New My Royals - good for European royal watching

Coming up this month:

  • The Cambridges are at the Tusk Conservation Awards on Thursday the 8th
  • The Cambridges and Sussexes are at two Remembrance events this weekend the 10th/11th
  • The Sussexes have the Royal Variety Performance on the 19th

Plus Prince Charles turns 70 on the 14th but we may not get photos of the event as he's having a private party.

Re Charles: I saw him about two years ago at an event and thought then how old and unwell he looked. Far older than his age. He was stooped, with a very florid complexion.

VanillaSugary · 08/11/2018 16:51

Is anyone going to watch his documentary tonight?

QueenOfTheAndals · 08/11/2018 16:54

I'm home alone tonight so I could, but tbh I think I've learned more about him from this thread than from any documentary!

Don't forget W&K are out tonight so we can all be on gown-watch!

If you look at Philip when he was 70, he looked a lot younger than Charles does. I think Charles has always look older than his years, especially considering his cosseted, privileged lifestyle.

QueenOfTheAndals · 08/11/2018 17:25

Philip retained his good looks well into old age too and even now, at nearly 100, he is quite imposing-looking. Charles was never as handsome of course and even as a young man seemed old fogeyish. I think he modelled himself on Lord Mountbatten, which was probably fine for 1940s India but not so fine for the swinging sixties!

I'll be able to watch tonight, though I have a cold and am feeling a bit sorry for myself. Is it on at 9 or 10?

Clionba · 08/11/2018 17:33

9pm BBC1

Butterymuffin · 08/11/2018 17:38

Thanks Clionba. In that case I'll watch and then go up to bed and read any comments on here!

TipseyTorvey · 08/11/2018 17:48

Will watch too and watch this thread at the same time. I'm now 3/4 of the way through the Princess Magaret book Ma'am Darling and the more I read the more I dislike her but also realise what strength of character it must take to have all they have and not turn into a monster and end up beheaded like king charles. The queen has risen in my estimation.

beanaseireann · 08/11/2018 17:51

I couldn't be bothered watching a 'puff piece' on Charles. His PR team are working overtime at the moment as far as I'm concerned.
Ex King Albert of Belgium has been ordered by the courts to submit his DNA in a bid to establish if he is the father of a woman, Delphine Boël.
Albert unexpectedly succeeded the throne after his brother King Baudouin died aged 62, without children. Previously he had lived it up in the south of France apparently.
Because Albert abdicated, he is not above the law as his son, King Phillippe is.
So he must obey the courts ruling.
If the lady is his daughter his estate must be split between all his children including Delphine when he dies.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 08/11/2018 17:54

Phillip has definitely aged better than Charles

Anyway, there was talk when he was born; that he would never be king.
I do find it rather in bad taste him talking quite publicly about what sort of monarch he will be... ie when his mother is dead.

Paradyning · 08/11/2018 18:01

That's interesting about Albert!

What do we think Kate will wear. I'm praying for a JP over any of her most recent monstrosities.

Whoever mentioned up thread about having a jewellery room Windsor. I always wondered that. It would seem the most obvious secure location. I would be like a pig in shit in that room.

QueenOfTheAndals · 08/11/2018 18:05

That picture of the DoE at Gordonstoun and the second one of him in 1980 is where he resembles Charles the most. Anne is Queen Mary all over again and Edward looks like HM. As for Andrew, well...Wink

Only joking!

It's Albert of Belgium who was married to the gorgeous Paola wasn't it?

OP posts:
QueenOfTheAndals · 08/11/2018 18:06

Is married rather.

OP posts:
Paradyning · 08/11/2018 18:14

Yes. I think they split up for a while then reconciled.

eaglefly · 08/11/2018 18:19

Long time lurker don't post enough. But I do wonder whether all this Charles PR stuff is perhaps because the HM is thinking of handing over the baton.

QueenOfTheAndals · 08/11/2018 18:27

Harry speaking about asking Charles to walk with Meghan at their wedding. Also features Camilla talking about how he offered Doria his arm.

So this doc seems to generally be singing Charles' praises, yet last week he was happy for the DM to publish extracts of his biography that didn't paint his sons in the best light?

Strange man...

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 08/11/2018 18:31

When I wrote home that I had met Charles, my little sister got all excited and was convinced that he and I would start dating and that I would marry him. She was 6.
Awww!

QueenOfTheAndals · 08/11/2018 18:43

Some shots of Charles with George that I've not seen before.

I am also a third of the way through Ma'am Darling. She comes across as a really loathsome woman. My OH worked for someone who was a very good friend. There were some so many stories of how atrociously she behaved...

Alwayscheerful · 08/11/2018 18:50

I think the Queen may be considering passing the baton.

VanillaSugary · 08/11/2018 19:18

Didn't HM say that she would make Charles Regent when she turns 95 in 2021? (I think that's the date).

Has anyone listened to Margaret in Desert Island Discs which you can get on Radio 4 DID archive? She is so condescending to Roy the interviewer!

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 08/11/2018 19:20

Kate at the Tusk awards in 2013. George was only 8 weeks old. She looks gorgeous at that weight.

I think it is being spoken of quite openly that the Queen will make Charles Regent when she turns 95

I love that dress curly. - why do I not look like that?
