I'm sure I read a Bill Bryson book in which he described Elizabeth I rocking up to visit some Lord or another - in a house which he'd either specifically built or at least extensively remodelled just for her visit, and in which he laid on hugely costly entertainment, only for her to pocket the cutlery... maybe a bit of light pilfering is an ancient Royal tradition Grin

VanillaSugary · 08/11/2018 22:14

Oooh , thank you!! So, hair in a ponytail, no earrings, coat or jacket. We can do this!

YearOfYouRemember · 08/11/2018 22:14

I'm taking the credit for tonight's dress Grin.

@QueenOfTheAndals

It's confusing because traditionally going back to the Plantagenet reign it was that way.

As the Duchy Of York WON'T be inherited Louis remains a likely recipient

In terms of titles proximity to the Crown is extremely important currently the York girls are the children of the son of the monarch, soon they will be the monarchs nieces, then the monarchs cousin and then the monarchs cousin once removed, which is a long way from the Crown.

I expect it to revert to tradition, I may be wrong

Clionba · 08/11/2018 22:19

I wonder what will happen in the future with titles and same sex marriages? If Louis becomes Duke of York and marries a man, is he another Duke of York? If Princess Charlotte marries a woman, is she also Princess Charlotte of Cambridge/Wales? Then we have the issue of a monarch in a same sex marriage. Interesting..... Hmm

QueenOfTheAndals · 08/11/2018 22:19

Oh yes, women can't inherit titles so I'm sure it'll end up Louis'. But if Andrew takes it upon himself to remarry to a woman 25 years younger and has a son then it'll go to him!

PawneeParksDept · 08/11/2018 22:27

But
But

He HAS to remarry Fergie! No justice if he marries some girl as young as his DDs

IPromiseIWontBeNaughty · 08/11/2018 22:34

The royals will be running out of titles if they aren’t careful. What’s left - possibly York, Clarence I think. Any others? I’m sure there must be but I’ll defer to the experts on this thread. Wink

VanillaSugary · 08/11/2018 22:40

There's always the Duke of Earl and the Dukes of Hazzard.

FlyMaybe · 08/11/2018 22:40

There are a few vacant dukedoms. They revert to the Crown if they aren't inherited...

VanillaSugary · 08/11/2018 22:42

Just popping this little Greek God into everyone's night time dreams. 💕

GrumbleBumble · 08/11/2018 22:48

Vanilla I believe Dukes of Hazard is held in permanent reserve pending the birth to f male twins.

PawneeParksDept · 08/11/2018 22:50

Burgundy, Buckingham, Shaftesbury basically any bad guy in a Tudor/Elizabethan type thing

There's the Duchy of Devonshire of course but that's in use still and may be one of the few without direct blood links

They bought that of course, going back, essentially.

OlennasWimple · 08/11/2018 22:52

I reckon the monarchy will have come to an end before we have an openly gay monarch

QueenOfTheAndals · 08/11/2018 22:55

I think Shaftesbury is already an Earldom and the French may have something to say about Burgundy!

PawneeParksDept · 08/11/2018 23:03

The title was "ours" at one point I think Q, that time when we temporarily owned Calais I don't know if it still is in the monarchs gift or if it's been retired!

Inniu · 08/11/2018 23:04

If Eugenie were Eugene but Beatrice was still Beatrice would he not be Earl of Inverness?
Actually what if either of them identify as male? Do they get the title?

PawneeParksDept · 08/11/2018 23:09

@Inniu

The voice of the lad who plays Prince William on The Windsor's screaming CONSTITUTIONAL CRISIS springs to mind in that scenario

QueenOfTheAndals · 08/11/2018 23:10

Alas no @Inniu, self-id doesn't stretch to the inheritance of titles! Beatrice probably would be at least a viscount if she'd been male, like James Severn is.

QueenOfTheAndals · 08/11/2018 23:12

@PawneeParksDept The Windsors is hilarious. The actor who's Harry played him in the (serious) play King Charles III too. And the actress playing Kate is Rowan Atkinson's girlfriend!

PawneeParksDept · 08/11/2018 23:16

I've watched a few and it does make me me wonder whether :

They've never watched it

Watch it and find it HILARIOUS

Watch it and cringe inside out at how they are portrayed

QueenOfTheAndals · 08/11/2018 23:16

Bedtime for me now but I shall leave you with . Because you just know she really is a bit like that!

OP posts:
PawneeParksDept · 08/11/2018 23:19

I bet it pisses Harry off to be constantly portrayed as thick

I think Williams portrayal of "I'd rather just be a normal bloke really" is a bit near the mark for him to find it funny.

I'd say the York's find it upsetting not funny

SenecaFalls · 08/11/2018 23:20

Some titles in the peerage of Scotland can be inherited by women in default of a male heir, but the highest I think are earldoms. And then in any new creation, the monarch can make provision for succession to a title by a woman. That's how Patricia Mountbatten became Countess Mountbatten of Burma in her own right.

Butterymuffin · 08/11/2018 23:51

It'd be a brave woman who took on being Andrew's second wife. I bet they'd still be living with Fergie!

Have said this before but I'd like to see Charlotte get a proper title comparable to the dukedoms that'll goto the boys. Princess Royal is a shoddy title IMO. It's like you haven't even got a name of your own anymore. And is surely tautologous.
