Bellsandwhistle · 26/12/2018 21:02

So after Liberty and M and S advent calanders plus a few presents I’m gonna attempt a no beauty spend 2019. Will eventually need deodorant and shampoo I guess but will see how far I can get before spending....

Welcome to the latecomers - though February isn't that late!

If you're here it means you're looking at your drawers and shelves and feeling a bit sick. The aim is to use up what we like, bin or give away what we don't, and squash our latent hoarding/impulse buying/offer grabbing tendencies.

I did bin those 2 lotions today. Felt great until I looked in my fake tan box and found 2 more bloody body washes from my Christmas gift set! FULL SIZE!

I don't know whether to use them or bin them. I know from the last tube that they're hard to squeeze but it's essentially washed down the drain so do I care really that I don't like the product much? Whereas lotion stays on you. Is it being too picky to throw away such an unimportant thing out of snootiness?

It'll take me at least 2 months to use both up though. Ugh.

Sarcelle · 26/02/2019 21:00

I wonder if this is the answer for getting rid of some of the unused items we have....

Sorry, can't seem to get a link but this is a screenshot of the start of the article in The Guardian.

Shampoo. 287

Elspeth - I have a friend whi is alergic to scented toiletries. She donates them or uses them as cleaning products (her home smells lovely!).

moimichme · 27/02/2019 11:42

I would like to get to a no spend on presents at all - a night out or a great meal beforehand - but sadly I think I am in a minority of one. I'm with you, Sarcelle, but agree that it'd be hard to convince others to go along with it, especially at Christmastime! And good idea about donating stuff we don't want to 'beauty banks'. I'm too cheap and Brexit is also slightly on my mind to get rid of all of my stash - I do want to gradually use up as much as I can and not buy anything new that I don't need. I will need a new tinted moisturiser/foundation soon, but won't spend too much on it.

Chickenvindasaag · 28/02/2019 08:18

Well an empty deoderant! It's a start at least!
Boots for a prescription yesterday. I did not buy the la roche posay on 3 for 2. Even though my brain tried to sell it to me as brexit prep

ElspethFlashman · 28/02/2019 08:59

Good will power!

I'm going into Boots today too as shockingly, I am running out of several things at once.

  • dry shampoo
  • mascara
  • day cream
  • facial sunscreen.

The dry shampoo will be Batiste, the sunscreen will be the Soltan one as its fine, the mascara will probably be an Essence one from Penneys/Primark next door (they're v. cheap but excellent). So that's not much money really.

The only outlier is the day cream. I really want an Avene one but am debating whether just getting a tub of Nivea Soft isn't good enough. I feel guilty spending the money on Avene. I'll look at the price and if I get a heart attack I'll get the Nivea but if its not too bad I'll get the Avene.

I'm aiming to have a solid plan going in so I stay on track and get nothing else! Fail to prepare and prepare to fail and all that!

Chickenvindasaag · 28/02/2019 09:31

Elspeth I use nivea soft as a night cream. It's really good. I have very oily skin so it's too heavy for the day for me, if you had normal/dry skin it'd probably work very well.

ElspethFlashman · 28/02/2019 13:39

In the end I did gasp at the price of the Avene and couldn't justify it, but felt a bit deflated getting the Nivea, so I split the difference and got Weleda Skin Food instead which was roughly in the middle of the two in cost and which I've always wanted to try.

Sunscreen has gotten so expensive! LRP Anthelios has gotten crazy. Feck that. Its not made of gold! I got one literally half the price.

I found the Essence mascara - 4 quid! BUT. I did a bad thing. I couldn't remember which colour tube was the one I liked so I got the one with purple writing and the one with orange writing. So 8 quid. I feel a bit bad about that. There's no justification for getting two, even when cheap. I just knew one wasnt great and one was good and didn't want to risk the wrong one. But still.

Mind you, I could have gotten 4 for the price of one L'Oréal! But I know these mental gymnastics are dangerous and we use them as excuses.

Chickenvindasaag · 28/02/2019 20:33

Elspeth Agree re the mental gymnastics. It's amazing how easy it is to convince yourself youth NEED something!
I'm contemplating using the last of the aveeno nappy cream as eye cream. Will report back.
I've never properly used eye cream before but I'm now mid thirties and made the mistake of looking in the mirror in full on daylight ShockHmmShock

Peridot1 · 01/03/2019 02:27

Chickenvindasaag - eye creams tend to be lighter formulations. I would be worried that using something heavy and not meant for the eye area would be worse than not using anything. Especially a nappy cream which is probably quite heavy? You can get tiny little lumps on the eyelids from using too much eye cream which I had at one point. Do use an eye cream but use one that is an actual eye cream. Doesn’t have to be expensive.

Chickenvindasaag · 01/03/2019 08:22

Thanks peridot I tend to use very light moisturisers as my skin is very oily. Eye creams have always seemed quite heavy! I'll find something else, I'm sure there are eye creams lurking in the drawer of facestuff

tinyradish · 01/03/2019 17:00

2 more empties!

-B.Hydrated hyaluronic booster - really liked this & would definitely purchase again. Its very affordable if I remember correctly & I prefer it to the nip + fab one. Although the packaging makes it quite difficult to get the product out near the end.

-Collection lengthening mascara - OK, wouldn't buy again. Need to find a decent cheap mascara. Chucking this out as its dried up & will continue using a Younique one I have that also needs to be thrown soon. I'll buy a new mascara when that's completely finished.

