Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a lightbulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Chester meant to say have you not tried the altruist yourself? You said your looking for spf as frezyderm stings your eyes too so just wondered if you had tried that altruist?
I've got some heliocare to try so will let you know how that goes!! Such a pain in the arse isn't it

Tsmummy08 · 10/07/2018 13:18

JDSTER Retinoids can be used (judiciously) around the eye area - I like the Verso serum, which has a less irritating retinoid in it (although if I'm honest it can be a little sting-y sometimes). I've also applied a tiny bit of retin-A around the eye area from time, although it's probably not recommended! Whatever you use, remember not to get your eyebrows waxed when using a vit A product - it doesn't end well.....

ChesterBelloc · 10/07/2018 13:44

I have some Factor 50 Altruist arriving today, mint. Will let you all know how I get on with it - fingers crossed it doesn't hurt my eyes 🤞

mintmagnummm · 10/07/2018 14:30

Oh great Chester let's hope we have both found one we like now then!!

cad186 · 10/07/2018 15:04

Mint I've been using the clinique mineral spf, it's ok but I think my make up looks a bit cakey so I won't be repurchasing!

SophieLion · 10/07/2018 15:48

JDSTER- I am using my tret 0.5% along my cheekbone/eyesocket bone and at the side of the eyes where crows feet are. So far I haven't had any problems. I'm careful not to go closer to the eye than that. Haven't gone near the eyelid area though. IIRC Bo was using (or has used) the Verso eye serum too and I think she liked it (although best to check with her!).

Thanks Tant. I'm now on tret 3x a week and reluctant to decrease that as it's really helping the spots. Surprisingly for Greece, I'm not in the sun that much and keeping a very stylish baseball cap (!) in my bag so I can throw it on even to walk from car to Supermarket etc. Still I guess when we go on proper hols I should perhaps reduce the tret use. My derm did tell me to cut back so I'm being a bit naughty really Blush

JDSTER · 10/07/2018 16:42

Ts sophie thanks I am using a retinoid and I do let it migrate around the outer corners of eyes without any problem. I need something for upper eye area really, although I appreciate that is not what eye serum/cream is designed for. Ts l learnt the hard way with eyebrow waxing whilst using differin when it pulled off the skin under my eyes !
I have them threaded now......

SophieLion · 10/07/2018 17:29

I am using an eye cream with retinol in it JDSTER. I suspect the % is very low as it doesn't say what it is but I can apply it on my eyelid without any problems. It's the Castalia Chromoderm one (Gel Creme Yeux Retinol).

mintmagnummm · 10/07/2018 18:57

Cad oh no that's a shame :-(

SallieSallow · 10/07/2018 20:18

Hello to everyone old and new 👋 Smile

I'm still in the market for a good eye cream, I like my Alpha h eye gel for an instant fix but it doesn't give long term results imo. I was doing the same as Sophie and taking tret up to my crows feet with no issues but I've stopped tret for now due to weather and travel. And same as you JDSTER I'd really like something I can use nearer my eye/on the eyelid. The alpha h eye gel can be used all over the eyelid which is great but it just doesn't 'do' much.

I've also stopped using moisturiser as don't need it at this time of year so my routine is as basic as it gets - cleanse, Vichy thermal water, Vichy 89, eye gel, done Grin

Oh and frezyderm of course, I'm on the tinted version now and love it - I'm using it instead of foundation most days. Though I know that's no help for those of you who can't use it.

SophieLion · 10/07/2018 20:31

Hi Sallie, I was wondering where you'd been. Nice to "see" you again!

On a different note, I'm looking for a matte fuschia lipstick. I've got Diva by MAC (which is a matte burgundy) and like the matte effect but I'm not sure the two pinks closest to fuschia in that range are what I'm looking for.

Has anyone used the MAC retro matte liquid lip colour? I've read some reviews which say it is very drying.
Alternatively can anyone else recommend a fuschia matte lipstick from a more mainstream range I'm likely to find here?! So MAC, Smashbox. YSL, Dior, Chanel etc etc. Most of the Space NK brands, for eg, I can't find here I think.
Olli - I recall you had suggested a brand of matte lipstick. I wrote it down on my laptop which I currently don't have access to so would be great if you could remind me.

Thanks everyone!

mintmagnummm · 10/07/2018 20:50

Sallie I'm not using moisturiser at night either, just the mineral 89, it's so much better!
Apparently the tinted frezyderm is tolerated better on the eyes than the original 🤔, that's actually from frezydetm themselves as I emailed to ask if they would be making an spf free from octocrylene in the future.

