If you could only do one anti-ageing thing what would it be?

If you could only do one anti-ageing thing for your face (apart from sunscreen) what would it be? I am so overwhelmed by all the things I should be doing I want to know what people think are the absolute musts.

His name is Dicky. Dicky Attenborough.

He doesn’t hold much truck with beauty products and will often stare at me in puzzlement as I apply make up.

He’s also very suspicious when I get in the bath and looks horrified at the bubbles as he stands up to peer over.

My whippets however are quite vain and love a bit of pampering. One of them thinks he’s on a par with a Vogue model.

SPF is the game changer, I have very fair skin but no wrinkles because I had a sun allergy in my 20s kept out of the sun. I was laughed at for my pasty skin but not now.

I read somewhere retinol in your 30s and beyond, thought that sounded sensible and have been doing that ever since, apart from pregnancy and breastfeeding (which looking back, was 7 years !). I too wear sunglasses as soon as the sun makes an appearance winter or summer but I have very sensitive eyes.

I have face massager and try to kiss the ceiling exercise 50 times a day to keep the jowls at bay but often just forget.

Blimey those micro needle things look like instruments of torture!

millythepink · 09/04/2019 12:00

I wear sunglasses whenever the sun shines because otherwise I squint and it gives me headaches. Luckily my sunglasses don't actually clamp my mouth shut so have no problem actually, you know, talking with people.

Oh your whippet is so elegant. He looks like a debutante posing for Sir Cecil Beaton! Grin

FurrySlipperBoots · 09/04/2019 12:05

For me it would be dermaplaning. I've had it done twice in about 6 months, due again soon. It removes peach fuzz and mustaches! Plus it's generally exfoliating and allows moisturizer or anti aging cream to penetrate deeper.

Bowchicawowow · 09/04/2019 12:07

I am laughing my head off that some woman has put sunglasses on her pug to prove she isn’t vain for wearing sunglasses all year round in Wales or Scotland.
Oh hang on though. I shouldn’t laugh. Laughing causes lines that is a bad thing.

Seriously though, I am sure you are all lovely and fantastic in real life. I just find your world a bit bewildering.

Daily Suncreen, spf 50.

Drookit · 09/04/2019 12:47

@bibbitybobbityyhat What Facial Exercises? I need to know.

Delatron · 09/04/2019 12:48

Sorry! I think of fine lines as different to deep set wrinkles.

Obviously most people have fine lines from early 30s. I see wrinkles as different.

AnnabelleLecter · 09/04/2019 14:05

Look after your teeth. It makes you smile a lot.

SelkieRinnNaMara · 09/04/2019 17:41

I agree annabel lector i only got braces in my 40s and faced a bit of "at yr age!?" from my parents, but i feel i need good teeth more than ever now.

SelkieRinnNaMara · 09/04/2019 17:42

Can anybody link to a good five minute or less face yoga routine on youtube??

deadsexy · 09/04/2019 20:55

Botox

Langrish · 10/04/2019 08:29

“Botox”

Nooooooooooo. Don’t do it 😱

plotmissinginaction · 10/04/2019 09:08

Why? I mean I can’t afford it but apart from that everyone seems to like it. Or that’s the impression I get but possibly only because I can’t afford it!

SelkieRinnNaMara · 10/04/2019 18:42

I had it a few times but it made the wrinkles under my eyes worse.

Obviously you could say that is ageing and im only heading in one direction, but i felt the deterioration under my eye was not gradual. It was noticeably worse shortly after the 3rd and last time i had botox.

Gwenhwyfar · 10/04/2019 18:47

Isn't it true that botox and fillers are only temporary anyway? How rich would you have to be to keep forking out for it every six months or something for the rest of your life?

onthebonnybonnybanks · 10/04/2019 18:49

I’ve just started using retinol and it’s wreaking havoc with my skin (redness, flaking/ peeling) basically feels like I mild sunburn Confused
Other than that I’m trying to drink lots of water, wear spf and sunglasses (mainly so I don’t squint and end up with terrible crows feet)

SelkieRinnNaMara · 10/04/2019 18:50

Well it is 250 euro where i went so .... yeh it is not cheap exactly but i used to not buy clothes or make up that month.

Gwenhwyfar · 10/04/2019 18:50

Onthe - you're getting that with normal retinol or do you mean the real thing, retin-A or retirides or something? I've never had a reaction to retinol sold in creams and serums over the counter in this country.

JDSTER · 10/04/2019 18:54

@plotmissinginaction I use Medik 8 Crystal retinal. They do range of various retinols/retinoids of high quality.

misscockerspaniel · 10/04/2019 19:23

I only started wearing sunglasses about 4 years ago, proper ones that block out the UV rays. I had my eyes tested yesterday and my eyesight is better than it was 20 years ago - my optician said it was very unusual for eyesight to improve with age Grin It might be a coincidence but I reckon it is down to the sunglasses Smile

Delatron · 10/04/2019 19:34

I’ve had the same issue with Botox. Great for crows feet but since the muscles there are relaxed I use my under eye muscles more (scrunch my eyes and nose up) so it’s creating more wrinkles under my eyes which look worse than the crows feet!!

Can’t wait for it to wear off.

RosaWaiting · 10/04/2019 19:55

Ruffle not sure your joints have to be bad, do they?

My uncle is 83. He lifted weights till he was about 75. Now he sticks with walking, yoga and uses Nivea cream (can't stand the smell myself) and he looks about 70 maybe. Has more energy than I do!

I think the years of weight training did him a favour as others in the family have osteoporosis (I do weights too in order to hopefully avoid that).

my late father was a big fan of Nivea too - what is it with men and Nivea, is there loads of marketing or something - and he had such soft unlined skin it was freaky! I am so hoping to inherit genes from that side of the family.
