But I think William V of England, III of the United Kingdom and IV of Scotland is a bit of a mouthful!

When I opened the link, I thought it was a blazer but it’s described as a blouse. I never thought it would be over 1K!

Tend to agree that the look was perhaps rushed.

QueenOfTheAndals · 25/09/2018 10:58

Apparently they'd just got back from a weekend in Amsterdam so maybe they'd partied hard over there and were still recovering!

Haggishaggispudding · 25/09/2018 11:57

Surely just William III is most accurate then?

QueenOfTheAndals · 25/09/2018 12:16

No because there's already been a William III and William IV who were just monarchs of Great Britain!

Apparently today's solo engagement is the one year anniversary of when she appeared with Harry at the Invictus games.
I can't believe she has done so much in just one year. Didn't they only get engaged in November or December. I forget.
This time next year, there will probably be a bump or a baby...!

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 25/09/2018 13:22

Just read about the 3 day jaunt in Amsterdam! lucky Megs & Harry.
I like the Royal Family, in principle, but despite the media interest in them, it is a life of riley!

QueenOfTheAndals · 25/09/2018 13:33

I think it was November that they married and I can't remember any royal fiancee doing as many public engagements as Meghan did.

OP posts:
QueenOfTheAndals · 25/09/2018 13:33

Sorry, November they got engaged, not married!

Five Williams: Two of England, the Conqueror and his son, also William. One of Scotland: William the Lion. Two of GB/UK: William III (of William and Mary fame) and William IV (Queen Victoria's uncle and immediate predecessor. Using the conventional system suggested by Churchill, Prince William would use the highest number which would be make him William V.

SenecaFalls · 25/09/2018 13:58

Of course that assumes he picks William as his regnal name.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 25/09/2018 14:05

I think he will keep William as his mother chose it. (Charles wanted Arthur)
William V is a nice departure from the endless Georges.
Anyway, we have Charles III to get through.
At least another decade.
We are going to have old age pensioner kings unless there is some kind of Tragedy

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 25/09/2018 14:08

Remember Harry saying no one wanted the "top job".
Do you think that is true of Charles, or do you think its just the younger generation who feel that way.

If Edward VIII had not abdicated, I think the Queen would have been happy living in the country, breeding Horses, let Phillip become First Sea Lord (or whatever the top Admiral job is.) She would have just been Princess Elizabeth, Countess of Something (a bit like Margaret.)

Although Edward had no children, so I guess HM was destined to be lumbered, but not till the 1970's which would have changed every thing.

QueenOfTheAndals · 25/09/2018 14:23

It's quite tragic that George VI died so young - he was only in his early 50s. Really, Elizabeth should've had about 25 more years of being Duchess of Edinburgh, so she could enjoy raising her children and having a life out of the spotlight. I think part of the reason Andrew is her alleged favourite is because by the time he was born she'd been queen for a while so she knew the job and had more time to dedicate to him.

OP posts:
Jackietheduck · 25/09/2018 15:32

I think Charles is very very keen to take over, I’d say he will be torn between mourning for his mother and glee at finally taking to the throne!

MissLingoss · 25/09/2018 15:32

Elizabeth should've had about 25 more years of being Duchess of Edinburgh, so she could enjoy raising her children and having a life out of the spotlight.

And Philip could have enjoyed his naval career for longer. I believe he was regarded as a promising young officer, so it must have been frustrating to have his career cut short before he'd gone as far as he could.

It's quite sad looking at the photos of the King waving Elizabeth off on the plane to Kenya, seeing how ill he looks and knowing he only had a few days to live.

OlennasWimple · 25/09/2018 15:47

The Dutch (of course) are so much more pragmatic. Queen Beatrix abdicated when she was 75 after 33 years on the throne. She had plenty of time to do the role of monarch, but also got to "retire" and enjoy her later years. And Willem got to be king whilst still young enough to enjoy it and make the most of it.

I know why HMQ won't stand down in favour of Charles, but it's a shame for both Charles and William (as I can't see Charles abdicating, having waited so long to get the job)

Paradyning · 25/09/2018 16:34

There is of course the alternative hypothesis as to why Andrew is the favourite son. Ahem.

QueenOfTheAndals · 25/09/2018 16:37

Now don't tell porchies porkies...

OP posts:
Clionba · 25/09/2018 16:51

HM is very gradually handing over the reins to Charles. He does a lot of the work now, she is increasingly at Windsor. The others are going to have to pick stuff up. She'll never abdicate, (too negative for her) but Charles will effectively be the king in all but name.

VanillaSugary · 25/09/2018 17:36

I wonder if the Porchesters will attend the wedding? Now, that will be interesting.

missclimpson · 25/09/2018 17:45

Lord Porchester has been dead for years, I thought?

Clionba · 25/09/2018 17:52

What about the daughter, Lady Saorsie Herbert? Folks may do a double take....

Jackietheduck · 25/09/2018 18:08

I just googled Lady Ssoirse Herbert. She is the image of the York woman about to get married (I always mix them up!) Eugenie?

QueenOfTheAndals · 25/09/2018 18:20

Meghan's arrived at the RA in a black Givenchy midi dress but the video footage I saw on twitter doesn't really give us a good look at it.
