Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14 Thread 15 Thread 16

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

OCTOBER 2018: In other news, we’re two years old this month! We’re so old- Drunk Elephant is finally available in the UK, but all this celebration is probably overshadowed by the fear that our beloved LRP Toleriane Fluide may have been discontinued Sad

Thanks BabyP that's a very long and eclectic collection of products

JDSTER · 18/11/2018 22:29

Thanks babypigeon for the list. I too have only one product the ‘anti-ageing’ Hmm product - Medik 8 crystal retinal which I really like.

TantricTwist · 18/11/2018 22:57

BabyP I have only ever used La Roche-Posay Effaclar Duo which was at the start of my skin care journey and recommended on MN and by A Model Recommends.

It's been an amazing journey of discovery actually, I never realised skin care products actually worked, but I guess you just get to a certain age where you need them.

Before that it was just moisturiser with spf, foundation with spf and simple face wash or face wipes Shock on a daily basis. Fortunately the spf laden products did actually manage to save my skin from wrinkles thus far.

TantricTwist · 18/11/2018 22:57
  • from your list I mean (the LRP)
mintmagnummm · 19/11/2018 06:06

Babyp how did I miss that list?! Thank u for writing that all out bless you it must have taken ages! I love reading things like that, although I hardly ever agree with their choices 🙄

BabyPigeon83 · 19/11/2018 07:08

Oh I just noticed it yesterday even if I had the magazine for weeks and I thought it would be fun for us to talk about the products. They are supposed to be the best of the best, right ? 😁
I was very surprised about their perfume choice, Joy, I personally think it's very disappointing, especially for a Dior. Yes, it is not sweet like the ongoing trend, but it's not great either.
I will try that niche brand they rated, especially since they sell travel sizes.
I forgot that I have the revolution concealer and It's not so great for me, I had to get a lighter shade because it oxidises on me. At least it's cheap.
Other interesting things for me I would try: Estée Lauder liquid lipstick, lancome mascara, maybe lipstick queen since I never tried it, the nude blush from bareminerals (love avoiding looking like a clown 😁) . Maybe black Friday will bring some good sales.
Totally off topic, what do you think of the pixiglow exfoliant dupe that Aldi is selling? Caroline Hirrons was less than impressed about the blatant copy of the packaging. And she said the formula has very little in common (unsurprisingly). I think they were already copying other packaging for ages, for other products like shampoo and showergel and it seems to be legally ok but it is morally questionable.

BabyPigeon83 · 19/11/2018 07:26

And the YSL perfume, they reused the touche eclat packaging, what an innovation! I'm sure it's worth 2 ml for £29. 🙄

TantricTwist · 19/11/2018 09:10

I think the dupes will always sell to those not doing their research into the products they buy so not really aware of the complete and utter difference in ingredients.

Plus if they actually didn't buy dupes and spent their money on the real deal their skin would look better and therefore would spend less money in the long run due to skin improvement.
Hence these wonderful threads to help us choose wisely with Bo being instrumental in keeping us looking younger and for longer.
I sometimes tell people I'm 10 years younger than I am and even then they don't believe I'm that old Grin

Pupsiecola · 19/11/2018 09:16

I have one of the Lipstick Queen nudes Baby. Bought it about 3 months ago after reading a Sali Hughes piece. I love it. I don't like the packaging; it's really uninspired. But the lipstick is a good nude for me, and it's creamy and moisturising:-

www.theguardian.com/fashion/2017/aug/05/beauty-nude-lipstick-makeup-sali-hughes

From that list I use Pureology Hydrate shampoo and conditioner: not tried the mask but may be a sub for Elasticizer.

Garnier Micellar water for eye make up removal.

I have that Soaper Duper body scrub but haven't used it yet. Will dig it out!

I do use a BM blush, but not the one listed. I really like it and it's the first time in my life that I've consistently used blusher (a good angled brush has helped enormously: also BM)

I've used Benefit Gimme Brow before, but I just cannot buy that packaing. It's hideous imo.

The rest of the family use OGX shampoo. Usually whichever is on offer but I will look out for that one.

Which niche brand do you mean Baby?

