I think it’s a cultural thing. For Brits, this is all grossly distasteful. Flashy and look-at-me.
For Americans, it’s completely normal. HB will have paid for the hotel, a bespoke deal will have been done. All the flowers and whatnot delivered yesterday will have been paid for by them. Expect to see them featured in the photo shoot, which will have taken place in this suite.
Friends will have turned up to the party today, enjoyed the jolly on someone else’s tab. They will have paid for some stuff themselves, but very modest amounts relative to what HB is paying. Perhaps food, a cake, some avocados and turmeric tea saucer of milk!
It’s very tawdry, as it’s all about money. Imagine your baby shower being sponsored by a brand. Exposing your pregnancy (your first one, at that) to a magazine in return for favourable PR. It’ll all be very Oprah (minus the humility), and fall flat on its face in the UK. The Americans will lap it up, the girl next door married to an English prince.
If Doria doesn’t show, she’ll be a far wiser woman than any of the rest of them.
