Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14 Thread 15 Thread 16

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

WRT to The Ordinary/Deciem:

Most of us had long since stopped using it, partially due to the inconsistency of formulations and the worrying behaviour of the CEO on Social Media.

Since that compilation, other brands like the Inkey, Revolution Skincare, QRXLabs, and Alex Steinherr x Primark have launched with similar products/concepts.

From the limited experience on here, the Vitamin C 23% and Azelaic Acid from Garden of Wisdom (at Victoria’s Health) is well liked and much preferred over TO versions.

OCTOBER 2018: In other news, we’re two years old this month! We’re so old- Drunk Elephant is finally available in the UK, but all this celebration is probably overshadowed by the fear that our beloved LRP Toleriane Fluide may have been discontinued Sad

I ordered a dot for my son, it's not expected until January though which is fine as his birthday is in Jan.

Been using the sample of medik8 hydr8 b5 and at first I thought it was going to be a keeper, however my skin started to break out and feel tighter which has happened with every ha product I've tried so far!

NiceUnusualDifferent · 24/11/2018 18:36

Dr Sams moisturiser has launched, 5% niacinamide but also cyclopentasiloxine or however it’s spelled plus shea butter. Quite disappointed...

botemp · 24/11/2018 18:51

£25 and several silicones Shock I thought the cleanser was reasonably priced but that seems a lot for not very expensive ingredients. Cerave PM (and the UK equivalent) still a better choice as it's also 4-5% Nia and you also get the added benefit of ceramides and fatty lipids in the ideal composition.

Pupsiecola · 24/11/2018 19:17

I found Dr Sam's IG this week pretty pretentious: lots of "don't go out on Saturday night. Put 6pm You Tube in your calendar. I have exciting news" type stuff.

botemp · 24/11/2018 19:28

It's a bit standard influencer marketing, isn't it? A bit dated at that and it risks alienating the audience. It's a shame, she'd be better off following the Glossier model that has a real discourse/collaboration with the audience/potential customers in creating products. So far the Dr. Sam brand feels very top down, ignoring a quite lucrative audience that struggle with ingredients that are non comodonogenic like shea, silicones, etc.

Thanks everyone for ‘dot’ explanations and Tant, also for your routine update. Always interesting to read and good to see that some of us ‘old timers’ have found a routine that’s working and we’re sticking to. I’ll try and post an updated routine soon

JDSTER · 24/11/2018 19:38

What I actually came onto share was
‘Look fantastic’ have 33% off LRP and use code LFBF10 for an extra 10% as well. Best deal I’ve seen I think Smile

I shall be giving the Dr Sam moisturiser a miss I think Hmm

Pupsiecola · 24/11/2018 19:51

I agree Bo. I just feel it's not very Harley Street Doctor-ish.

botemp · 24/11/2018 19:58

It feels very Harley Street doctorish to me actually, Pupsie. Not necessarily in a positive way, it just feels very traditional 'doctor knows best' listen to me, etc. It also echoes somewhat the dissapointed experience shared here a few months back.

I've ordered some LRP backups with that code as well JDSTER but it only works if you click through from the email. I also bought some DHC cleansing oil backups on Friday.

Biologifemini · 24/11/2018 22:02

Agree the dr Sam
Moisturiser is oddly basic and you can get cheaper elsewhere. Olay do lots of high concentration niacinamide and glycerin for much less.
The silicone use is nice for make up but odd for a moisturiser.
So much Shea butter can be quite por clogging.

BagelGoesWalking · 24/11/2018 23:42

Quite a few in FB groups have mentioned the Shea butter already. It does seem an unusual choice as she deals with acne issues probably 90% of the time. You'd assume she would know that shea isn't a popular ingredient. I wonder if formulation and production was rushed due to the success of the cleanser? Is it £25 for 50ml? It doesn't actually say in her website listing.

EnidButton · 24/11/2018 23:54

Shea butter is the worst for my skin as far as acne goes but it has an instant effect so I can't help thinkingbtgats what she's going for. People with well behaved 'normal' skin who want to feel like they're doing something and only really need it to feel smooth and moisturised to the touch. If I put a Shea butter product on my face right now it'd look glowing, pillowy and soft but as I'm acne prone, in two days it'd be a heavy, clogged, spotty mess.

Not entirely sure where I was going with that.🤔 My mind wandered. Basically it seems like a shallow money maker.

mintmagnummm · 25/11/2018 06:36

I'm acne prone but my skin likes Shea butter, so interesting how skins differ from one another isn't it! My skin seems to dislike any acid/retinol/hyaluronic/fragrance

TantricTwist · 25/11/2018 13:26

My skin is not a fan of Shea Butter or niacinamide, there is nothing about Dr Sam's moisturiser that draws me to it, it does seem to be aimed towards those with normal skin or dry skin issues.

JDSTER · 25/11/2018 15:47

I’ve just ordered the new LRP toleriane moisturiser on look fantastic with33% off plus an extra 15% today which took it down from £16 to £9.01! I know Enid has been impressed with it, following the demise of the original toleriane.

mintmagnummm · 25/11/2018 21:58

Has anywhere got any good offers on French skincare at mo? I need to repurchase my avene cleanser, Vichy water spray and bioderma micellar.

This is the Cerave Koko

www.cerave.co.uk/our-products/moisturisers/facial-moisturising-lotion

I'd have to look up the Play ones, but generally anything they have with niacinamide in it is 3-5% and just look for the unfragranced ones. I think the serums have the higher end of the percentage.

OP posts:
botemp · 26/11/2018 10:25

Also, GSA: DHC cleansing oil (200ml) is on 50% off offer at Escentual today.

OP posts:
NiceUnusualDifferent · 26/11/2018 19:46

I ordered the DHC on Saturday and it arrived this morning!

Minimammoth · 27/11/2018 16:15

Any recommendations for older skin( 60s), I have LRP retinoid , which I use at night, but need a daytime moisturiser. Skin is not particularly dry, or oily.

JDSTER · 27/11/2018 17:00

Missed that offer of 50% off DHC cleansing oil Angry

NeurotrashWarrior · 27/11/2018 17:09

Hi I bought that cerave one on boots online today; 25% off I think.

SallieSallow · 27/11/2018 19:02

I missed the DHC oil too Angry I do have a simple one to try though which was cheap as chips in Superdrug so if I like it/no reactions etc I’ll stick with it.

I’ve ordered some cerave from boots though, thank you for that Neuro as it’s been out of stock on their website for ages.
