Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14 Thread 15 Thread 16

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Most of us had long since stopped using it, partially due to the inconsistency of formulations and the worrying behaviour of the CEO on Social Media.

Since that compilation, other brands like the Inkey, Revolution Skincare, QRXLabs, and Alex Steinherr x Primark have launched with similar products/concepts.

From the limited experience on here, the Vitamin C 23% and Azelaic Acid from Garden of Wisdom (at Victoria’s Health) is well liked and much preferred over TO versions.

OCTOBER 2018: In other news, we’re two years old this month! We’re so old- Drunk Elephant is finally available in the UK, but all this celebration is probably overshadowed by the fear that our beloved LRP Toleriane Fluide may have been discontinued Sad

joz thanks for the cicaplast hand cream recommendation ..have terrible red patches on my hands which I have having to use hydrocortisone on. This sounds with a try.
Got a sample of the EveLom gel cleanser recently and I love it. It's very expensive so doubt that I would purchase it but it's very gentle but removes all makeup ( I use micellar water to remove eye make up) and skin feels very clean and moisturised afterwards .

mintmagnummm · 08/01/2019 11:41

Really random question but what washing powder/liquid do all of you use and what fabric softener?

Connie5858 · 08/01/2019 13:46

MInt
I have very reactive skin
And now so has my husband
After using aerial for years we have changed
For one month we used Ecocer. But I have been reading lots about Surcare.
Surcare is used by lots of mothers with children with problem skin.
I always wash my Muslim cloths and towels
Once with washing powder
Then again on a second wash with nothing just to get everything out. The same with bedding.

EnidButton · 08/01/2019 18:26

For towels, flannels and pillowcases I use Ecover zero usually but just got done Surcare which seems good so far.
Fairy non-bio and comfort conditioner for everything else. Not keen on strong smelling stuff so it's the white comfort. Bit of a scent but it's gentle.

JDSTER · 08/01/2019 18:55

Not too bothered about eco washing powder/liquid. Prefer Persil but I do use ecover fabric softener, thinking at least in that final rinse, it’s a non chemical one.

JDSTER · 08/01/2019 19:00

Anyone who likes GOW Vit C, it has £3 off, so £7, on VH.
I ordered some other stuff today so decided to try it. I’ll use it once I’m finished current DE. A chance to try and compare, if nothing else.

Tsmummy08 · 08/01/2019 20:08

mint I use supermarket own brand washing liquid (or Persil), but no fabric softener - my mum didn't use it when we were growing up, so I didn't bother either. I've tried it a few times but haven't noticed much difference... basic AF :)

EnidButton · 08/01/2019 21:19

I just switched to a non scented no bleach eco powder to see if it helped my spots and I think it does. No dc though so that might influence what people choose. Not sure ecover etc is very good on actual marks and stains.

I'm getting 2 new spots a day, I've also been stuck in bed with me/cfs/fibro flare up. The suspect meal did have wheat in it. Quite a lot. She didn't think it would count as it was wheat not flour. I suppose now I have visual evidence that I am intolerant of it and not just the invisible symptoms. Just frustrating when I'd been a whole 12 months including Xmas gluten free. Anyway, start again...🙄

mintmagnummm · 08/01/2019 21:37

Thanks ladies. I tried ecover conditioner, both the pink top and yellow top but didn't like either of them! I'm a believer in using bio washing stuff so I stick with Ariel. Just need to find a softener I like.

Hope u feel better Enid 💐

EnidButton · 08/01/2019 22:23

Thank you Mint Quietly seething about it but that won't help.😠🙄

EnidButton · 08/01/2019 22:24

Mint It's Ecover or Surcare powder I use, with no conditioner. White (as in colour not scent) Comfort might be worth a sniff? It's subtle.

mintmagnummm · 09/01/2019 05:50

I can't use comfort, even the white one which I LOVE the smell of! It makes us all itch here :-(

BabyPigeon83 · 09/01/2019 11:02

I use the Ariel pods (love the smell and the convenience) and the white comfort ( I think it's called pure) because I love the smell.

SallieSallow · 09/01/2019 19:03

Persil here with either the pure/white comfort, dettol laundry stuff or nothing at all to follow depending on what’s being washed. I’ve had itching and rashes from Bold and some of the supermarket own brands before so prefer to stick with what I know I’m ok with.

Hope you feel better soon Enid Flowers

JDSTER · 09/01/2019 22:21

Flowers Enid. Hope you start to improve soon

EnidButton · 10/01/2019 00:56

JD Sallie Thank you Brew Smile Had a better day today.

I've lost 4lbs so just another 3 or 4 to go. Then I'll be able to go on car journeys without undoing my jeans. GrinBlush I'll just keep half an eye on it after that.

Tsmummy08 · 10/01/2019 09:26

Mint Have you tried Ecover conditioner? Might be worth a go...

Enid Hope you feel better soon - it's frustrating isn't it when people don't take food intolerances seriously, even when they have a direct impact on your health... Flowers

Tsmummy08 · 10/01/2019 09:28

Sorry Mint. ignore that!

Skinsosoftandblemishfree · 10/01/2019 13:47

A question for the experts: the info sent with my P50W says not to use retinol products with it. I assume this to be only at the time of application ie I can use P50W at night and apply a retinol in the morning? I will be using the Redermic R 0.3% retinol so very mild.

botemp · 10/01/2019 14:02

Yes, not in the same routine although you could with a wait time but I don't recommend it, Skin.

Thank you Bo.

SallieSallow · 10/01/2019 19:40

Glad you’re feeling a bit better Enid

I’m down with the lurgy, so far it’s just uncomfortable/irritating rather than feeling like death warmed up so I’m just hoping it doesn’t get any worse.

Escentual have got 1/3 off French farmacy if anyone needs anything, though doesn’t include Bioderma for some reason. They also have 20% off using ESCENTUAL20 but you can’t combine the two.

TantricTwist · 10/01/2019 20:03

My DM and I both came up in a rash to Ariel around 20 years ago but they must have changed the formula because I now use it all the time after trying it again a few years ago. It's the only powder I've found that cleans my whites best and no rash these days.

I didn't use softener for years but have started to use it again and I just love Lenor the yellow one. I did try comfort but the smell doesn't last nearly as long.

Pupsiecola · 10/01/2019 20:17

I used Waitrose own brand scent-free detergent for many years, and the white Lenor. I get quite bad eczema from most detergents I've tried. I think I mentioned waaay back that I can get it on my hips from hotel bedding. BUT, in an attempt to reduce our food bill, which is shockingingly high, I have switched to Aldi for some household goods, and touch wood, their scented laundy detergent has no such effect. It's been a month now and not a rash in sight (notwithstanding the hand rash from the Clarins handcream which is fading but still there).

mintmagnummm · 10/01/2019 20:23

I also feel like I'm getting the lurgy! Ache all over, feel drained and a bit shivery 😫.

We all have sensitive skin in my house, but all of us seem ok with Ariel touch wood! Just trialling the gold orchid lenor which smells quite subtle so fingers crossed!
