I'd wear black lace to a summer ball, could be very dramatic and different. Nothing wrong with standing out. :)

banivani · 13/06/2019 10:27

I count paisley as a floral most of the time, but only if the pattern is small – it’s stylized flowers and plants isn’t it? But the big ones become something else. I cannot claim total logic in this.

I have no hopes for the ruffles disappearing, sadly. When it comes to paisley they seem to revive the 70s via ruffles. I have a beautiful paisley wrap front top that doesn’t fit anymore but it’s lovely and I keep it because of that.

Thank you for shopping tips all of you – I agree I will not be queuing for Sézane, sounds like a nightmare. On the whole, while I like accidentally buying things on holiday (I like clothes as souvenirs) I don’t like my travelling being consumed by looking for things to buy. So if I stumble past Sézane and there’s no queue… (likely story) Since I’m committed to losing some weight now I’ll be treading lightly in the sales.

I am very fussy with patterns. You wouldn’t know it to look at me, but I am. Sadly I most times end up settling, but really, I am. The florals have to be right, the paisley can’t be too brash … On myself (not in general, just on me) I don’t like polkadots, I don’t like starkly geometrical prints, and, sadly, I don’t like stripes either. This last one is a real bummer, because it means that all those lovely shirtdresses like the one posted by Red are out - and those are the only ones available. But thank you!!! It’s 100% my sort of thing in theory. But stripes. And even when plain the colours are often that lovely summery light blue that looks like shite on me. A lot of nice shapes these past few years have played with using classic shirting fabrics. They don’t move on and make the shapes in other fabrics, so I lose out.

Officially of course I’m very easygoing and easy to please. And flexible. Grin

Nice to see photos from Elle and Bo there. I’ve seen the silk dress from Stories, it’s a lovely one. The navy dress is really nice, Elle.

Red black lace at a summer do ... why not? Depends maybe on the lace. I would want it fairly matte maybe? "Cottony". Not the glittery polyester sort that say's new years eve. Maybe fresh flowers in your hair, and sandals on feet.

Re my health: By the time I get to the sun the rash might well have disappeared by itself… I’m getting increasingly annoyed and feeling badly looked after by the medical profession, because I’m pretty sure guttate psoriasis fits the bill, brought on by throat infection, and if they’d listened to me, tested my throat and given me antibiotics when I rang them first it might never have happened. The first doctors I met have mentioned it in my journal as a possibility, they just were not sure. Why not test my throat do start ruling it out/confirming possibility? The thyroid discrepancy is quite small, and while it may be affecting me in other ways I don’t think it’s causing the rash tbh.

Elle We do our passports here at the police office, who also take the photos in a machine. Vanity does NOT come into play haha.

Exciting news from my inbox, Ami Paris is selling their women's collection online for a limited period:

www.amiparis.com/nl/sets/pre-order?utm_campaign=20190613_THU_PREORDER_EN&utm_medium=email&utm_source=Ami&utm_term=348706922

It's exclusive access -whatever that may mean- so I hope the link works. It's pre-orders for A/W. I'm currently drooling over the green trench but I'd need to be a good bit taller, I fear. Trousers are looking enticing too and pixelated florals. Not that I can carry off a pattern that large.

Bani the Ami Paris shop may be worth visiting for you. It's slightly more affordable in the sales (June 26th onwards). They go up to a FR44 but it definitely comes up big. The women's store is in St Germain, I'll look up the address in a bit.

Will catch up properly later.

😂 you make me laugh Bani (in a good way)

banivani · 13/06/2019 18:03

😂
Although the green trench is gorge and so are the wide trousers 😍

CatherineMaitland · 14/06/2019 10:37

M&S (don't throw me off the thread) have some nice-looking plain shirt-dresses this year - some in silk and some in linen or linen mix. I have bought a couple to try out. Agree on the light blue bani - looks bad on me too. I really like the colour as well but it just looks awful on.

Floisme · 14/06/2019 11:54

That trousers and jacket combo is jut how I look - in my head Grin

I've heard good things about M&S this season Catherine although they haven't filtered through to our local store yet.

Well I've started checking out bad weather coats for winter Shock Not the right time of year I know but this week has made me realise how great my Protected Species mac is and how I really haven't got an equivalent coat for winter - well I have (Seasalt) but I don't like it.
I've been wondering whether to try and save up for a Barbour, which I know is very Queen at Balmoral but I quite like that look (and I notice Alexa Chung does too). But I'd want something knee length - I've never seen the point of a water proof jacket that ends mid thigh - and with a hood.

banivani · 14/06/2019 12:11

I have this mental image of myself as quite tall and potentially willowy, which is just a refusal to admit that my rather short waist will never make me thus haha, so I can definitely see myself wafting along in that trench and those trousers ....

I think there were a lot of things in M&S that looked quite nice, but I'm a tryer-oner and not a webb-shopper.

Floisme · 14/06/2019 12:51

Me too. I used to buy a lot of clothes online but now I do it as little as possible unless it's a brand I know reasonably well.

quirkychick · 14/06/2019 13:51

That green trench is very gorgeous. bani, I'm sure a lot of us have visions in our head of what we look like that might not be quite the same as reality Grin.

Redandblue11 · 14/06/2019 17:21

I cannot believe anyone looks bad on light blue!
I know, I know...

So Bani you made me share that photo of me looking like s** in that shirt dress for nothing.

Next week I will have to take dresses out and choose the right one for the ball. I love a good black tie ball. Not that I go to many these days.

