Previous thread

And I shouldn't have to say this anymore but will do so for any newbies - let's keep our critiquing to the clothes and not the women wearing them.

Her wealth came from her career as a TV actress. She actually is a celebrity.
She doesn't have to pretend poverty now that she is a member of the RF.

Why is what she does considered 'flaunting'?

Why do you consider the lifestyle of wealthy Americans to consist of 'flaunting'?

certainlymerry · 22/02/2019 06:37

Also as to whether MM flies her mother in it not, it’s entirely her business. Her Mum comes across as quite a self reliant quiet and possibility shy person. A big celebrity bash full of glitz and glamour may not be her thing. It’s Meghans thing, not hers.

certainlymerry · 22/02/2019 06:42

Do you really think her earnings in a TV show are paying for all her clothes, travel and holidays? It’s not an endless pot.
I just personally find it all a bit tastless and it’s not what the RF have so far done. Especially in the current political climate. Once the RF start behaving like celebrities it will all start to unravel. That’s my personal view and will not be shared by everyone.

VanillaSugarr · 22/02/2019 06:45

Anyway...... back to Tiaras. I had a dream last night that I met a member of the aristocracy (who I actually have met in RL) so I asked her about her tiara. Apparently it is kept in The Netherlands for security but she had a copy in her pocket (as you do) so she whipped it out and put it on for me. It had a strange fastening - at first it looked like a fringed string but when she wrapped it round her updo, the fringe bits stuck out in the form of an Art Deco creation. It was amazing. And entirely fictional. Because it was a dream. About tiaras.

QueenOfTheAndals · 22/02/2019 07:08

On the grand scale of things I think I find Kate's wearing of two dubious designers last week far more tasteless than Meghan's baby shower. It may have been $75k a night in the hotel but bespoke D&G and Gucci would've easily cost that too. Yet there was nowhere near as much outrage about that tone deaf gesture.

If Meghan's friends wanted to throw her a shower and pay for it themselves (and I'm not sure where the idea that Harper's foot the bill came from) then I can't get too frothy. Serena Williams has worked hard for her money (harder than any member of the royal family ever has) and she can spend it any way she wants!

Why are we talking like the daily mail? Every woman featured is deemed to be "flaunting" something even if they were papped with a long lens going about their every day business.

In this situation I haven't see any flaunting - a private trip was leaked and then the resulting press situation was managed (how well this was done is a separate debate). Yes one may feel a bit queasy about the amount of money allegedly spent on the shower but it's up to the attendees how they spend their money - if Amal offers MM a lift home in her jet, of course she's going to say yes! Anyone would, even if they weren't so heavily pregnant.

I think it's awful how she's being treated by the press

Notmyrealname855 · 22/02/2019 07:32

How are we going round in circles on this Confused some people like the baby shower and some people don’t, it’s all subjective!

Wish I’d had a dream about tiaras, dreamt about cleaning instead (which is sad as have to do some cleaning this weekend)

user1457017537 · 22/02/2019 07:33

If I may just add I think for me it is the fauxmanitarian that grates with me. I don’t like self-styled humanitarians and people who declare they are going to hit the ground running to improve things. It’s not that simple or achievable or it would be done.
As I have said before she is very stylish and you just don’t get the same look from the High Street or the same fabrics. I don’t care about the price of MM’s clothes. The Royal family are the richest in the world.

banivani · 22/02/2019 07:50

Well at least the Swedish royals are down to earth.* Enjoy this short film of Prince Daniel and Princess Estelle doing a little obstacle course made out of sticks (free sticks, from nature) wearing casual clothes (keeping it about style I am). Part of one of PD:s pet projects, to get kids moving. Action starts at about 0.26.

QueenOfTheAndals · 22/02/2019 07:52

Estelle is a treasure, she seems such a great kid.

OP posts:
QueenOfTheAndals · 22/02/2019 07:54

The Scandinavian royals definitely seem more down to earth. Mar & Fre's kids just attend a local state school rather than the Danish equivalent of Eton.

OP posts:
QueenOfTheAndals · 22/02/2019 07:57

Here is Estelle again visiting the Royal Collection. You'd think a kid her age might find it a bit boring but she's thoroughly engaged and looks interested in all the objects she's being shown. And even Oscar, who usually looks a bit grumpy, manages a smile!

OP posts:
banivani · 22/02/2019 08:28

I don't know what they've done to that child, she's so even-tempered and patient.

In Sweden (and I'd say the other Scandinavian countries) there's been a tacit agreement with the press to not harass the royal family, so criticism tends to peter out. This is why king CG:s infidelities were widely known among those in the know but never published. And once published everyone was quite keen to move on. Our disconnect between the obvious dissonance of a ROYAL FAMILY fgs in a country that otherwise is not set up at all (officially) for the trappings and privilege of hereditary class makes for a lot of amusing mind-twisting justification. I think there is a similar thing going on in the UK but you've retained far more of your class system there. I am sure that they can feel overwhelmed and harrassed but I am equally sure that it's nothing compared to what the UK RF have to see. You can, genuinely, bump into the Swedish RF out for a walk in some places, and not a press photographer in sight.

Anyway, they know full well that it's a fine line to tread. They need to seem ordinary, yet still glam up when needed. It's so bizarre!

