Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a lightbulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Lovely photo Olli are your feet dangling in stinging nettles??

My Ultrasun face spf which I like very much smells a bit like poster paint Confused

mintmagnummm · 15/06/2018 17:31

Tant did you see my earlier post about ultrasun reformulating all of their products? There are a few new ones now but soon all of their existing ones will be reformulated

Ollivander84 · 15/06/2018 17:36

Tantric - yep!!

TantricTwist · 15/06/2018 17:38

Mint Yes I did, I'm happy with how it is at the moment but I'm sure the reformulation will be fine.

I've decided to not use the same SPF everyday but to mix them up a bit. Defo no stinging eyes with the Utrasun.

I'm loving my bargain £5 Nivea eye cream, it's just what I've been after and I particularly love the tube it comes in.

TantricTwist · 15/06/2018 17:40

Olli Oooops Grin your feet look great though dangling in them, I hope you didn't get stung.

TantricTwist · 15/06/2018 17:45

I've started to use TO Azaelic acid in the mornings as I have a spare tube of it. My Neostrata retinol has finished and I'll be back to using the TO retinoid Granactive 2% of which I still have a couple of bottles. It's mild on me so better perhaps for summer use esp in conjunction with the AA.

mintmagnummm · 15/06/2018 17:51

Tant what is the eye cream called? I'm liking the gow one but interested in any recommendations especially cheap ones!

Ollivander84 · 15/06/2018 18:38

Tantric - not too bad luckily! I have shoes on but I got stung on my ankle

SheStoodInTheStorm · 15/06/2018 21:47

Haha @botemp that did make me laugh!
Indeed that is me Smile. Now I don't even follow CH on Instagram after some of the awful things she's said.

Very basic routine for me now, I don't have the healthy glowing skin I'd like, but fewer spots! I dropped the acid because it seemed to cause huge spots. Scared to try another!

mintmagnummm · 16/06/2018 10:51

I need to find a good waterproof eyeshadow cream as I think my shadow has been slipping and sweating into my eyes making them sore despite me using a supposedly long wear one (no7) I know a few of you use the Bobbi brown sticks, are these really good and worth the ££

miffy2 · 16/06/2018 12:01

Tantric were you using the Neostrata NAG? Did you like it? I am considering it for when my P&M superstar oil finishes (it is ok but not wowing me; definitely gentle on the skin though)

TantricTwist · 16/06/2018 13:14

Mint its Nivea Q10 anti-aging eye cream (NOT the one with Vit C)

Miffy2 yes it was Neostrata NAG but Pupsie tried it and her face practically fell off using it. Although my skin is sensitive ie goes red a lot and I get reactions to products it was fine with Neostrata because I seem to have tough, thick, elastic skin.

mintmagnummm · 16/06/2018 13:20

Thanks tant

TantricTwist · 16/06/2018 14:46

Miffy yes I did like the Neostrata and I do think it made a difference to the texture of my skin and redness left over from scarring years ago.

user1499173618 · 16/06/2018 14:55

botemp - I read your guide to retinoids. I think that the Avene Retrinal you mentioned as being for the US market is the same as the Avene Ystheal on sale in France. Very good value for money and recommended by dermatologists!

mintmagnummm · 16/06/2018 16:28

My skin pissing me off at moment! It's oily, and spotty and red!!
Used my eucerin moisturiser this morn and no spf (am waiting for my new one which I hoped would arrive today but it hasn't!) and my skin is definitely more oily using this in the am.
I am on my period which I'm sure is one of main reasons it's playing up but it still really gets to me! Some people seem to have lovely skin with no issues even at time of month etc and they use nothing!! (One of my friends!!)

SophieLion · 16/06/2018 16:36

Hi User, I think that the Ystheal is a milder product and not the same as the Retrinal but I'm sure Bo will have the exact answer!

Love the photo Ollie but it did make me laugh that you had to sit with your feet dangling in the stinging nettles Grin

Shop · 16/06/2018 17:08

Hi Sophie, I paid £18 or so I think for 2 tubes of skinoren. How are you getting on with it?

Tsmummy08 · 16/06/2018 17:37

Argh my DE vit C is about to run out Shock and the GOW vit C is OOS at Victoria Health..... booooo, grrrrrr!

Anyone know when DE is supposedly being stocked at Space NK? It was supposed to be now, so I'm really hoping they haven't pulled out....

SophieLion · 16/06/2018 18:17

Thanks Shop. It works out at about £10 for 2 tubes here (in Greece). Ok not sure how I'm getting on as I've only used it twice. I keep getting under the skin spots coming up on my chin - they are improving with the tret but think the azelaic is to help some more. I don't have any new/painful ones but the existing ones are taking forever to go.

How is Skinoren working for you?

No idea re DE and SpaceNK Tsmummy.

mintmagnummm · 16/06/2018 18:21

Sophie what's the rest of your routine at present? I know it's very basic but can't remember. Are you using the skinoren every day?

mintmagnummm · 16/06/2018 18:22

Tant was it you who was using the origins moisturiser? How are u getting on with it?

SophieLion · 16/06/2018 18:27

And how long have you been using it Shop?

TantricTwist · 16/06/2018 19:38

Mint the freebie Origins from the M&S summer box? Yes it's been fine although I've only used it a couple of times so far. I should have used it today actually after applying my azaelic acid but I got distracted and added nothing after.

SophieLion · 16/06/2018 19:38

Ah must have cross-posted with you Mint.

Yes my routine is very basic. AM is cleanse and eye cream (sometimes I use some Vichy HA but only around eye area) and SPF.

PM is cleanse and eye cream. Tret 0.5% currently twice a week - am increasing it v slowly (it will be 3 times a week soon) and derm says she will put me on 1% at some point.
Literally just started azelaic acid (the Skinoren contains 20%) and using every other night.

No other creams and honestly I don't notice any difference since stopping moisturiser. Skin feels a bit tight after cleansing but then it's fine. I think derm prefers actives and likes to introduce them all slowly and one at a time. She won't allow me to start vit C yet.
