"I agree wine. It's a symbiotic relationship. They cannot expect all one way traffic- to use the press for their own devices."

Exactly this. I'm actually a republican! I'm just in it for the jewels. It pissed me off that they have - because of their inherited position & continuing only by the goodwill of us plebs - vaults full of incredible art & historic jewels. If they aren't going to share it with the nation - ie by letting us see it in use then it should all be removed & put in a museum.

The other Royal families recognise this & major events are televised - & it is entirely reasonable to expect a couple of formal pictures of the family & then the VIPs (thank you Harald et al - I love Norway).

(I'm surprised the Greek-non-Royals weren't all over instagram, they usually are Wink )

CaptainMorgansMistress · 15/11/2018 10:52

I watched the documentary and it occurred to me - why did Kate have no security with her?
Obviously at that stage she didn’t qualify for RF/public funded protection but - her parents are very very wealthy, Charles is also very wealthy and William had independent wealth of his own at that point too.
Why did no one pay a (not enormous) amount for unobtrusive support when needed? Surely they must have considered it - especially in light of what happened to Diana. Which leads me to the only conclusion which is that they decided against it.
So either it wasn’t really warranted - and that filmed photographer scrum on Kate’s 25th Birthday was a lone exception. Or they chose not to give her support in order that they could later insist that the British Press not buy paparazzi photos of her.
Which feels rather manipulative to me.

Paradyning · 15/11/2018 10:53

There was one car shot of CP Mary with big dangly earrings on and a dark looking dress. Her husband looked a bit worse for wear.

DontCallMeCharlotte · 15/11/2018 10:55

And it isn't just the press, considering the public purse finds them then the least they could do is release a photo or two!!

Quite!

It's the same with the Diplomatic Reception. Full-on tiara event and all we get is Kate wearing the Cambridge Lovers Knot Tiara and looking moody in the back of a car.

Why can't they just issue one group photo LIKE EVERY OTHER ROYAL FAMILY DOES? How hard would it be?

I hate them this morning. Harumph.

Ferretcatcher · 15/11/2018 10:57

Much as I enjoy looking at royal fashion [and lurking on this thread! Smile] surely it would have been in very poor taste for the Royals to pose for jolly shots while the country is going through such a serious political crisis?

Paradyning · 15/11/2018 11:07

What crisis?? I just care about the frocks!

Spudlet · 15/11/2018 11:12

It would be nice to see some more official photos, I agree. In the social media age it just seems out of step - but then I suppose they kind of want to be a bit out of step, to differentiate themselves from any other celebrity. It's just a shame that the relationship seems so distrusting, but then you can see why it would be.

Especially for official, diplomatic events though - really, you'd hope for some decent shots, not just back of the car ones.

Laniakea · 15/11/2018 11:14

well the party is happening anyway - full of not only our royals but all the Euros, the paps are all over the cars, the Queen's speech was released. A couple of formal line up pictures wouldn't have added to the fuss. Either that or cancel it completely.

Since the Brexit shitstorm will go on for months/years, I doubt they'd cancel for it. It's an interesting question though - if there had been an acute national crisis, something like a major terrorist attack I bloody hope they would stop the party.

BlingLoving · 15/11/2018 11:33

Totally agree - one family shot wouldn't hurt would it!? But I do understand their desire for "private" events vs "public".

As for the press, the problem is that they never seem to let up. They complain about kate and william not giving them access r being difficult at public events, and I'm sympathetic. But when your mother was KILLED by a press pack and your wife had a telephoto lens aimed at her from who knows how far away so that shots of her topless have been spread all over the world, who the fuck can blame them? And yes, the bulk of them are no longer doing telephoto sense into holiday resorts, but it only takes one. Imagine living a life where even when you go t a super expensive, luxurious, private resort you have to be worried that some enteprising photographer will figure it out and invade that privacy with long lens or drones or whatever....

fredleighton · 15/11/2018 11:35

I would love to see the dresses but it's a private party and I think on your birthday you're entitled to have a private party if that's what you want. They had the official 70th birthday garden party in the summer; one of my friends was lucky enough to be invited.

