Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14 Thread 15 Thread 16 Thread 17

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Vaz - I had cystic acne for years, hormone related and typically on my chin. One hot, red, swollen, painful under-the-skin lump after another for years on end, each one leaving a red scar. Led therapy is proven to help. It takes the inflammation down and helps to heal. My scars have faded a tiny bit over time but I got rid of a lot of it with the Obagi nuderm system. It's expensive, brutal and you have peeling red skin for weeks on end but it's fantastic stuff. It's not for everyone though, as it's hydroquinone and tretinoin mainly. Dermarolling helps too and a consistent retinol and acid regime.

Well, my nuface has gone back now. It just wasn't giving me any results at all and I couldn't be bothered to persevere quite frankly.

After my skin calmed down following me burning it off nearly whilst messing about with vit c...... I've gone and damaged it again. 😳 Had a brutal dermabrasion treatment and it's left me with ravaged skin. Like severe sunburn for 3 days and now an outbreak of an itchy, pimply rash. No discernible benefit and it cost a shed load of money too. I also can't do anything at home with it now cos it's too sore, so I'm just using cerave and Vichy serum on it til it calms down 😡 ⬅️colour of my face!

Second instalment of Sali Hughes list- 30 best body and skincare under £15- in Guardian today.

A few things in there I own or have used.

botemp · 23/03/2019 12:27

Vaz what kind of BC are you on? It may be worth discussing with your GP to switch to something like Yasmin as that helps with hormonal acne. If you have a Mirena coil it's also worth discussing as that is known to be hormonally disruptive in the long term, leading to hair loss and acne.

BHA does indeed go deeper as its oil soluble but AHAs are able to effectively remove the top layer so you get a more managed outbreak rather than a festering under the skin one. If BP isn't working well for you, you could consider a SAP serum (a Vit C derivative) it's a lot gentler but has similar anti-bacterial working as BP.

Tant, was it you who had a little Foreo in an advent calendar? I've started on tret and whilst I don't have much peeling I am finding a wet flannel in the AM a bit rough on it, thinking a Foreo might be a decent alternative that should be a bit gentler. Just curious if it's any good really and offers (very) mild physical exfoliation or not?

I saw that article this morning JDSTER, I have to say I was rather Shock that the newest TO cleanser is 5.50 for 50ml of cleanser! I doubt that would last a fortnight.

JDSTER · 23/03/2019 16:28

How often are you using Tret Bo? Did I remember correctly you were starting with once a week? Are you buffering at all or putting on dry, bare skin?

Ruggypeg where was your NuFace fro originally?

RuggyPeg · 23/03/2019 18:55

Current body.

EnidButton · 23/03/2019 19:37

Hope you've all had a good Saturday. After using LRP lipikar body lotion for about a month, it's my most favourite body moisturiser ever and the amount I've tried must be triple figures by now. Never not liked one but never had one that did everything so well.

Eucerin urea is excellent for areas prone to KP, wouldn't be without it, but it stinks and takes ages to sink in so it's not an all over one for me. Aveeno is my must have to stop my calves going dotty after shaving as it doesn't sting, but again, it stinks and I wouldn't want it all over.

LRP one sinks in pretty fast but is still rich enough to do something. Makes my skin really soft and smooth and seems to keep it that way between applications. Not the cheapest but it's gone on my permanent buys list.

This one ^. It is lightly scented btw if anyone's sensitive to that.

botemp · 23/03/2019 19:40

I actually started twice a week JDSTER, since I had so much time in the run up to a point where there wasn't travel interrupting a consistent Tret regime, I patch tested it on my chin for a bit and found twice a week to be very tolerable. Yes, buffered more or less, applied 30 mins after moisturising undiluted. I'm mostly struggling with makeup and how it accentuates the peeling but it's only visible when you're very up close. I only use concealer, I'm not sure whether to seek out a new concealer or maybe try an eye cream?

So far I'm not having any extra irritation or redness which I was anticipating, and the peeling doesn't feel like dryness oddly enough, I'd expected my skin to be tight and dull but it's not been. I'm rather glowy and even toned but was like that pre-Tret, I had expected my barrier to suffer more but it's stayed pretty strong. I did add in Toleriane riche moisturiser and wear the normal Toleriane sensitive (which is almost identical to the US double repair one) under sunscreen.

I'm also using a higher concentration on the body for some stretch marks but think I need to up the frequency on that as I've had zero irritation and peeling but it's a bit annoying maintaining two different schedules alongside each other.

Well my face is calming down now following its sandblasting. I think my new Vichy 89 serum has helped enormously. I typically like hard core acids, retinols, peels etc whereas this serum is just a bit of hylaronic (sp?) but I have to say, it's gorgeous. Goes on beautifully, not sticky and makes my skin feel like glass. I love it! Off to have laser on my thread veins next week and a consultation for upper eye lid surgery

vaz119 · 24/03/2019 11:45

Ruddy I'm off to Google cause I'll try anything!

