No spend beauty 2019

Bellsandwhistle · 26/12/2018 21:02

So after Liberty and M and S advent calanders plus a few presents I’m gonna attempt a no beauty spend 2019. Will eventually need deodorant and shampoo I guess but will see how far I can get before spending....

This may be a better thread for me than the hoarders thread, you don't mind me joining? I used to be a hoarder but not anymore....it really helps living in the countryside with no shops & working in an office surrounded by a whole lot of nothing, so no temptation anywhere!

I have to buy online generally & just get what I need with the occasional treat. However being on a fairly tight budget means I'm quite frugal.

I stocked up on all sorts after Christmas due to having lots of vouchers, so should be OK for many things for a while. Especially body moisturisers & skincare.

Will need to buy mascara & shower gel soon - I've been using the same mascara for months (oops) & do not have any shower gel back ups.

:)

My ds (almost 2) has helped me finish a Hibiskiss lip balm. It was nice and a pretty colour that blended well with my lipstick, but it wouldn't go back down into the tube after the wee one got it. It was at least 4 years old so perhaps for the best that it's gone! So thanks ds!

The chocolate scented shower gel on the other hand...

KatyS36 · 04/02/2019 21:02

Checking in. I've been good so far, no beauty spend to date. I resisted a good clarins offer in January and am glad I did. I'm enjoying my shower gels as when they are gone it's back to basic ish soap for rest of the year.

I had a sales budget for clothes and picked up a few things but that's it for the year unless I really need something.

It's very relaxing not scanning websites 'in case' and not having to return anything.

ElspethFlashman · 04/02/2019 23:18

I finished a small size body butter from a ted baker box i got as a Christmas present. Now I only have 2 more full-size Ted Baker body lotions to go. Hmm I don't even like the smell! And meanwhile i have a full size Mixa one just gathering dust. So needless to say I won't be buying lotion this year.

However I also have panned one single eyeshadow, a skin coloured one for my browbone. That'll be gone completely within a week as the edges are falling away. Oh the satisfaction! I know I have about 3 skin coloured eyeshadow though, so will work away on the next one after this.

Have also hit serious pan on a face powder - still have 2 after that but am still excited as that power took years.

and have major dip in a shimmery taupe eyeshadow and will definitely hit pan in the next week. I have Mac Satin Taupe and the Naked Palette so also have taupe options after this one. I

So I'm alternately delighted about progress in getting through old shit, and horrified i actually don't need to replace/buy anything!I

INeedAWittyNameChange · 05/02/2019 13:00

I finished a Bath & Body Works shower gel this morning. So glad to see the back of it - bought it on holiday in October. Don't need to replace though as have at least four in the cupboard.

Bellsandwhistle · 05/02/2019 19:19

Welcome tinyradish I enjoy the beauty hoarders thread but have been enabled there at times with people recommending products or putting on deals! That’s where I first heard of a certain £200 advent calander!!
elspeth do you use eye shadow every day? I don’t buy eyeshadow much but have a naked pallet, a CT one, a sleek one, oh another CT one plus quite a few single ones from no 7 gift sets and the like. I think I’ll have to start daily application. Usually I only wear when going out but not for everyday. Met a friend for lunch today who had tonnes on and rather than think that’s a bit much for everyday I just thought that looks nice so maybe I need to go for it! I do wear foundation, blush, eyeliner mascara brow tint etc everyday do not exactly low maintenance!

Only on work days. On days off I look like shit, frankly! But I live in the countryside so slim chance of bumping into anyone, lol.

I never used to wear eyeshadow to work, just mascara really - but then I thought what a waste of eyeshadow, I need to start using shit up. So first I started wearing this old mac paintpot I had just to make my eyes look bright and awake at least. Then after a few weeks I started adding a skin coloured single eyeshadow over that to set it, all smeared on with a finger.

Then I eventually graduated to using a shimmery taupe eyeshadow on the lid and the skin coloured one above, still with the paintpot underneath as a primer (cos eyeshadow creases like mad on its own in me).

