user1457017537 both Kate and Meghan spend a lot on their clothes, jewellery, bags and shoes - why single out Meghan?

Kate wears bespoke or adjusted pieces by Alexander McQueen, Catherine Walker, Emilia Wickstead and more. The prices aren't listed like they are for Meghan (private) but they cost many thousands. She also has plenty of pieces by other designers such as Erdem and Dolce and Gabbana. Kate has been in the Royal family since the end of 2010, she spent a lot at the start and still does. Meghan's has had a few rewears (especially coats, jackets, shoes and jewellery) and even wears items from before she was engaged and Meghan had a good net worth before marriage. She and Kate both receive funding from Charles' private income. Meghan has also worn items by M&S and H&M. Hopefully, she'll wear some more high street items in the future like Kate did (such as Hobbs and similar).

Meghan also became pregnant quite quickly so obviously all her previous clothes will not fit (and is constantly getting bigger of course, again tricky). She will start building a collection over the next few years to allow her to rewear items. I'd definitely love to see both in more affordable pieces and it's something they both need to do more of... Though they shouldn't give up designer pieces altogether!

SenecaFalls · 11/03/2019 21:32

Someone upthread mentioned precedence. Technically Andrew should come before William and Harry (as child of sovereign before grandchild) but I see he followed them. He is also listed in the Court Circular after them.

rosewater20 · 11/03/2019 21:35

@Thedarklady there has been a lot of criticism of both DOS and DOC spending habits. Perhaps user1457017537 singled DOS out today because the DOC was rewearing an outfit, and the DOS was wearing two new outfits that total £19,000 (according to user1457017537, I haven't checked the prices).

SenecaFalls · 11/03/2019 21:37

rosewater I probably should have said "criticized in some quarters." I much preferred the green too.

Harebellsies · 11/03/2019 21:39

Thanks

AnneEyhtMeyer · 11/03/2019 21:46

@thedarklady Meghan has spent obscenely huge amounts on outfits very early on (engagement photos for example) and these are still fresh in people's minds, so every expensive item is added to the mental spending tally we have in our heads.

Also in my opinion someone so far down the pecking order shouldn't be spending as much as those closer to the top.

Notmyrealname855 · 11/03/2019 21:48

I think part of the problem is when it was just kate, well it was a bit like dress up with a doll. With two women (roughly the same age) you do just boomerang back and forth at their looks suddenly thinking “Christ this is a lot of money”, Kate was just good at using more high st earlier on

EstrellaDamn · 11/03/2019 21:53

TM couldn't have looked less put together if she got dressed wearing a blindfold.

Those flesh coloured ill-fitting gloves? What on earth?

That's the last I'd like to see of her on this thread tbh. What she's done to this country is making my blood boil and these threads are mostly a refuge from the real world.

QueenOfTheAndals · 11/03/2019 21:56

As I've said before, they ALL spend obscene amounts on clothes - Kate wore about £50k worth of outfits in less than a week last month - bespoke Gucci and D&G don't come cheap.

And Meghan and Harry aren't that far down the pecking order just yet. They'll be more sidelined once William comes to the throne but when Charles is king he'll still have a more prominent role as a) William's children will still be too young to take on any duties and b) he'll be the king's son!

I rarely get bothered by how much is spent by the Duchesses on clothes. I enjoy seeing the sort of clothes I can never aspire to buy or diet to fit in to. The fact that it's all out of my league makes it more interesting, I never venture beyond M&S type shops.

AnneEyhtMeyer · 11/03/2019 22:08

Queen What I'm saying though is that MM's spending is all very recent and therefore at the front of people's minds. Also she has only been in there public eye in austere times. It is the juxtaposition in outlay between her and a normal person that is so jarring.

I do think they are far down the pecking order. 6th in line is so far away from the equivalent when Fergie came on the scene. In a very short time the Cambridge children will be teens and all the interest will be on them.

