It sounds like Diana was actually closer to Raine at the time of her death than she was to her own mother. She and Raine used to meet quite often but her mother hadn't spoken to her for months. Apparently Frances became very religious late in life and had called Diana a whore, according to Paul Burrell.

As usual, Mail Online has the best photos of the Dutch visit today. I've never seen Sophie and Edward so animated, and even the Duke of Kent looks like he's enjoying himself - it must be the Maxima effect!

But why on why is Edward wedded to his double-breasted suits? They do nothing for him and the trousers appear gigantic.

Happy pictures.

Moononthehill28 · 24/10/2018 16:12

Diana was always falling out with people. She was not speaking to her mother when she died. She didn’t speak to her brother for a long time either after he refused her request to live in a cottage on the family estate.
I can never understand why her sisters seem to have no involvement in her life. She was on her own. What hope did she have really, poor girl.

PawneeParksDept · 24/10/2018 16:14

Frances Shand Kidd converted to Catholicism in later life it's true

Yes, I mean Diana herself was a very sheltered inexperienced teen when she married Charles, and the pressure effected her mental health.

Those who knew them socially (in their class) as I understand it, hugely sympathised with Charles, as well as Diana, because they could see it for themselves and at times he bore the brunt.

PawneeParksDept · 24/10/2018 16:16

I think that Diana's fallings out, which included Elton and Fergie, were due to her having significant mental imbalance and it going untreated - controversial I know

Moononthehill28 · 24/10/2018 16:21

She did see a psychiatrist at Charles’ insistence, but refused to go after a few sessions according to reports. Anyone would be mentally unbalanced living the life she did with a husband who didn’t love her and was having an affair.

PawneeParksDept · 24/10/2018 16:25

On a style note. I hate Max's pink number, too loud, too boxy, horrid black pattern bit

Minimammoth · 24/10/2018 16:36

I thought Kate’s ( Diana’s) tiara and pearl necklace were stunning on her. Proper, ‘ now I’ll show you some jewellery ‘ moment, I thin that is what the dress was simple. I liked it.

QueenOfTheAndals · 24/10/2018 16:39

I didn't think Kate's dress last night was simple, I thought it was way too fussy with all that ruching!

Diana definitely had issues - the reason she fell out with Fergie was because Fergie wrote in her autobiography that she'd borrowed a pair of her shoes and got a verruca from them!

Horsemad · 24/10/2018 16:39

I think my fave tiara is the Five Aquamarine. They're all fab but I really like this one.

Horsemad · 24/10/2018 16:41

How on earth would Fergie know she'd got a verucca from Diana's shoes?! She could have picked it up at any pool and I bet she frequented a few, what with all the hols she had.

Dumbledora · 24/10/2018 16:42

I was reading about Raine, and apparently she is buried in an almost unmarked grave with just a small wooden cross. I found that rather sad.

QueenOfTheAndals · 24/10/2018 16:45

More photos from last night's state dinner here. I don't know what that site is but it always has the best photos of the royals!

I don't usually like to comment about what the PM wears but her dress is not flattering. You can see in that photo of her that she has a decent figure but needed to go up a size or wear Spanx. Still, her job is to govern, not to be a fashion plate, so I shan't say anymore!

OP posts:
Horsemad · 24/10/2018 16:46

I wonder if that was at Raine's request or at somebody's instigation?

DontCallMeCharlotte · 24/10/2018 16:51

PawneeParksDept

See, I loved Max's pink dress today, although I would have preferred a different hat.

She always looks so happy and animated. I bet she even smiles in her sleep.

LimpyLampy · 24/10/2018 16:55

I don’t suppose anyone would be enthusiastic to attend a psychiatrist if the man who contributed most to her mental health unbalance was the person insisting she went!

At least Kate has what seems a supportive family background behind her (though like every family I’m sure there are issues there too). I suppose though it isn’t the issues that are the problem, it’s the way they are dealt with. Megan and Harry will both flounder though they have Doria. It is odd that Harry remarked that at least now Megan has a new family or words to that effect. Maybe Harry is perfectly content with his family, he seems a bit happy go lucky so might not have felt the weight of his parent’s history as much as William did. What could be a big problem for Megan and Harry is how little time they knew each other and they were even apart for much of that. Added to that the stress of marrying into the RF. But I am saying this from a cynical viewpoint given the recent posts about Diana.

QueenOfTheAndals · 24/10/2018 16:59

I think Meghan is older and far more grounded than Diana was. Diana had led an incredibly sheltered life when she married - she basically went from the school room to being the Princess of Wales - whereas Meghan went to university, had a career and did charity work too. I don't think the comparisons are valid ones.

Moononthehill28 · 24/10/2018 17:01

Strange to think that Meghan and Kate are around the same age Diana was when she died.

Laiste · 24/10/2018 17:05

I've read that Diana only met Charles 11 times before their wedding. Of all the statistics and facts flying around that is the one which strikes me. 3 of my 4 daughters are past the age of 19 and i wouldn't be happy about them marrying anyone they'd only met a handful of times!

I've yet to see a tiara i didn't like.

Lots of lovely's here. The Lotus flower one is gorgeous.

QueenOfTheAndals · 24/10/2018 17:06

@Moononthehill28 They're actually both OLDER than Diana was when she died. If she was still alive she wouldn't even be 60 yet. Isn't that crazy?

OP posts:
SemperIdem · 24/10/2018 17:07

It has been generally acknowledged that Diana could be quite a difficult person, prone to making some dodgy decisions, I thought?

I suspect she would have been the MIL from Hell.

Laiste · 24/10/2018 17:09

Just reading my own link properly and i see that at 2 of those tiaras are from the 16th and the 17th century! Most are 100 years old+.

Worth a fortune and true antiques. I'd be terrified of throwing my head back to laugh and it flying off!

YearOfYouRemember · 24/10/2018 17:14

I love all these threads and Max's Tiara was stunning.

I hope Meghan is okay. Harry must be worried.

Clionba · 24/10/2018 17:40

The Cambridge Lover's Knot tiara, wasn't Diana's. She wore it, on loan from the Queen. The Queen