AhoyDelBoy · 15/11/2018 11:54

a beautiful shot of Catherine and Charlotte for all of us sad we didn’t get a proper look at Kate’s gown last night Sad
I love everything about this photo.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 15/11/2018 11:59

Its a bit rich calling it a private event, when Prince Charles has been going into PR overdrive and then posted a shot on his twitter page. (Which I appreciated)
Its more the younger royals who will not "play".
Harry & Meghan are more accessible. They have just done a huge 3 weeks tour, so we were probably spoiled, But that was for who's benefit exactly?
If there was no press following them, then there would be no point in going. And the press wouldn't go if we didn't want to read about them. I think they should take a look at how the scandinavian and even spanish & dutch royals give access to the media and learn some lessons sharpish.
The internet and global interest is not going to go away.

DivinityMum · 15/11/2018 12:02

In case anyone hasn't seen, the DM has just published more pictures of people leaving the party and Queen Rania arriving. From the looks on everyone's faces (and the sneakers!) it was a loooong night! And dangling earrings was definitely the theme.

EmGee · 15/11/2018 12:03

I agree with fred. A private party is a private party. I can't believe the Queen's toast to PC was appearing on Twitter as she was speaking.

I watched the second part of the press documentary last night and am not at all surprised by the Cambridge's attitude. I think PW and PH must be scarred for life after all they went through as kids.

itswinetime · 15/11/2018 12:10

I do agree to extent it's a private party let them all let there hair down but Charles, William and Harry and their spouses are 'working' royals. I know they have their own money to but their whole lifestyle is heavily publicly subsidised (at least that's my understanding). I don't know who paid for what last night but even the venue Buckingham palace is being renovated with public money. I understand that is the price of having a monarchy but the flip side is they have to engage the public and give them what the want to extent as well ( dresses tiaras and heels in this case). Taking the royals weddings the evening doos were private I had no problem with that as we saw Kate/Meghan/Eugenie all dressed up on route. It didn't effect the privacy of the event and it kept people happy.

The state banquets are a bit different I k ow there are know posed pics of Kate Meghan ect but I think that's protocol as the queen Charles and camillia has one. But we do get full length pics it's enough. At the end of the day if they want a private life so badly they can always step out of the monarchy and live a normal life but they don't do they!

I do sympathies re the press o completely see why William is reluctant but in 2018 they can interact with the public without them. They take the pic they release it on social media, the public are happy and the press haven't been able to intrude. It just seems so simple to me.

And that's who someone pretty pro monarchy feels all for the want of some pictures Wink

If you believe some of the more insane blogs around, she's another one who's trapped him into marriage and he's developed a drinking problem as a result!

Paradyning · 15/11/2018 12:11

That was no accident the Queen's toast leaked. That's what hey think we want to hear. No it fucking isn't.
And yes, it may be a private party but at public expense. There should have been one family shot.

Laniakea · 15/11/2018 12:12

There's a full length picture of Fred & Mary been released too.

I am enjoying all the earrings. It's being opined that Meg's are probably a loan from Camilla - maybe from one of the very many sets she's been given by the Saudis or the Sultan of Brunei (she's also had jewellery gifts from Kuwait, Qatar, Oman and Bahrain) - there are some pictures of (some) of those sets here queensjewelvault.blogspot.com/p/duchess-of-cornwall-tiaras-necklaces.html (at the bottom)

Mary's gone for one-shouldered blue velvet.

I'm with you Paradyning! It's not as if we're asking for the whole thing to be on youtube (see the Danes/Swedes/Norway).

Paradyning · 15/11/2018 12:26

Wow she looks stunning

Paradyning · 15/11/2018 12:29

I seen those theories Queen. They're a bit crazy aren't they. And they reallllyyyyy hate Mary.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 15/11/2018 12:35

Yay to the Danish & Norwegian Royals.
Haakon & Fred look great in their midnight blue tuxes,

Ktay · 15/11/2018 12:37

Queen Sonja of Norway not feeling well so has pulled out of today's engagement with the Queen. Hope it’s just a mild hangover!

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 15/11/2018 12:41

They all looked pretty sober at 3am.
Its not as bad as the Mahiki days!
