I hardly think Kate would be regent; she's only royal by marriage.Where's David Starkey when you need him?

eddiemairswife · 26/10/2018 19:08

Sorry that should be David Starkey.

SenecaFalls · 26/10/2018 19:08

For Kate to be regent, the Regency Act of 1937 would have to be amended because she would not be the next person in the line of succession over 21. There is precedent, though. The Act was amended to make the DofE eligible to be regent during the minority of Charles. Otherwise the designated regent would have been Princess Margaret.

QueenOfTheAndals · 26/10/2018 19:16

There have been cases of queens being regents for child monarchs but possibly not in the U.K.

Mary of Guise (Queen Consort of James V) was regent for her daughter Mary Queen of Scots.

TipseyTorvey · 26/10/2018 19:20

@BigGreenOlives Am totally with you!!! Would love that dress just to stroke and pretend I had a life that would allow me to wear it :-). Nearly 50 though so....ha ha not so much.

SenecaFalls · 26/10/2018 19:20

And in England, Margaret Beaufort was regent for Henry VIII, but she was not a queen.

QueenOfTheAndals · 26/10/2018 19:21

Oh yes, I forgot about the Scottish monarchs. The Stuarts were unfortunate to have a string of child monarchs, the last couple being babies in arms.

A few medieval queens of England also served as regents, but when the kings were away rather than because the kings were children.

Also, there were situations where women were named regent while the king was out of the country. One was Katherine of Aragon for Henry VIII.

SenecaFalls · 26/10/2018 19:30

In Scotland, Margaret Tudor, Queen Consort of James IV and sister of Henry VIII, was regent during the minority of her son James V.

Haworthia · 26/10/2018 19:33

Joining this thread because I love reading about royal jewels and tiaras. I discovered the Order of Splendor blog via Twitter recently (there was a great blog about the Queen and “brooch warfare” Grin) and I’ve been fascinated ever since.

SenecaFalls · 26/10/2018 19:37

Also Katherine Parr for Henry VIII while he was out of the country. So Henry had three women regents: his grandmother during his short minority and two of his queens while he was waging war on his neighbors out of the country.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 26/10/2018 19:42

Returning back to the bling, this is quite fascinating seeing HMs jewels worn by younger royals

I would love to know how it is all catalogued.
Is there a big leather bound book of Granny's Jewels?

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 26/10/2018 19:43

@Haworthia

Please link to “brooch warfare

Must be up there with Tiara Thursdays

Paradyning · 26/10/2018 19:43

Was that the one about the Trump visit Haworthia?

Clionba · 26/10/2018 19:44

Yes! Angela Kelly, HM's dresser, keeps it. It's a big book and she signs items in and out.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 26/10/2018 19:46

How do you know that ? @Clionba

QueenOfTheAndals · 26/10/2018 19:50

Great Hello link @CurlyWurlyTwirly though for some reason the story was interspersed with ads for black pudding!

OP posts:
Clionba · 26/10/2018 19:50

It was in one of those books - maybe the Fergie one? Or possibly the Diamond Queen one by Andrew Marr? I've read that many of them, I'm a font of useless information Grin!

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 26/10/2018 20:00

i can only describe this as Tiara Porn

Haworthia · 26/10/2018 20:01

Yes, the Trump visit Paradyning Smile

CurlyWurlyTwirly Sadly I can’t find the link. I think it was a Twitter thread that the author has deleted for some reason. It was so detailed!

Here’s an article based on the Twitter thread: www.vox.com/2018/7/19/17586942/queen-elizabeth-brooch-warfare-trump-obama-code

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 26/10/2018 20:01

I love a royal related book @Clionba
Do you have a few recommendations?

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 26/10/2018 20:03