So now I use 3 things but it happened gradually really. And as a conscious effort to use stuff up. But it's just a swishy wash of taupe - I'm never gonna do any fancyness at 6.30 am.

I do definitely look better for it though. I get compliments sometimes. So it's killing 2 birds with one stone.

BTW I have also started using a highlighter every work day (gasp!). I have about 3 to use up. I bought a cheapie fan brush in Primark and have realised it takes all of 5 seconds so why not?? I just swirl in the pan and stripe on. Bish bash bosh.

Thatsnotmybaby · 05/02/2019 21:08

Interesting post @ElspethFlashman; I used to wear extra make up during the day just to use things up but I've given up recently as getting myself and two DC out in the morning takes all my time. However, I've just put a work/handbag make up bag together so I might pop a few extra bits in there; might be easier to find the extra minute or two to apply something extra later in the day.
I used up a sample of Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant; I'd forgotten how much I like the product. I might treat myself to it sometime but not right now.

Bellsandwhistle · 05/02/2019 21:51

thatsnotmybaby I’m buying that microfoliant cleanser once stash gone. It’s good.
elspeth right I’m working tmw so out comes the sleek palette...
I’d live to see what you do re eye - any chance of an eye photo?!
I’ve about 6 highlighters and a fan brush do mag do that as well.

I went shopping today. Well for a wander around Debenhams and M&S. Saw some nice jumpers in nice colours. And some trousers in the M&S sale rack. But bought nothing. I have so many jumpers I never wear. And I live in jeans or jeggings so no need for more dressy trousers.

I know I have some gaps in my wardrobe but I need a big sort out to actually figure out what they are!

And in other news I’ve been out the last two days so have worn make up. And am off to Dublin on Thursday for a week so will wear makeup a lot then. And get through more of my skin care sample and travel sizes. In fact I think I left a drawer full at my Dads last time I was there!

Sarcelle · 06/02/2019 08:49

I WAH a lot and I have decided to apply make up and perfume on those days. I don't usually bother. I want to deplete stocks so I am using up my make up that isn't my favourite but too wasteful to bin. It is going to take me years.

I look at my stash of stuff and despair really. I am buying a new kitchen and I could have saved up all that money wasted on stuff to buy something we really needed.

Sarcelle · 06/02/2019 08:51

On the plus side I always buy alcohol free mouthwash. I am running out and found a Sainsbury own brand one for 80p rather than the 2 quid one I get in Savers. I was so chuffed with my 1.20 saved!

Peridot1 · 06/02/2019 09:50

Every little helps Sarcelle!

So having been so proud of not buying anything yesterday I ended up ordering a top from Next last night! I am actually short of dressy tops and have a few nights out planned this week when I’m away. I think I’ve worn the same shirt the last four or five times I’ve been out in the evening. I’ll nip in to pick it up later.

I am also going to bring forward at least part of my wardrobe sort out. Will try to do an hour today. Had a quick look yesterday and it is even more of a mess than I thought. As is my chest of drawers. And the drawers in my bed are full of stuff I haven’t worn at all this year.

Inthetropics · 07/02/2019 14:31

I'd like to join!

I am also on the beauty hoarders thread but it has a very diferent vibe than what i'm looking for. Sometimes when i'm there i feel like buying more stuff and i also tend to be very entertained by the full on makeup/toiletries talk which is not what i want to be focusing on right now.

I have a HUUUGE toiletries stash that i want to use up in order to get to the point of having only a small basket with backups (basic stuff like toothpaste usually bought on discount). Now i'm using a small armoir to keep all the products.

I don't have a problem when it comes to clothing - i own very few pieces i love. Will get whatever i need, which is what i've doing for some time.

I want to know how many items i have so i can start a countdown of my stash in order to get even more motivated! I plan on posting this here soon. I know there'll be tons of lotions and moisturizers. Lol

ElspethFlashman · 07/02/2019 17:03

First replacements of 2019 here!

