Hello! I’m after some advice from the all knowing noses....

In the summer I had an urge to smell like a Rhubarb and Custard sweet, and was helpfully signposted to 4160 Tuesday. I bought a whole little stash which I pick from every day (and like them all really) but the ones I have picked are all too sweet. I get really bad headaches with some perfumes and also lots smell really awful on me so I was v pleased that none of these had bad effects. But....I’m after a change.

Inspired by this thread title I think I would like to smell of a plum and cinnamon crumble. Or maybe posh hotel soap. Or gingernut biscuits. I do not like flowery smells really (except lavender or jasmine) and not too musky or heavy.

I have also realised that despite really liking sweet perfumes on other people, I like them less on myself! So the kind of tangier end (that’s why I like the rhubarb and custard one, it’s quite rhubarby).

Thank you again for taking an interest!!

PersisFord · 18/10/2018 20:36

By tangier I mean more tangy

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 18/10/2018 20:37

SOTD Bella Freud 1970. I forget how much I like this, and need to wear it more often.

Lotsofpots · 18/10/2018 22:28

Tried out a few of the PP dupes I ordered over the last few days. Initial thoughts:

SJPs covet is not for me. Tried as the description I'd read on this thread sounded intriguing. I've not smelt the original but the PP Version just didn't do it for me. Will seek out the original for comparison.

narciso rodriguez for her. I don't know if I've ordered the wrong PP version but this didn't smell anything like I remembered the original, which I remembered as much sexier and somewhat sweeter than this.

JM English oak and red currant. I like this. It's quite masculine, clean and sharp on me initially and then the oak starts to come through and make it rounder and warmer. I think it would be great layered with something but I can't work out what.

TF tobacco vanille. Yum. A slightly synthetic vanilla to start with which is exactly as I remembered the original to be on me. My first thought with both is 'hmmm does this smell a bit cheap' but then it changes, rounds out a bit and I just can't stop smelling it. So good.

And it goes without saying that MM by the fireside is amazing.

Lotsofpots · 18/10/2018 22:32

Oh and I'm another perfume loving feminist. I don't participate in any other MN discussions though. I'm literally only here for the perfume chat.

Branleuse · 18/10/2018 22:33

Ive tried the limeblossom PP Jm dupe now and im slightly disappointed. I think theyve tried to make it a bit limey rather than just linden/limeflower and of course theyre not the same at all.

Mrsr8 I find Cologne de Missions to be very vanillary, slightly boozy and not too sweet. It’s not nearly as sweet as Zadig & Voltaire This is Her, which is a sweet rich vanilla and chestnut.

Hello Persis, you might like to try Prada Infusion D’Iris. That has a posh hotel soap vibe. Also Hermes Twilly has lots of rhubarb and ginger, but alas no gourmand notes. Neither of these is sweet.

I wore Guerlain Insolence today, a violet perfume. I think the suffragettes might have worn something like this. I have been catching up on the feminist threads and am so worried that the women’s rights that were fought for in the seventies are now in danger. Have completed the consultation (and am smelling very violetty).

MrsLucas · 18/10/2018 23:37

Persis - Paradoxe could tick the expensive soap box, slightly brash for all of 2 mins then a delicious soapy/smokiness (although is animalic in the same way as Paloma Picasso). Cheap at Perfume Click -I'm laying down stocks Grin. Green - if you're out there, you need some of this!
You too Floof and Sud!

Cologne de missions is really sweet and vanillary
Its nice though but id need to be in the mood. Good value on amazon.

Not as overpoweringly sweet as tobacco vanilla though which i cant even wear

BookMeOnTheSudExpress · 19/10/2018 06:52

Paradoxe you say?
Sounds right up my street, soap and smoky animal combo!
eBay buyers continue to do my nut in. Posted one package on the 10th and buyer moaning it's not arrived on the 16th. It's coming economy parcel post from Italy you nump. Another one sends a message "Please can I have a refund, hasn't arrived" (this is the one who messaged 2 days after auction ended asking where it was- answer, "over the Alps probably love"

Someone did pay £15 for 10ml of Liz Earle n9 though. I hope they saw it was 10ml and aren't expecting a full bottle!

Hope you feel better soon Mrsr

Naomi Goodsir's Or du Serail for me today. Honey, rum and tobacco, with a slight rotten-fruit edge that I really like. It actually reminds me very much of Dark Heart of Old Havana, which I know divides opinions but is a big love of mine.

I ordered Chergui and Gingembre in the end. They are two of my favourites and I'll never have another chance to get them at that price. I'm having them delivered to work, though, so won't get my sticky mitts on them until Tuesday at the earliest. Sign of a guilty conscience or what?! Grin

Calm I love Insolence. The EDP is one of my favourite bedtime fragrances.

Colognes de Missions is quite sweet, a very true vanilla and something slightly smoky/tobacco-ish (a note I usually dislike) in there. It's not a love for me, but a strong like and good for layering with other fragrances.

SOTD is a fairly pedestrian option: Coco Mademoiselle. Its a decent office workhorse, though, this one, even if not very exciting.

Today I am wearing The Dark Heart of Old Havana by 4160 Tuesdays. It's in my sample drawer. There's something a bit sickly sweet/bin juicy about it. Perhaps I love the name more than the scent, but I do keep returning to it.

Am also a GC feminist.

SotD Si le Parfum. Luxe Nesquik.

Have caved an ordered another 50ml of Paradoxe. Still feeling borderline anxious about running out. (I only have back-ups of four other things). Do you folks stockpile anything?

OC - if you are out there I think you might like this too? (Apologies - I've lost the plot with name changes). I think you wear Choc? This doesn't have the aldehydes but dates from the same area and there is a certain 'house' similarity.

For the GC perfumistas remember tonight's the last day to fill in the consultation.

SotD Noel au Balcon.

UnnecessaryFennel · 19/10/2018 18:07

Yes, I really like Pillow Talk blah. To me, it's a very soft and comforting sandalwood/jasmine with an orange-blossom topnote that whispers rather than shouts. It's sweet but not overly so, and pretty but not twee. I think a 9ml would definitely be worth a punt.

UnnecessaryFennel · 19/10/2018 18:17

I stockpile MG Fire (have 150ml altogether) and Creamy Vanilla Crumble - I am down to 40ml at the mo and am getting a bit panicky...I think I'm going to ask for another bottle for Xmas.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 19/10/2018 19:28

SOTD is MMM Sunday Morning. I have requested Byredo Bibliotheqie from my mum for Christmas. She’s also asked me for perfume - “something light”. Any ideas? Ideally something from Boots, because points. Budget up to £50. Previously she has worn Chanel No 5, Armani She, Youth Dew and Opium when I was a kid, some Jo Malones.
