Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14 Thread 15 Thread 16

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

WRT to The Ordinary/Deciem:

Most of us had long since stopped using it, partially due to the inconsistency of formulations and the worrying behaviour of the CEO on Social Media.

Since that compilation, other brands like the Inkey, Revolution Skincare, QRXLabs, and Alex Steinherr x Primark have launched with similar products/concepts.

From the limited experience on here, the Vitamin C 23% and Azelaic Acid from Garden of Wisdom (at Victoria’s Health) is well liked and much preferred over TO versions.

OCTOBER 2018: In other news, we’re two years old this month! We’re so old- Drunk Elephant is finally available in the UK, but all this celebration is probably overshadowed by the fear that our beloved LRP Toleriane Fluide may have been discontinued Sad

Koko
Olay 7 effects sensitive has some high concentration niacinamide products and all contain glycerin.
They look like moisturiser but are more like serum and do have a brightening effect.
I tend to use in the morning.

botemp · 27/11/2018 19:25

mini, do you wear makeup and a somewhat heavy sunscreen?

Sorry, the DHC offer was on since Friday but I only saw it yesterday (bought myself the DHC from look fantastic for a similar price on Friday already). However, on the DHC UK site they are offering a site wide 25% off and they're donating £5 for every cleansing oil sold to Oasis for Girls non-profit today (Tuesday, think the 25% offer is on longer). So almost like 50% off except some of it goes to charity.

JDSTER · 27/11/2018 19:25

Not to labour the pointGrin, but this is how much DHC I have left (and whyAngryat missing 50% discount)

Sallie let me know how you get on with that simple cleansing oil please!

SallieSallow · 27/11/2018 19:39

Will do Mint I’m finishing off some hylamide oil cleanser that I had in my stash and I’ve got a fair bit to go yet but will shout out when I try the simple.

Off for a nosey at the DHC site as I could do with some new mascara.

Minimammoth · 27/11/2018 19:55

Hi botemp I usually try to go for a sunfactor in the moisturiser, I have Vitiligo so no pigment, in hot sun I use a high factor 50+. Don’t wear make up everyday, I have Clarins BB cream and a Lancôme foundation. The REN moisturiser suits me, but expensive. Also it seems that most products formulated for older skin are mega£££

botemp · 27/11/2018 20:02

Mini, I always advocate standalone sunscreen, a moisturiser with SPF will never cover you adequately. It becomes even more imperative if you're using a Retinol. Beyond that, with Vitiligo I'd assume it's even more important to use a sunscreen with a high UVA rating daily which will never be the case with a SPF in moisturiser.

Minimammoth · 27/11/2018 20:05

Thanks bo I have a clarins factor 50 v.light lotion that I can use. The BB has a factor 15.
Am using a M&S moisturise which I don’t like at all. Too heavy,

Minimammoth · 27/11/2018 20:57

Scrub that, I think it’s a SPF 30.

dont use the gift15 code because you automatically get 25% off and the freebie

SallieSallow · 29/11/2018 19:00

DHC have got 25% off on their website for new customers using the code WELCOME - but the postage is £4.50 unless you order £40 worth of stuff. I only want a mascara so will probably just get it from amazon as LF don’t have a discount on it.

My P&M retinol oil has arrived, quite excited to try it Grin For those who use it - did you build up slowly like with other ret or tret products or use every night from the start?

Ollivander84 · 29/11/2018 20:15

TK Maxx is FULL of ABH and becca makeup Blush

botemp · 29/11/2018 21:11

My TKMaxx has been getting loads of highly coveted makeup in, loads of By Terry, Huda Beauty, Tom Ford (nearly bought an eye quad before remembering I never wear eye shadow), ABH, Tarte, Chanel, Nars, Stila, Kevyn Aucoin, Too Faced, and quite a bit of YSL.

Mini, if you want something light to wear under SPF I'd suggest the LRP Toleriane sensitive, but I tend to skip moisturiser most of the time as the SPF on its own is usually enough.

