Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14 Thread 15 Thread 16

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

From the limited experience on here, the Vitamin C 23% and Azelaic Acid from Garden of Wisdom (at Victoria’s Health) is well liked and much preferred over TO versions.

OCTOBER 2018: In other news, we’re two years old this month! We’re so old- Drunk Elephant is finally available in the UK, but all this celebration is probably overshadowed by the fear that our beloved LRP Toleriane Fluide may have been discontinued Sad

Is anyone still using the GOW azelaic acid?

EnidButton · 08/11/2018 16:35

It was pretty old too JD and honestly I looked dreadful in it. I wore it everyday for months Confused
Some lovely things you've bought, plus onion bhajis! Can you wear the lip plumper under or over lipstick? Or does it have some colour in it?

Mint Still plenty of planning and prep time then. Cake

EnidButton · 08/11/2018 17:00

I've got two 20% online codes for M&S if anyone here wants one. They're one use only so I'll pm them rather than put em up. Ends on Monday.

I came on here yesterday to post this. Brain fog!

JDSTER · 08/11/2018 17:31

Enid the Dior lip plumper is worn on bare lips before lipstick. I usually use lipstick maybe 10 mins after applying, like I do with SPF prior to makeup. There’s no colour in the one I’m using but they’ve recently brought out two with a hint of colour which look nice. I was just sticking with what I know I like.

mintmagnummm · 08/11/2018 19:07

Enid there's not really much more planning for me to do, I'm VERY organised so pretty much have deposits paid for everything

Pupsiecola · 08/11/2018 19:24

Dr Sam strongly hinted on IG earlier that her next product will be nia.

EnidButton · 08/11/2018 21:18

Is it Niacinamide that's good for rosacea?

Mint impressed! I loved the build up part.

JD I might give that a go. Eveyone around here seems to have lip fillers! I'm seriously lacking compared to them.

Not a bitchy question and I know Botox and fillers can look good when done subtly and well (will get a tiny bit myself soon probably) but why do women who have it in their teens and 20s look much older afterwards? They look good but I'd guess late 30's/early 40's for a lot of them. I can't work out why.

EnidButton · 08/11/2018 21:19

Also either I've noticed some dark blue visible veins on my temples recently. I am very pale and veins are very visible on my wrists and hands etc but never on my face before. Don't like them at all. The new moisturiser and their appearance will be a coincidence right?

SallieSallow · 09/11/2018 18:59

I don’t think moisturiser would cause blue veins Enid I think they can appear when you’re tired or run down though, one of my friends has one right by her eye that gets very noticeable when she’s tired.

I’ve no idea why very young people get Botox etc, I agree it ages them, maybe because they have that obvious Botox or fillers look that you normally associate with older people trying to look younger. And they lose that fresh look teens and early 20 somethings normally have.

mintmagnummm · 09/11/2018 20:39

I bought the kiehls creamy avocado eye cream today.....

SallieSallow · 09/11/2018 23:23

Have you tried it yet Mint?

I’m eyeing up this one at the moment

www.kiehls.co.uk/skin-care/category/eyes-lips/youth-dose-eye-treatment/WW0062KIE.html

EnidButton · 10/11/2018 00:17

It's my fave Mint

Sallie yes I googled and I think it's just one of those things unfortunately. I am very see through but hasn't considered I'd ever get them there. They aren't very visible today so I think you're right. My fringe hides that bit anyway and if they stick around or develop people can get laser treatment for them apparently. I'll add it to the list Grin

EnidButton · 10/11/2018 00:19

Also I was being harsh about the young uns with fillers but I do think it's too much filler done by inexperienced practitioners. A decent one would send them on their way surely. But so long as they're happy and I shouldn't be so judgemental.

EnidButton · 10/11/2018 00:19

*hadn't

mintmagnummm · 10/11/2018 06:37

Sallie I used it for the first time last night and first impressions are very good! It's a weird texture it's hard to explain, it's really creamy but doesn't have much slip if that makes sense 🤔. I applied it to orbital bone and on my eyelid and once I'd managed to rub it all in it just completely disappeared! No migrating at all and no stinging or irritation which I have got with every other eye cream I've tried! My eyes are extremely watery all the time but last night they didn't water nowhere near as much, coincidence maybe but fingers crossed it continues. Test will be today if it makes my eyeshadow look better as the main reason I bought it was because no eyeshadow ever looks good on my crepey tired eyes! Will keep you posted.....

mintmagnummm · 10/11/2018 06:38

Wow that's an essay 😬.