TantricTwist · 19/11/2018 09:20

Ps for anyone interested I bought Rimmel Match Perfection foundation with the blue top on a whim (based on comments on MN threads) and it is rather brilliant. I bought it online and luckily its a great colour match, true ivory. I also got their stay matte powder as part of a free gift which is a keeper esp now that my current Vichy loose powder is on its last legs.

mumno11 · 19/11/2018 09:20

Hello everyone. I'm seeking advice from all you fabulous ladies. I've read thread one and two and was looking to order things suggested but jumped on the latest thread just to see what's the latest and realized there have been few changes.
Please can I pick your brains before embarking on the journey of good skincare routine!
I have a very small routine of exfoliating and moisturizing in the morning and always thought less is more .
Over the weekend I dug out liquid gold (alpha) from last years M & S advent and tried it instead of the exfoliating and could tell the difference on my skin. It felt smoother.
From what I understood from reading the threads is I need vitamin c serum and retinoids and a spf and definitely and pm routine!
Any suggestions of good products are welcome.
I don't apply any makeup on a daily basis only limited to when going out.

Skin type: dry skin all over*

Approx age (range):* 44

Primary skin concern:dryness*

Routine :*

AM :exfoliating scrub(sanctuary) and sanctuary moisturizer * which has spf 15

TantricTwist You are right, I think most ppl do not read the back of the packaging, they believe the claims written on the front label. I was guilty of that too.
TantricTwist I used to use an older version of effaclar the first one that was released years ago. It did help but also iritated my skin at the same time. It's true that SPF alone is good for protecting the skin from premature signs on aging.

Pupsiecola I will have a look to see if I can get a lipstick queen lipstick on sale to try it. I also noticed on the list pillow talk from Charlotte Tilbury, and I want to mention that I have a dupe for that, from urban decay, a vice lipstick in shade ravenswood , it's not matte, it's creamy so it's good for dry lips, and the colour is very flattering.
Have you tried the Mac mineralise blush? It's sheer/buildable with a soft look.
I was talking about floral street perfumes
floralstreet.com

Also I received email from lookfanstatic, they have 33% off la roche posay, vichy and cerave today as a black Friday pre sale.

Tsmummy08 · 19/11/2018 21:05

Did anyone else partake of the Beauty Bay 30% sale? I went a bit mad with Dose of Colors liquid lipsticks as they're one of the few formulas I don't find too drying and the colours look great, plus a few other bits: ABH Brow Wiz and Sugarpill Trinket.

Skincare: I've ditched my tret and am loving P&M Retinoil... I've lost the pinkness of skin tone that I'd had for a while and it seems to suit me at the moment. I'll try tret again in the New Year, possibly buffering it with a little moisturiser.

I've also switched from BR P50W (which is supposed to be a gentle version) to P50V (for ageing skins) and I have to say I really prefer the V. The W stung every bloody time I used it, even after weeks of use - the V feels much less stingy and irritating, but that could be because I'm not using tret? Not sure, although I wasn't using tret over the summer...

Has anyone else used the different varieties of P50 and have a favourite?

Tsmummy08 · 19/11/2018 21:17

I've not used any of those top 50 products (!), so I'm not much help! Wouldn't mind trying the Neutrogena eye cream though....

EnidButton · 19/11/2018 21:22

Typical that I bought some lrp from LF this week! Should've waited. Put a new lipstick in with my order. Mac lustre lipstick in Syrup. Not seen it in real life so hopefully it's nice on me.

Love the list! Going to catch up with it now.

I wasn't keen on Dior Joy either. It's nice but not much to it and feels like it should've been a Summer perfume.

EnidButton · 19/11/2018 21:32

The facial oil on the list looks interesting. My skin was lovely and glowy when I used an oil. (balance me radiance facial oil) Unfortunately it also gave me spots. 😬 But the ingredients in the Orchid Oil there look good.

SallieSallow · 19/11/2018 22:01

Thank you for typing that out Babypigeon though I’m another that’s not tried anything on the list.

I’ve just ordered the IT cosmetics oil free/matte cc cream as there was 25% off for Black Friday.

Tsmummy I’m very, very tempted by the pestle and mortar retinol oil, as I really hate the peeling (albeit very mild in my case) from tret. I know I’m a wuss and should power through but I hate the way makeup clings to flakey patches. I’ll keep an eye on LF and see if they offer any Black Friday discounts on it.

SallieSallow · 19/11/2018 22:08

Oh I tell a lie, I have used Garnier micellar water, it was very, very eye stingy for me and made my whole face itchy.