LHMB · 01/03/2019 20:57

Late to the thread but could I join in? I made a rule with myself in the new year that I won’t buy anything else until I use up what I already have, I have soo much stuff, and feel bad about how much money I’ve wasted on stuff I never use, I have so much makeup. Was in Superdrug yesterday, normally I end up buying so much stuff that I don’t really need as already have heaps of it, this time I managed to resist temptation and only bought the things I needed which I’d ran out of. Was tempted by some highlighters and eyeshadows but thought to myself don’t need any more, still got loads to use up. Really trying to cut down on my spending, I can be a bit of an impulse buyer, suffer with depression and bpd which can sometimes make me spend for the feel good factor but I’m being strict with myself now.
I do tend to splurge when it comes to hair products as I’m very fussy about my hair and it has been damaged from bleaching and straightening, so I don’t skrimp on my hair but am not going to buy anymore high end branded hair products until I’ve used the ones i have. Will still keep going to the salon every two weeks for the Olaplex treatments I’ve been getting, and gettting my nails done every 4 weeks is also something I like to treat myself with, both make me feel better selfish esteem and mood wise.
Haven’t bought any new clothes/shoes/boots/jewellery/bags for months and months either which is very unlike me so that’s a positive improvement too

LHMB · 01/03/2019 20:59

*self esteem, not selfish

Sarcelle · 03/03/2019 16:38

Lapsed and went with my DH to a TK Maxx on Friday because he wanted something. Saw a Paul Costelloe cross body bag for 40 quid. Really liked it. Didn't need it but bought it. It is still on the PC website for £115 so proper bargain. Gave myself a talking to, returned it this afternoon.

Bought a Barry M nail hardener. Needed, my nails are splitting at the moment.

Chickenvindasaag · 03/03/2019 16:53

Also lapsed. Determined to restart. Bloody Boots 3 for 2 and bloody lack of willpower

Sarcelle · 03/03/2019 18:27

At least I could return mine. Do Boots do refunds on change of mind purchases? Perhaps you can try. Not sure why I wobbled this weekend but I think seeing Spring ranges in shops made me want to spend. I actually made the decision to return in the small hours. Woke up, couldn't sleep, and for some reason it came into my head, and that I should return it.

Chickenvindasaag · 03/03/2019 18:35

I'll have a go sarcelle i suspect that because it's cosmetics they'll say no

Sarcelle · 03/03/2019 19:14

Nothing ventured. If they do, report back. Could be handy to know, I am sure I will have a Boots lapse at some point!

LHMB · 03/03/2019 19:29

Really tempted by a dress I’ve seen online in an email. I really shouldn’t look at the emails, or unsubscribe from them. Bought a brow pencil yesterday but needed one, completely ran out and didn’t have anymore. Have used up an I love... shower cream and an N Spa hot cloth cleanser. Don’t need to buy more yet as have 3 more I love... shower creams, plus dove bars, which I’ll probably just use from now on instead of shower gel/cream/body wash, and I have a Superdrug hot cloth cleanser

ElspethFlashman · 03/03/2019 19:45

I'm not in a No Buy with Clothes, so I bought a pair of ankle boots. BUT it was a considered purchase as I went out to the pub with New Friends wearing my trusty old trainers, only to realise every woman there (incl. New Friends) were wearing heeled ankle boots and looked fab.... And I looked like a hick, lol.

So I bought some cheap ones from Wallis of all places which will hopefully be a staple for a looooong time to come. I must have been the only woman in the country who didn't own a pair of going-out ankle boots. I'm trying to get my mojo back despite still being deep in nappy territory.

But am happy with my discipline in Beauty stuff. Am at the end of a Neutrogena Hydro Boost gel creme which I use at night and I absolutely hate it, so am glad. It stings me! Angry I have a replacement bought since before Xmas, the Aldi Lacura Q10 night cream which I loooooove and I shouldn't have strayed from.

Bellsandwhistle · 05/03/2019 17:12

Still managing well with beauty but had a few clothing lapses! Dithering but think I’ll return it all. Made the mistake of browsing in a few shops when I’d spare time and fell into temptation. So new rule keep out of shops but literally go through my wardrobe each week and rediscover forgotten items and wear them!!

Peridot1 · 05/03/2019 17:37

I have used up a few things! Travel sizes. Hair mousse and a heat protection spray. Actually the heat spray’s lid was loose so I think it spilled in my toilet bag. Need to replace as don’t have another.

And I finished up a bar of soap by the sink in my bathroom. It was a hotel one and another hotel one has replaced it.

Went out for lunch today and put make up on. Hated it all. It looked really harsh. So I’m going to chuck everything I used today. Except the Bare Minerals powder. None of it suits me. Eye crayon was too yellow. Eye liner makes me look red eyed. Mascara has gone clumpy. Lipstick was too harsh.

Don’t need to replace anything except the heat protection spray.

Have looked at clothes but managed to talk myself out of everything I was tempted by. I want to lose weight before I buy anything.

Elspeth - I dread to think how many pairs of boots and ankle boots I have! Dressy one with high heels which I never wear. Dressy ones with lower heels that I wear occasionally. Everyday ones. Far too many!

ElspethFlashman · 05/03/2019 17:55

Another empty - The Ordinary Retinol. Won't repurchase, I thought it was OK but I want something that gives results in a shorter time frame. So I have replaced with The Ordinary Aloha Lipoic Acid which is a different thing but meant to give an immediate effect.

So we'll see. I'm getting a bit jaded by all these acids tbh, but I want to try different ones before I dump the entire concept!

tinyradish · 06/03/2019 07:06

I've used up a Burts Bees Mama Bee body oil - enjoyed using it as it was lovely but glad to be finished as I have lots of other pregnancy body lotions/oils/butters that people got me as gifts. So... Onto the next one. :)
