Welcome mother - you may wish to hide your credit card Grin. You will definitely get led even further down the rabbit hole here!

I would also love to know what your discontinued fragrance was.

MotherOfDragonite · 10/03/2019 17:58

I don't think it's been discontinued as far as I know, but it's now unavailable except from one online shop in the US. It's a fragrance oil called Monyette Paris. I wore it for over 15 years and it smelled amazing on me! But when my sister put it on, it smelled kind of like suntan lotion.

I want to understand more about what smells amazing on me, though, as I found it really hard to choose replacements and ended up with a couple of duds.

In my search for another perfume oil I've recently tried Le Labo's Labdanum 18, which I thought might be a good replacement, but I find it a bit too sweet and heavy for everyday use. I do like it but it's just not a replacement.

Now trying Hidden by Miller Harris and really liking it. I have a sample of Coeur de Jardin which I enjoyed, and Rose Silence which was nicer on other people than on me. Scherzo was gorgeous but quite heavy and distinctive.

MotherOfDragonite · 10/03/2019 17:59

Basically I don't know enough about this stuff! I don't know what the smells are or why they might smell nice or not on me! I seem to love such random stuff and I am really enjoying finding out more about why.

Thank you for the friendly welcome :-)

Hi Mother!

This is lovely if you like Tuberose.. not cloying but very addictive.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a Rhubarb fragrance? I need a new Spring fragrance and spritzed Nina Ricci Bella - it's opening and middle are lovely but the dry down was a bit meh. So looking for a rhubarb with a musk base?
My favourites are NR for Her - A/W and DG Light Blue - Summer. It seems too early for LB yet.

Calmasasleepycat · 10/03/2019 20:06

Sorry to have been an enabler, everyone! (Not sorry! 😀). MrsMoggs, would love to go to Zurich, but feel a trip to London (Les Senteurs) might be more practical ...

Have been wearing Carillon pour un Ange today. Was there ever a nicer name - Chime for an Angel? It’s so beautiful, opening with squished green stems, lily of the valley, and strong lilac notes. There are some indolic notes, perhaps from jasmine. The effect is like a whole bush of lilac in bloom all at once, where you wonder if it’s overwhelming and then realise you can’t stop smelling it. As with all Tauer there is a richness underlying everything. It lasted most of the day.

Mother, welcome! Monyette is listed on Fragrantica here. The strongest notes seems to be gardenia, vanilla and Lily Of The Valley. If you look on the left hand side of the page, it suggests other perfumes you might like, and you can also search by notes. I have some suggestions, though. I think you need to do lots of testing! Try Diorissimo (beautiful Lily Of The Valley), Pacifica Gardenia (very pretty, a reasonable price and available in Holland & Barrett); Elizabeth Taylor Gardenia, Chanel Gardenia (this is expensive!).

MotherOfDragonite · 11/03/2019 07:18

Thank you so much for the suggestions!

Kalifornia, I don't know if I like tuberose (I mean, I actually don't know what it smells like!) but Do Son sounds really promising from all the descriptions. And it seems to have a perfume oil version...

Calm, I've tried Pacifica Gardenia but it was a bit nothingy on me. I know it says that Monyette has notes of gardenia but the weird thing is that when I try gardenia perfumes elsewhere they don't have the same effect on me at all! So I'm not sure what the magic ingredient is. I will try to test some of the others when I can!

teta · 11/03/2019 09:05

JMangel Rhubarb with musk fragrances include James Heeleys Verveine ( rhubarb, lemon verbena, musk) plus Hermes Rhubarb Escarlatte. I also have a soft spot for Aedes de venustas as it’s a stunning Rhubarb but it doesn’t have any musk notes.

I’ve been wearing Vintage Paris all weekend for a 50th which has been much admired. Tam Dao for a chilly snowy day today.

Calmasasleepycat · 11/03/2019 09:15

Mother it sounds as though you are looking for a white floral perfume with oomph! You will have a wonderful time testing as there are lots to try. If you google “best white floral perfumes” there is a link to a Fragrantica thread where people have made suggestions. Some will be easier to test than others, eg easily available at department stores. Of the ones suggested, these are the ones I thought would be good to try if you can:

Estée Lauder Pleasures, also Private Collection Tuberose Gardenia, and Beyond Paradise (tropical white flowers)
Hermes 24 Faubourg (also Jour d’Hermes)
Serge Lutens Fleurs d’Oranger
Guerlain, eg Jardins de Bagatelle, but there are several that might suit
Annick Goutal (several)
Marc Jacobs by Marc Jacobs (don’t know this one but seems as though it might be good)
L’Artisan Parfumeur La Chasse aux Papillons
Chanel Beige (more beautiful than it sounds, but is from the Exclusif range so pricey)

Would second Kalifornia’s Do Son - it’s beautiful.

The other suggestion is to order some samples, try 4160Tuesdays (Sleep Knot, Pillow Talk, Rome 1963), Bloom Perfumery, The Perfume Society, Les Senteurs.

Estée Lauder Private Collection Tuberose Gardenia is a beautiful perfume.

Calmasasleepycat · 11/03/2019 09:54

Hello JMangel, the Hermes one, as teta says, is a beautiful one for spring. I looked up a couple of others for you to investigate, Kenzo Flower Tag and Nina Ricci Ricci, but they both seem a bit heavy for spring. 4160Tuesdays do a couple of beautiful rhubarb perfumes, Rhubarb & Custard and Rhubarb & Citrus. They would be suitable for spring, but I don’t think they have musk.

67chevvyimpala · 11/03/2019 10:02

White floral with oomph?

Dior addict
Elizabeth Taylor white diamonds

teta · 11/03/2019 10:09

Also Mother some comments in Fragantica have suggested this perfume smells creamy and coconutty. In which case try sniffing the Nuxe Perfume at M&S, Monoi de Vahines by Yves Rocher and Terracotta by Guerlain.

JMAngel1 · 11/03/2019 10:20

Thanks calm and teta - will def check out the Hermes - I do love eau de marveill so have high hopes.

KaliforniaDreamz · 11/03/2019 15:14

SOTD Baby Grace layered with that baby powder perfume oil i bought on a whim from amazon and Timeless.
I smell like a very fragrant, mature baby

67chevvyimpala · 11/03/2019 15:21

Suggestions for perfume for when you feel really ill?

I've never had laryngitis before. Its horrid.

KaliforniaDreamz · 11/03/2019 15:55

Oh you poor thing. xx

teta · 11/03/2019 17:32

chevvy something that comforts you. For me it’s powdery scents like Mona di orio Musc or Drole d Rose. Or if you are feeling nauseous Lilac works really well for some reason. Or maybe Honey and ginger?
Poor you.
You’ve spent all last week nursing your son and now you’ve got it 🍋💐.

67chevvyimpala · 11/03/2019 17:44