Conditioner
Box of hair dye
Clear nail polish
Sports bra - my old one has to go, the bagginess is just too embarrassing.

Total spend: 32.99. I have put that total on my lock screen in small writing under the time, and will add if I spend anymore. This way I never lose sight of my actual monthly spend.

moimichme · 07/02/2019 18:08

Well done, Elspeth - that's such a good idea for keeping track!

I have finished a conditioner, but there was another already waiting in the stash.

Inthetropics · 07/02/2019 23:03

So, it's worse than i thought... i counted 266 products but i couldn't find a manicure set that has tons of nail varnish and there's probably some stuff that i didn't find so i'll be rounding the number up to 300.

There are 33 bar soaps and 33 shampoos... i'm so embarassed!

Eesha · 07/02/2019 23:17

@Inthetropics wow! I have three soaps and thought mine was a lot!

Inthetropics · 08/02/2019 00:50

@Eesha I know! Blush It's A LOT! I use around 14 a year so it'll be more than 2 years to use up my stash!

ElspethFlashman · 08/02/2019 11:05

How did you even accumulate 33 shampoos? Are you a secret shampoo fetishism? Grin

Are there any half empty that you can pour in to one bottle?

Peridot1 · 08/02/2019 14:04

I know I have more than 33 soaps. Blush

I didn’t get to do my wardrobe sort out. Nipped into town to pick up my Next purchase. Ended up buying a new bag, long cardigan and jumper! The jumper was one of the ones I had looked at on Tuesday. I kept thinking about it so decided to get it. The long caridigan was in the sale - it’s a coatigan I suppose. Burgundy colour that I love.

But no more shopping now. She says

In other news I’m staying at my Dad’s and had forgotten I had a small stash here! Shampoos and conditioners sound hair products in travel sizes. I buy coming over and never finish and leave them here. And yes I bought again yesterday!

ElspethFlashman · 08/02/2019 18:34

Peridot do you want to tot up your total spend this week? Or would that be too scary yet?

But maybe if you figure out your spend this week, you can decide a total budget for next week?

tinyradish · 08/02/2019 20:38

Crikey, that's a lot of soap! I have maybe 4 or 5 but they take so long to get through as they're only used in the bathrooms for hand washing.

Bought a new concealer (old one had completely run out)

Finished an eye cream & a daily Sukin moisturiser. Already have another vitamin c eye cream & the body shop oils of life day cream that I bought with Xmas vouchers to replace them with - I must say I'm really enjoying the oily of life range. Silky smooth.

Also bought a £1 radox shower gel as current one is running low & shower gel is not something I ever have back up of.

Ordered a coat from topshop as I'd really like a new every day one to replace the current one I've had for 5+ years & love! But it's getting slightly tatty. I do have other coats of course but they're all smarter options so feel this is OK.

Had some money left on a gift card so got that for about half price.

Inthetropics · 08/02/2019 23:39

I use soap instead of shower gel and had a habit of buying vegan soap whenever i ran into it which was a lot of times! Shampoo is clearly a fetish, no reason to diguise it now that Elspeth has exposed me! Grin

I've used up one product that was almost finished today and combined two hand washes into one, so am counting this as two used up toiletries.

298 left to go

ElspethFlashman · 09/02/2019 09:04

A suprise empty this morning! My Cerave moisturising lotion which I was using on my face.

Really liked it, very lightweight and the pump was terrific. But thick plastic so hard to see your progress!

I dug about and found a tube of moisturiser from The Ordinary. I'm relieved not to have to buy another this month. I really don't want to go over 50 quid this month on replacements and my mascara isn't long for this world.

And now I have no day moisturiser in the house, only night cream. Feels good to have only 1 thing in a category. Ideally I'd like to get there with all skincare this Spring. And in my head each one thing will be super considered and FAHBulous and i'll essentially be a French person, lol.