BabyPigeon83 · 19/11/2018 22:13

Tsmummy08 I did! 😁 I got some Anastasia tweezers, a beauty blender pro and two jefree star lip products : the liquid lipstick in shade "thick as thieves", and a lip ammunition lipstick in a cold red called "redrum". I haven't tried anything from jefree so I was very curious, but I have nothing to say on these because I just got them today.

mumno11 I don't have very dry skin, I hope someone more knowledgeable could offer some help.
Is that a type of scrub/physical exfoliant you are using every morning ? In that case, replace it with a gentle cleanser and an acid exfoliant because the physical one is not good for skin.
Have a look on the Paula's choice website, they have a black Friday offer.
A good cleanser suited for dry skin is this one :
www.paulaschoice.co.uk/skin-recovery-softening-cream-cleanser-full-size-1050.html

This is another one ( I use this one myself, it's very gentle)
www.paulaschoice.co.uk/resist-anti-aging-optimal-results-hydrating-cleanser-m7600.html?dwvar_m7600_size=fullsize&cgid=

This exfoliant is suited for dry skin :
www.paulaschoice.co.uk/resist-anti-aging-daily-smoothing-treatment-aha-m7660.html?dwvar_m7660_size=fullsize&cgid=

Night time moisturizer for dry skin ( my friend with dry skin loves this, I had a sample but it's too moisturising for my combo skin)
www.paulaschoice.co.uk/resist-anti-aging-intensive-repair-cream-m7810.html?dwvar_m7810_size=fullsize&cgid=

Also, SPF 15 is not enough when using an acid:

www.paulaschoice.co.uk/resist-anti-aging-skin-restoring-moisturizer-m7970.html?dwvar_m7970_size=fullsize&cgid=

If you prefer mineral sunscreen filters, they have an option for that
www.paulaschoice.co.uk/skin-recovery-daily-moisturizing-lotion-broad-spectrum-spf-30-m1460.html?dwvar_m1460_size=fullsize

If you check the website, the skin recovery range (white and red packaging) is meant for dryier skin. The dark blue resist range is also suitable for dryer skin but has a boost of anti aging ingredients. It can be confusing because they have so many products but they also sale travel sizes for many of them and also samples.

SallieSallow · 19/11/2018 22:20

Mumno11 I’d go up to Bo’s first post on the thread and read the clicky links ‘’Where to start” and ‘’skin types v skin conditions”. I definitely wouldn’t recommend adding liquid gold (AHA) retinol and Vit c all at once especially as you have dry skin.

I’d ditch the scrub and before you add anything else get a decent spf in place, it should be spf 30 at least but ideally 50 if you’re going to be using liquid gold. Have a read of Bo’s “do I need to wear a sunscreen every day of the year” link too - but basically the answer is yes you do Smile

If you don’t wear makeup I’d focus on a gentle cleanser for night time (La Roche Posay toleriane hydrating is a good one) and you can probably get away with just tepid water in the morning as your skin’s dry. Then find a basic gentle non-scented moisturiser to use night and morning (I like cerave PM, but eucerin 5% and la Roche posay toleriane sensitive fluids are popular on here too). Once you’ve got your SPF sorted then you can add in your liquid gold at night - but start slowly (once a week at first) and build it up.

Leave retinol and Vit c for now, you can add them (one at a time and gradually!) later, but I’d just get the basics sorted for now.

SallieSallow · 19/11/2018 22:22

Cross post with Babypigeon but notice we’re on the same page with the SPF Grin

Pupsiecola · 19/11/2018 22:26

I love the P&M Retinol Oil too. It's lasting ages. I use it every other night with the Verso Eye Serum. How often are you using it TS? I did think about changing to sth stronger but will probably stick with the P&M.

I'm really liking my new products. DE Protini, DE Marula Oil and the PC Age Resist Acid Toner.

SheStoodInTheStorm · 19/11/2018 22:28

Hi all!
Not been around for a while. Just popped in to ask if anyone has tried the LRP toleriane sensitive fluide? I'm on my last bottle of Toleriane fluide and now can't find it to buy.

Or any other recommendations of a basic, non-aggravating moisturiser!

mumno11 · 19/11/2018 22:31

Thanks @BabyPigeon83 and @SallieSallow .
Yes iam guilty of using a physical exfoliant!

Will look into Paula's choice and keep you updated.
