyes and help prevent crows feet etc.

PositivelyPeach · 06/04/2019 21:58

Botox (with a light touch and appropriate to your age)

Sorry, I cheated a bit

Amrapaali · 06/04/2019 21:59

Yoga

DarkDarkNight · 06/04/2019 22:20

As somebody beat me to retinol I will go with acid toning.

Strongteaplease · 06/04/2019 22:26

I already do it! Botox and a tiny bit of lip filler! It's knocked at least 15 years off meSmile

bingohandjob · 07/04/2019 07:43

Cut back on sugar and be aware of sugary drinks and fruit.
Walk an hour day (SPF).
Cover up in the sun, not just SPF.
For me, cut back on wheat.
Don't smoke.
Decent sleep.

bingohandjob · 07/04/2019 07:45

Palominoo, same with the sunglasses. I'm very sensitive to bright light (can trigger migraines) but side effect has been that it's really had a positive impact on my skin which I really notice now in my 40s and lots of people have commented on.

Fstar · 07/04/2019 09:32

@selkie i tried the capsules through debenhams beauty member, they gave me 7 days worth. I use decent skincare to start with (temple spa) so my skin was good but adding these capsules my skin felt amazing. I wasnt sure about spending that much as i already spend a fair amount on skincare so waited until the 25% off on the website and got them. Im almost 40 and have really looked after my skin the last few years so no wrinkles etc yet a d skin pretty even.

Recently tried spf50 from the body shop, its the best ive ever used

plotmissinginaction · 07/04/2019 10:18

I don’t drink or smoke and I do yoga and eat pretty well so I guess I’m doing some things right. I’m a bit depressed about my looks at the moment though and I don’t think I could afford Botox. Makes me feel a bit hopeless 😩

I'm in my fifties and notice that naturally fair people who have spent time in the sun are much more wrinkled than those who didnt. This isn't necessarily the case for more olive skinned people.
But mostly it's genetics.

Langrish · 07/04/2019 10:38

Don’t smoke and eat/drink plenty of oily fish/water.

juneau · 07/04/2019 10:39

Yes, I agree with bingohandjob, plus all those things are pretty much free (although wheat-free diet does cost a bit more). But sleep is a huge one. If I'm tired it adds years to my face. Sun damage is the single most aging thing for skin, so wear SPF year round - it can even reverse previous sun damage!

Alsohuman · 07/04/2019 10:41

Completely agree @Delphinium. Black skin seems to stay young for ever. I’m deeply, deeply envious. Another vote for sunglasses here.

LizzieSiddal · 07/04/2019 10:47

Don’t smoke, don’t drink too much alcohol and get lots of sleep.

I agree that we shouldn’t all be lying in the sun for hours without an SPF however for most people who are just dashing about during a normal day, spent mostly inside, SPF isn’t necessary as you won’t be in the sun too long.

LizzieSiddal · 07/04/2019 10:49

And to add to my last post, Drs are already advising that all people in the UK get around 20 mins a day, sun exposures, without SPF. This is to ensure we get enough natural Vit D.

JimJamTimTam · 07/04/2019 11:19

Can someone explain retinol to me? What is it?

Chocolateisfab · 07/04/2019 11:25

Don't have dc.
Don't get married.
Sorry that's 2!!

SelkieRinnNaMara · 07/04/2019 13:00

@fstar, i might give them a try! I have a 30 year reunion to go to later in the year!

I hope there is nobody under 30 on this thread!!

princessTiasmum · 07/04/2019 13:28

Dr Chris said last week on this morning that no one should use sp50 as it has additives which do more harm than good,sp30 is enough he said

AwdBovril · 07/04/2019 13:32

Sun protection. So, for me, that's usually hat, stay indoors when it's hot, walk in the shade. In summer / whenever I remember (not always), a decent SPF.

I am 38, no wrinkles at all. I only started wearing moisturiser about 4 years ago.