Thedarklady · 11/03/2019 22:16

I wonder how popular the British Royal Family will be after the death of The Queen? Will we see Charles, William and George become kings?

SenecaFalls · 11/03/2019 22:20

They are far down the line in succession, but once Charles becomes king, Harry will be third male in precedence and Meghan will be third female. That's pretty high up there.

alldressedupinblue · 11/03/2019 22:26

Mention of Queenie and Camila wearing the same colour reminded me of PM Margaret Thatcher asking her office to co-ordinate with Buckingham Palace so that they didn't match.

Reply came back:

"Please don't worry. Her Majesty doesn't notice what people are wearing"

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 11/03/2019 22:28

Just out of interest regarding precedence.
If Prince Phillip outlived the Queen (all hypothetical); where would he be in precedence?
After Charles; before William?

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 11/03/2019 22:38

Isn’t Kate going to a school in Lambeth tomorrow ?
What’s the betting we get a High Street; shirtwaister dress again?

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 11/03/2019 22:40

certainlymerry I totally agree re Kate’s style recently, I have been looking at pictures of her and could not put my finger on why she does not look so good these days, and you are right she looks severe, she can just about get away with the severe look now because she is young, not such a good look in 10 years time though, she really needs to loose the military uniform meets air hostess looks she favours and ditch the MOB coat dresses whilst she is at it.

BlingLoving · 11/03/2019 22:59

In terms of precedence it's entirely related to proximity to the throne. So ever since William came along, Andrew.has been pushed.back. at all events you will always see queen, Charles and camila, William and Kate, Harry and Meghan, Andrew, his girls, Edward, his kids, Anne, her kids.

I think i read somewhere that partners get their precedence from their partner so if William was not there, am not sure if kate would still follow Charles or be pushed to the back.

Interesting question 're philip. I have no idea how that would work if he outlived the queen.

Am I the only one who thought the green dress neckline was weird and unflattering? Otherwise, it was great. White outfit good to but my god, that hat?!?!

Going against the grain, i loved Kate's coat dress. Thought she looked fantastic.

FlyMayBe · 11/03/2019 23:05

I loved both DoS' outfits today. I thought the cream hat looked like something Jackie O would wear. Didn't like the buttons on DoC's coat-dress, and thought her hat looked like a flying saucer. Agree that she looks very tired - hope she gets some sleep soon.

DoS looked luminous. She's so beautiful.

AnneEyhtMeyer · 11/03/2019 23:09

I think only the family members care about precedence rather than succession. No one genuinely thinks of Andrew as relevant despite his high place in the order of precedence. He's just a former spare.

shuttersaregreen · 11/03/2019 23:16

When Kate married William, she wore a lot of high st and more relatable clothes . Of course she also wore designer stuff too, but not all the time in public. The problem with Meghan is that everything she wears is mega expensive. Apart from the H and M dress and an M and S piece. As a new Royal, it grates. Especially when she plays up the ‘I’m one of the People’ credential, and the designers she wears are rarely British. It’s not well judged.

BlingLoving · 11/03/2019 23:22

But Anne he's not high in order of precedence? I mean, sure, in bigger scheme he is. But the chance of.him.being king is so tiny as to be irrelevant and we all know that the rf is being slimmed down. I don't thjnknanyine cares beyond Charles and his sons. And as George and his siblings grow, Harry and Meghan will experience the same thing and become increasingly irrelevant. (I believe that they will slowly move away from mainstream rf events over next 20 years.)

,,"In terms of precedence it's entirely related to proximity to the throne.*

No, it is proximity to the monarch. Children generally have higher precedence than grandchildren. But the monarch can change it.

BartonHollow · 12/03/2019 02:29

If Philip outlives The Queen, massively unlikely sure, but still possible

Charles as The Monarch would outrank him and he'd be something like

HRH, The Duke Of Edinburgh, The Kings Father

He is very much seen as the Head Of The Family privately, that much is known

There's no real precedent for it - or if there is I can't think of one

They all either outlived the consort, didn't have one or had no issue
