Thanks Queen , ahem! I don't get why she was The Queen Mother then (not English). So she's the Queen, husband is king and then he dies but she's not the Queen obvs but where does the mother bit come in if not in relation to the Queen being her daughter? The King Father is funny!

mikado1 · 20/11/2018 22:10

Oh thank you all. But still don't get the mother bit?

QueenOfTheAndals · 20/11/2018 22:14

She's the Queen and the mother of the monarch, which is where the mother not comes from.

A Queen, not the Queen.

So if Kate outlives William she will be either the queen mother or the dowager queen? I always thought she would be the kings mother Blush

IPromiseIWontBeNaughty · 20/11/2018 22:21

This may explain it

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queen_mother

mikado1 · 20/11/2018 22:22

Ah ok. So Kate could also be the QM, though an unlikely choice perhaps. I understand now. Thanks. I preferred the KM bit tho!

ajandjjmum · 20/11/2018 22:23

I don't think the Queen Mother is (was) a formal title, it was just introduced to overcome the confusion caused by two Queen Elizabeths.

Presumably when William dies, Catherine would remain Queen Catherine (unless George happened to marry someone called Catherine, in which case the confusion would again arise!). Confused

IPromiseIWontBeNaughty · 20/11/2018 22:26

According to Wikipedia the term QM has been around since 1560! Who knew?

VanillaSugary · 20/11/2018 22:27

Not the best photo of Sophie Wessex. The boxy costs don't really suit her https://www.instagram.com/p/BqatIsHRFB/?utmsource=igsharesheet&igshid=160wysnosggdr

Damn. The link doesn't work. Sorry!

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 20/11/2018 22:37

So if Diana had lived and outlived Charles, she would be the Princess Mother (of Prince William)
So does Camilla become the Queen Stepmother?

Also where Monarchs have abdicated, eg in the Netherlands, Queen Beatrix demoted herself so she is now Princess Beatrix.
Whereas in Spain; King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia have retained their titles...

FATEdestiny · 20/11/2018 22:43

What would have happened to Diana, Princess of Wales' title if she lived, once William became Prince of Wales (and therefore Catherine Princess of Wales)?

Would she have lost all titles, or be given another title to use?

Clionba · 20/11/2018 22:44

No, if Diana had outlived Charles, but not HM, she would have been the Dowager Princess of Wales. Or maybe just the Queen of Hearts 💕

CaptainMorgansMistress · 20/11/2018 22:52

Remember though that Diana wasn’t allowed to be THE princess of Wales after their divorce. She was Diana, Princess of Wales. So as she wasn’t a queen herself, wouldn’t have needed any additional title.
Henry Tudor’s mother Margaret Beaufort titled herself My Lady the Kings Mother which they might have recycled to give her a formal connection to King William.

Interestingly, Diana also lost her HRH status when they divorced, about which she was reportedly very upset and it was said that william promised her that he’d give it back to her when he is king.
I wonder if he will do that posthumously when he is king? (Assuming is true of course!)

CaptainMorgansMistress · 20/11/2018 22:54

And I’m sure I read that both Diana and Fergie would have had to give up their titles if they remarried. I can’t imagine that Diana wouldn’t have remarried if she had lived.

QueenOfTheAndals · 20/11/2018 22:54

Diana would've probably been Mrs Very Rich Philanthropist's Wife by now!

I often think Letizia is a great role model for Meghan, as she was a newscaster before becoming Royal so also came from a TV background and had a certain advantage in terms of understanding media. But mostly her fabulous dress sense and she is also very slim and petite in her body type. She balances looking regal with originality and having unique looks. She almost always looks incredible IMHO.

pallisers · 20/11/2018 23:21

I once read that as the haemophilia appeared in the RF from Victoria she is either a million to one spontaneous carrier or (more likely) not actually her fathers daughter.

I thought the medical opinion was that it was a spontaneous mutation probably because her father was so old when she was conceived - older fathers have higher incidents of gene mutations (and schizophrenia I think) in their children. I don't think her mother met Sir John until after her husband died. The Romanoff and Spanish haemophilia descends from Victoria too.

itswinetime · 20/11/2018 23:22

I can't see it to be honest given the average Windsor life expectancy Charles could be on the throne for 20 years by which point Diana would have been dead 40 years (rounded figures for ease). I can't see William wanting to drag all that back up when it doesn't change anything. I'm not even sure if it would have been possible if she was alive how does the HRH work would the mother of the king been entitled to it? Even if she was never Queen it would have been very complicated.

IdaBWells · 20/11/2018 23:24

Yes Queen there was lots of speculation from the royal historian/commentator types that she would need a fabulously wealthy man who would have the resources to shield her and protect her from the press; like Onassis did for Jackie Kennedy. Dodi was in that league but unfortunately it seems that his personal protection officers were not of the standard of Scotland Yard.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 21/11/2018 05:42

I thought the whole Dodi thing was to make Hasnat Khan; the heart surgeon jealous. Dodi actually had a fiancee On another yatch. He was due to get married after that summer. Mohammed Al Fayed bought another yatch; and the Windsor’s house in the Bois de Boulogne;, so that Dodi could woo Diana.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 21/11/2018 05:51

Diana still had her own title Lady, so she would never have been plain Mrs Anything.
I think much as we would have liked her to marry a billionaire philanthropist; she was drawn to men from Asia and the Middle East. Allegedly part of the reason she fell out with her mother, France Shand Kydd before her death.
The visit to Pakistan was also to meet Hasnat Khans family.

IdaBWells · 21/11/2018 05:52

Who knows Curly? Diana was apparently wildly in love with Hasnat and had visited his family in Pakistan. Whatever the situation with Dodi, his security personnel should never have allowed them to get into a car with a drunk driver at the wheel.

VanillaSugary · 21/11/2018 06:38

But. The Bodyguard, paid for by Al Fayed, was basically a lackey and did as he was told.