OP posts:
Ollivander84 · 29/11/2018 21:18

I got the becca prime and glow set (under eye concealer, highlighter and primer), an ABH eyeshadow, ABH liquid lipstick and it was £40

Just done the most amazing photo shoot with a huge floral headdress Grin

SallieSallow · 29/11/2018 21:24

I should really try and force myself into a tkmaxx but the ones near me stress me out - not sure if it’s the lights or the layout or both, but I always feel claustrophobic and panicky and have to leave. There’s a small homesense I can cope with but the beauty section isn’t very big. Mind you I absolutely do not need any more makeup & should really be purging some of my current collection so I’m probably best off steering clear.

Another thread on here has reminded me that I own one of those facial toning gizmos, thinking of digging it out (if I can find it Blush) as posters on that thread are saying it works for sagging. I only used it for a few weeks before I got bored & then forgot about it but wonder if I might see some results with long term consistent use.

TantricTwist · 30/11/2018 00:36

sallie I used to get very stressed and claustrophobic at those kind of chaotic places too but I'm fine with them now having been dragged in countless times by DD to TKMAxx. I quite like mooching around it now. I think it's the randomness and eclectic bizarre mix of stuff everywhere that would stress me out but now I know how each section is divided up I can cope with it. Wierd isn't it getting stressed out by the layout of shops.

Bizarely though I find my local large newish Waitrose ever so soothing to walk around, I always feel very calm and happy because of it's layout and staff. All the cute christmas items in there the other day just made me break out into a huge smile. I always leave feeling like I've been in a spa or something, wierd I know Grin

JDSTER · 30/11/2018 07:55

I’m going RL shopping today so I might try TKMax. I don’t particularly enjoy the experience either. Weirdly DH who does t shop that much, always makes a beeline for TK.

I know what you mean about Waitrose Tant. There’s a small one near school where I frequent and the staff are delightful. I always enjoy my free coffee too Smile (reminds me to take me reusable cup this morning)

SallieSallow · 30/11/2018 18:29

I have got so weird about in person shopping, I’m fine with pretty much any and all supermarkets as long as not too humongous, but get really stressed and panicky in clothes shops, department stores or indoor shopping centres. Some places are worse than others, Tant I think it is the randomness of TKmaxx that unsettles me, but in some shops it’s the lighting that does it.

I stick to small high street stores that I can easily escape from if I need to, otherwise it’s online all the way. I never used to be like this so presume it’s an age thing - though there wasn’t an alternative to in person shopping when I was younger - apart from the likes of the Littlewoods catalogue Grin

ChesterBelloc · 01/12/2018 16:15

Hello again (long-time lurker, v occasional poster) - quick query: my DH is about to go to the US for a week; is there anything I should ask him to get me whilst there?

bo kindly recommended I try CeraVe PM a while back, so I got him to bring me two small bottles on his last trip, still have plenty left.

I have fairly normal skin, current routine is

AM: Superdrug Hot Cloth Cleanser
>> wouldn't mind a rosewater/glycerine toner in here...?

JDSTER · 01/12/2018 16:39

Hi chester If you like niacinamide (active ingredient in the cerave pm) you might like LRP double repair moisturiser, which also contains ceramides. It’s not available in UK yet. I really like it. I also rate LRP toleriane hydrating gentle cleanser, which would be good for you as a morning cleanse, rather than a hot cloth cleanser, which isn’t really needed when you’re not wearing makeup. I’ve attached photos, for ease.

Someone posted a Hyaluronic Acid Serum from CeraVe which isn't in the UK. She said it was a nice texture - you might fancy trying as you like/use Hada Labo. In the pic on left, blue/white box.

BagelGoesWalking · 01/12/2018 18:26

Also, just remembered as I pressed Post - more expensive but Jordan Samuel. People rave about their cleansers, Retinol oil and serum. They have holiday sets at the moment.

botemp · 01/12/2018 18:34

Chester, I'm supposing next step would be a Retinoid considering your concern of wrinkles/sun damage and possibly a Vitamin C but I'd just buy that here. You could consider asking for some Differin which is available there as a consumer product but it's more an acne medication with potential to be anti-ageing but not backed like tretinoin for the anti-ageing. So in that sense, it's probably better to look at a service like Dermatica (or if you have access to a regular dermatologist) for access to tretinoin/Retin-A.

Amlactin body lotion may be of interest if you have KP. Paula's Choice has a weekly high % BHA foam product, a bit like a mask, it's 4% I think and part of the Resist lineup.