Bo I'm on brevinor which is a 21 day pill

BUT I might have sussed it Star

Me and hubby have been taking about it... I've always had the odd hormonal spot (maybe 6 a year really bad ones)... But right now I've got 4 horrendous ones which is unusual for me so we ate trying to work out what's changed??

I've only bloody been taking Biotin since January to try and repair nails I wrecked with biting off a gel manicure at Xmas Blush. The minute you Google acne & biotin Dr google is awash with links to cystic acne! (idiot)!

botemp · 24/03/2019 12:02

It's definitely the biotin. I repeat it on here often enough it's a major acne trigger. And it's not that great of a supplement anyhow...

I might need to include it in the acne sheet, it's far too common not to mention, really.

OP posts:
EnidButton · 24/03/2019 13:11

Biotin gives me acne. Guaranteed, every single time. All B vitamins do for me. Brilliant that you've worked out what's aggravated it Vaz!

EnidButton · 24/03/2019 13:12

OPI nail envy is excellent for repairing nails btw. Original one.

YesQueen · 24/03/2019 14:44

Just been to TK and stocked up on the dr jart gel cream Smile

Tsmummy08 · 24/03/2019 15:19

Queen Nice! You must have the best TK in the country, both our local ones are pants!!

YesQueen · 24/03/2019 15:34

I spent £95 Blush
Ceramidin gel cream and liquid
Loads of yes to hair care
Shea moisture hair care
Nip fab glycolic liquid
Mio yoga spray
Rose and hyaluronic acid spray (I use as a toner to wipe over face)
6 x savile row diffusers (they smell like clean laundry and are £5!)
A leave in hair conditioner I haven't tried before empire Australia aromapure
Some star earrings

TantricTwist · 24/03/2019 16:58

BO no it wasnt me that had the the Foreo but someone on here definitely did as I recall. I think it was the poster who came on to say she really liked her Nuface but I'm not sure?

My DD bought a cheap cleansing brush from Primark which is like a clarisonic soft brush on one side which she loves using and the back part on the otherside has a short stubby silicone brush like the Foreo (which we have tried in Space NK) and both are unpleasant to use.

I'm a bit embarrassed now Blush because I vaguely remember reading that biotin cause cause skin issues but obviously it had taken me weeks to connect the two! (idiot!)

Enid i'll have a look for that OPI stuff

Fingers and toes crossed that's exactly what it is and my hideous face goes back to normal very soon!

The plan was to get a Drs appt for tomorrow but I think I'll hold off another week now that I've stopped the biotin.

Any other suggestions for fading the inevitable red marks these beauties are going to leave behind? (Ive been using cicaplast b5 but no real improvement)

And when they go I can still feel the hard lump under the skin for ages (like they are waiting to come back)... Is glycolic/lactic/salicylic or something else better for getting rid of these?

Thanks x

botemp · 25/03/2019 10:57

Your Tkmaxx is really an Alladin's cave Queen. Mine is never that great in the beauty department although I did recently get a Tom Ford lipstick in a bright pink hidden on the back shelves of their sale for €12. It was completely boxed in with an alarm so amazingly pristine.

Thanks Tant, I'll have a look in Primark and see if they have anything similar just to try out before investing in a Foreo. Been meaning to get some of their microfibre face cloths as an alternative anyhow.

Vaz, glycolic is probably the most efficient in booting out subcutaneous spots. In the long term management Retinol is the obvious choice. For post inflammatory pigmentation Vitamin C is the go to, although glycolic helps a bit too and obviously sunscreen is essential, specifically one with high UVA protection.

Here's my haul

EnidButton · 26/03/2019 01:14

Good haul! And I've been eyeing up star earrings exactly like those for ages! Wonder what that chances are, of my local tk maxx having them in too.

Sometimes it's a neatly laid out treasure trove but mostly it's fruitless chaos and I usually don't bother then. Going to have a look next weekend just in case.

princessTiasmum · 28/03/2019 00:02

Anyone else thinking of getting a nu face, just watched a video on youtube on how to spot a fake, mostly on ebay

CJDoesTheJackal · 28/03/2019 00:44

I've been using Dr Dennis Gross pads once a week. I ❤️ them.

RuggyPeg · 28/03/2019 12:39

Well I've just had my facial thread veins zapped and I have to say, overall, I think it's been a success. The ones round my nose especially are much improved. It didn't really hurt. A couple were a bit ouch but for a split second only. I think with a 2nd session, it'd be 95% clear. I want that even, flawless, glass-like skin! I'm now after a big x20 magnifying mirror. Remarkably, there are none on line, so I'm going to tkmaxx to have a butchers. Oh and I'm going to try the Timeless vit c Skinceuticals rip-off too! I can't bear to pay £135 for the real thing, so I'm going to give this a go instead. Anyone tried it?