BlingLoving · 22/02/2019 09:09

The problem with the britiah royal family vs scandabian is That we make it so that our royal family can't live normal lives. In this country they are mostly not discreetly ignored when they go about their business. I've always got the sense that scandi royals are mostly treated like normal people out and about. And of course, when they leave the are and travel the world they are not nearly as famous and probably wouldn't even be recognised by most people.

All the whining about expensive schools and hotels etc for BRF but no awareness of how anything less is impractical. Meghan had a woman screaming at her on the street for Pete's sake- how would that have turned out without her protection detail?!

And agree with queen, Kate's not very well chosen designer dresses, which probably were actually paid for by us as it was an official function, should be more of a concern than Meghan hanging out with her celebrity buddies on a private trip.

AFifthOfKoolAid · 22/02/2019 09:31

mathanxiety 👏👏 100%

certainlymerry · 22/02/2019 09:43

Just to be a bit clearer I wasn’t talking about Meghan when I used the ill advised DM word ‘flaunting’ which I admit wasn’t well chosen. I was responding to a previous comment about the differences between how ostentatious displays of wealth are seen in the US as compared to UK.
Of course it’s up to how her celebrity friends how they spend their money, but her image now needs to be different to how it was before she married into an Uber rich family whose job it is to be seen to be performing a public duty.
I didn’t see the awful dress Kate wore, I thought she had been wearing amazing dresses lately?
She is the wife of the future King of England after all so needs to dress accordingly. She doesn’t give the impression that she spends vast amounts without a thought and actually doesn’t seem that interested in clothes and the trappings of wealth for their own sake.
I agree the Mail and media generally is behaving like a lynch mob however.

QueenOfTheAndals · 22/02/2019 10:05

@certainlymerry Kate's dressed last week in bespoke Dolce e Gabbana and bespoke Gucci. Both are incredibly expensive labels that have attracted controversy lately due to running campaigns with fairly racist undertones. Rather tone deaf of her (or her stylist) to choose them, and had Meghan done the same she would've been pilloried by the tabloids.

OP posts:
certainlymerry · 22/02/2019 10:31

Ah! Thanks for the explanation Queen, I hadn't realised that was the issue.

thecutecouple · 22/02/2019 10:58

They are part of the RF. They are not meant to be living in the same standard of living as the general public. There is a reason people like the middletons spend so much time latching onto Kate's link to the RF. Do people really expect a pregnant royal to fly economy and hide away in a 2* motel? Even before MM dated Harry, she was rich and famous. She needs security to protect her and her unborn baby whenever she goes. As long as there is a RF representing a country, it will cost public money. I'm surprised the RF are allowing the media to constantly bully and hound MM especially as she is pregnant. She has a right to her privacy.

QueenOfTheAndals · 22/02/2019 10:59

Speaking of adorable royal kids, the Monegasque twins are in South Africa. I'd forgotten that's where Charlene is from!

OP posts:
SlipperOrchid · 22/02/2019 11:06

The private jet Meghan flew back to the UK in, is owned by George Clooney. The UK taxpayers aren’t paying for it at all.

QueenOfTheAndals · 22/02/2019 11:11

Oh she'll be accused to having too many sleb mates or something like that. But that's nothing new for royals. Who knew Robbie Williams and Eugenie were so close that his daughter would be one of her bridesmaids??

OP posts:
LuciaSpain · 22/02/2019 12:19

I think MM is doing what all royals do but she's decided to leave out the PR dressing it up so we perceive them to be frugal.

A self proclaimed humanitarian spending that much money on a trip is going to bring huge criticism on herself. I never believed the humanitarian bit and she's proving this, it looks like she can't help herself and is literally stuffing her face with money. It's not the case she was a hollywood star with wealth to back her up to begin with so this money is royal family money.

I think it's extremely bad taste to be rubbing British people's noses in it when there's so much uncertainty around, just look at the North East and Honda leaving, extremely badly timed.

HM is the only thing keeping the goodwill of the people together, when she goes that golden era will be gone too, there's no replacement.

And I love looking at their gowns and clothes which I know is the purpose of this thread but the charade this week is crass in the extreme. That baby shower was done to show us she has friends, it could have been done on the low down and I don't believe the press weren't tipped off. Look at the debacle with her father and the friends speaking out, she knew all about that.

MM could keep a low profile which she should now for the health of her baby and herself, the media backlast will not get better. Her mate George told everyone to stop hounding her and what did she do go to the centre of Manhattan and court the media, why not go to the countryside somewhere if she wants to lay low.

This won't end well in the medium term.

user1457017537 · 22/02/2019 12:39

LuciaSpain I agree

PineapplePower · 22/02/2019 12:41

Even before MM dated Harry, she was rich and famous

She was rich, but not famous. No one had really heard of her before Harry.

She has a right to her privacy

Yes, she does. So can her team stop working with magazines/luxury brands to cover her baby shower? She could have done this very quietly.

That said, I don’t think this cost the British taxpayer very much beyond the RPO as the brands she worked with would have comped everything. The exposure would be worth so much more.

But hey! She looked amazing in the later stages of pregnancy. Those jackets 😍