Redandblue11 · 14/06/2019 18:23

Flo, I agree that a good quality coat is priceless (specially in this country).
I do like the Barbour look in the right person and I imagine you carrying that out very well.
In a different look, have you checked Parka London, I have an old winter short coat and is the warmest item in my wardrobe and I love it, I am not sure how much they have in terms of long coats but maybe keep an eye.

banivani · 14/06/2019 20:31

Red no one made you do anything ☝️

XingMing · 14/06/2019 20:45

Sorry Red, I look like death warmed up in pale blue. I know it's universally flattering, but it doesn't work for me. I just look dead.

banivani · 14/06/2019 22:18

I’m actually starting to wonder if Ive been imagining things and Red is right. I was wrong about jumpers. Maybe I can wear a pale blue? Going to have to try it in the shops with one of my daughters there dine for an honest opinion.

Floisme · 15/06/2019 10:07

I'm afraid I'm not a fan of pale blue either. I find most pale colours wash me out.

Good suggestion about Parka London Red - thanks. I'm not convinced I could carry off a Barbour to be honest - I think it's a very fine line between what looks good and what doesn't. But providing I manage to save up some money, I'm going to look again in the autumn. Annoyingly I could wear a different wool coat every day of the week but I've never nailed the cold, wet weather look which is a bit remiss when you live in the UK.

quirkychick · 15/06/2019 14:55

I really like pale blue, but it's a very cool toned colour, so I can quite easily imagine it not being flattering if you suit warmer colours. I wear lots of blues in spring and summer, but if you can't wear an icy blue a brighter, warmer blue might work better. It's like beige or tan, supposed to be universally flattering but I look awful in either.

I have two rainproof coats, but I think it's hard to pull off chic if it's torrential.

XingMing · 15/06/2019 17:24

I have a very old trapeze-shaped Cocoon raincoat in cornflower blue that I bought in (roughly) 1997. It cost a bomb even in the sale but is still going strong, still waterproof and still in production. Having borrowed it every time she visited me, my mum bought a red one and added the warm winter lining.

Redandblue11 · 17/06/2019 08:14

Hopefully we will not need raincoats this week!
I am wearing the pinkish max Mara linen jacket I got the other day but just over a navy outfit, very safe boring even but I am on those days were I wanted minimal effort.

Curious to hear Bani’s daughters feedback on pale blue.

Recommendations please, I normally wear just a bit of nude eye shadow to even out tone, when going out I do a pale white-ish type . Dark does not suit near my eyes. Basically are the only two tones I would wear. But my eyes are sensitive... any brands you recommend? With single colour? Or any hack? Should I stop wearing that altogether?

banivani · 17/06/2019 09:25

I have one daughter who looks great in almost all blues, because her eyes are blue so it makes them pop very nicely. The other one is just young and gorgeous and can wear what she likes, but she's never been drawn to the preppiness of pale blue I think. I'll borrow something from D1 and check. It's important to not just assume things will be bad, right? (But generally pale colours aren't great for me.)

The day I nail the chic-in-the-rain look will be the day piglets flutter at eye level. My rain look involves a baseball hat to keep the water out of my eyes. Such fashion, much fancy.

I listened to an Swedish radio programme yesterday from Jan 2018, an hour's chat on fashion with Sara Danius who used to lead the Swedish Academy (and got ousted for trying to open up investigations etc after the rape scandals). It was a good chat, so it's a great shame you lot can't listen. ;) She's always used clothes to send a message, and her Nobel Award dresses were works of art. They're designed by Pär Engsheden (who also did Princess Victoria's wedding dress), and he is very influenced by Balenciaga and uses silk gazar like him in Danius's dresses, for the sculptural look without weight.

Link to article from february 2018 about the dresses with pics incase pics don't show He says the green one is inspired by Proust, the black with red flowers by Balzac and the white and black by Virginia Woolf (the programme went into more detail)

Link to radio programme if you're feeling multilingual

The last one she wore was pink and orange, mad as hell and amazing.

Oooooh Bani... spectacular!

Redandblue11 · 17/06/2019 16:43

All spectacular, but the green one speaks to me louder than the rest. Love it.

Floisme · 17/06/2019 16:51

Xing I wish more raincoats came with the option of a detachable, heavyweight lining. I think it would resolve all but those extreme days when you don't care what you look like as long as you get home alive. And now I promise not to mention bad weather coats again till September.

Blue is weird - I have blue eyes so you'd think it would me good on me but I think (and for once, MrFlo agrees with me) the only shade that really suits me is deep indigo, which is I suppose, the closest to my eye colour. Navy's sometimes ok. Pales and turquoises no. Greens nearly always look better but I wouldn't say I had any yellow undertones to my skin and my veins are def blue. Which is why I don't understand any of this stuff and just look in the mirror.

bani those dresses are fabulous, especially the orange with the pink. Do you know who that's inspired by cos I'm off to read them? I also love that green (even though I couldn't get on with Proust).

Red I've pretty much given up on all eye make up except for a very meh neutral eye shadow. It was originally due to sensitivites - I couldn't find any mascaras or eye liners that didn't make my eyes stream. Now I've got used to it I prefer a more bare look but I wear specs so my eyes already get some definition that way. But eye shadow - funnily enough I can wear any brand without a problem. So basically I'm no help but I feel your pain. I used to wear black mascara and eye liner but I suspect it didn't do me any favours.