Meant to say Enid i remembered you saying you loved it before which is one of reasons I went for it. 👍🏻

SallieSallow · 10/11/2018 08:47

Thanks for the review Mint maybe I should get that one instead but I like the sound of the youth dose with retinol and Vit c. Will have to check Kiehl’s returns policy though as YD does have the potential to be irritating.

Enid yes also agree that the very young uns are not usually likely to have much money or do research/have consultations with a doctor etc so will probably be getting their treatments at at hairdressers etc, who won’t turn them away as long as they pay.

Talking of hairdressers, it’s haircut day today Shock fingers crossed for me everyone Grin

BabyPigeon83 · 10/11/2018 10:02

Apropos the Botox and fillers, now they can be done at Superdrug 😁

SplatPancake · 10/11/2018 10:33

Niacinamide replacement woes continue:

Just popping back in to say that my skin is erupting again - I suspect it is not the Niacinamide at all, but either the Mineral 89 serum I started using at the same time as the original GOW purchase, or the Avene anti-rougeurs cream I’ve replaced my long-standing LRP rosacea with, which may be too rich. I’m not using either 89 or Avene consistently, but have just noticed that I do tend to break out after using. I’m not brave enough to experiment with just one or the other, as I just want current issues to clear up, and probably go back to the things I know and trust....

SallieSallow · 10/11/2018 11:14

Is the mineral 89 your first try of hyaluronic acid Splat? As there are a couple of people here who can’t use HA at all. If you’ve used and been ok with HA in the past then I’d be inclined to blame the new moisturiser - though it could be both. What was your routine before? If that was working then yes sounds sensible to go back to it.

TantricTwist · 10/11/2018 11:53

I can't use niacinamide and HA usually but I am finding that Superdrug's Simply pure and B. range with HA are very tolerable on my skin and are giving great hydrating results.

TantricTwist · 10/11/2018 11:55

Sallie good luck with the hair, hopefully there will be tears of joy not sorry later.

Mint I'm glad you've found an eye friendly product at last, fingers crossed it stays that way.

Enid I am finding the central heating is causing my veins to show like never before, but on my arms not face. Have you lost some weight maybe as that could explain it as there is less subcutaneous fat.

SallieSallow · 10/11/2018 14:51

I’m happy to report hair success Grin

Lost about 5 inches from the length so it’s now just a little bit above my bra strap, few long layers round the front only and a long blunt fringe. No washing, styling or faffing & cost £14.50 and it looks soooooo much better with all the rattiness gone from the ends.

I must really make an effort to go more often, I’m fine to do the mini trims at home myself in between but my hair grows so fast it needs a good chunk off it fairly regularly otherwise I end up like a cross between Hagrid and Rapunzel Shock

EnidButton · 10/11/2018 16:05

Hooray Sallie! Really pleased it went well! Sounds very nice.

Mint it does have a weird texture. Like wet but then hard to spread. Confused Majes me pat it in more though which you're meant to do around eyes I think. Hope it's a success.

Tant I've put on a couple of pounds if anything. I had a bruise on my eyelid again after the last migraine. Maybe it's something to do with that. 🤔 Not as visible to me today.

Pigeon Our Superdrug has a questionable brow grooming bar in it so don't think I'll be going there for Botox. Grin

EnidButton · 10/11/2018 17:04

Just did my adapted version of the snail method and my chin is the smoothest and clearest it's been since I was a child. 😳 Fingers crossed it doesn't get annoyed with me in two days time and break out in revenge.

Adapted method is me using a manual scrub on chin and nose instead of cleansing first and normal cleanser instead of oil. I know the oil cleanse is a major thing to change but oil cleansing when I'm not wearing make up is sometimes too much for my skin so wanted to try the other steps without it first. Next time I'll do the oil step.