JDSTER · 10/07/2018 21:35

Sorry, back to the eyes again, I think part of my problem is fluid retention in my face, in the morning. I’ve just done my evening skincare routine and upper eyes have much more definition. They’ll look sort of puffy again in the morning no doubt. I do wee a lot in the morning too, so obviously peeing out the fluid I’ve accumulated overnight Confused. I’m perfectly healthy by the way Grin

Nofilter · 10/07/2018 21:56

Thanks enid I'll check that out Wink

EnidButton · 10/07/2018 21:58

The only thing I've ever tried on my eyes that make an instant visible difference are the Skyn eye gels. But it's temporary and they're expensive for one use products. They're a special occasion/treat product. I still want something like those but in a daily serum or cream. Think that's asking too much though.

Mint Have you looked at spf ranges aimed at children? I'm just speculating here so prob wrong but I thought they might be gentler maybe? Won't be formulated to work under make up mind you but could be worth investigating. Are you feeling ok this week btw? Was reading on another thread that Summer seasonal affective disorder is a thing. Some people get more down and stressed than usual during hotter weather and lighter days. Hope you're feeling a bit better anyway. 🌷Cake

EnidButton · 10/07/2018 21:59

X posted, you're welcome filter. Might not be what you're looking for but it's a nice product.

mintmagnummm · 11/07/2018 06:19

Enid thank you, yes I have tried a few spf's for children as I have a son so that's my excuse to try them 😉. They do definitely seem more gentle, love the lrp and Vichy kids ones most but they definitely aren't suitable under makeup (for my skin anyway)

I'm actually poorly at mo so obviously feeling down about that but generally I'm better in the summer, hate being sweaty etc but the sunshine makes me feel good. Does anyone know anything to help a sore throat? And when I say sore I mean absolute agony! Been docs but they said just take painkillers, however nothing at all is touching the pain and I now have ear ache and head ache on same side that throat is sore and my whole body aches! Not sleeping the pain is so bad, it's extremely red and inflamed and tbh I could honestly cry.

mintmagnummm · 11/07/2018 07:46

Ok so I tried the heliocare this morn.....made my face feel like it was on fire! And something weird happened, it was as if my skin was rejecting it because I had a layer of water/sweat on the surface straight after! Had to remove immediately!! It's so weird! There's got to be a common ingredient in the ones that burn my face! And it can't be that I'm allergic to chemical spf because frezyderm doesn't sting my face one bit! But I just can't continue with this one due to the irritation to my eyes even when I don't apply it anywhere near them it still runs into my eyes at some point during day.
Back to square one yet again! There must be something similar to frezyderm without the octocrylene 🤔

PickledHoneybuzzard · 11/07/2018 08:21

mint sorry you're so poorly, have you tried gargling with soluble aspirin for your throat? Dissolve it in small amount of water as if you were going to drink it and then gargle for as long as you can before spitting it out. Do that with all the solution. It works like a local anaesthetic and you can do it in addition to the pain relief you are swallowing.

PickledHoneybuzzard · 11/07/2018 08:28

Another thing mint are you putting sunscreen onto perfectly dry, bare skin? I have to be very careful what I layer spf over as I've had similar reactions to you which turned out to be caused by the combination of products, rather than the actual products, iyswim.
I had a particularly bad time in Greece once and ended up in the local pharmacy where they sold me some Korres sunscreen in a push up stick, not sure what the spf/star rating was like but I had no reactions at all. If you could find it and haven't tried it maybe it's worth a shot?

SophieLion · 11/07/2018 08:58

Mint we have a throat gargle here with a painkiller in it. Called Sol-u-ket (or Sol-u-kent). It's very effective. Get well soon Thanks

Ollivander84 · 11/07/2018 09:02

Tyrozets and difflam spray for throat, loads and loads of warm (not hot) drinks
Also ice cream or McDonald's milkshakes!

mintmagnummm · 11/07/2018 11:25

Thank you for all the well wishes everyone 💐

Pickled yes I have been doing that with the dissolvable aspirin, it worked a treat last time but not helping this time :-(. As for spf I always apply it on top of my Vichy mineral 89, not all the spf's I've tried have stung though so it can't be that as it's not consistent if you see what I mean? Thanks you for suggestion though x

Sophie not sure we have that gargle here but will look into it thank you x

Olli just bought some of those tyrozets but she said not to take difflam spray aswell?? Anyway had one tyrozet so far but hasn't touched the pain, numbed roof of mouth though! I'll take them throughout day and think I will get that spray too. Can I take them both???

TantricTwist · 11/07/2018 12:01

I quite often get pharyngitis and end up not leaving my GP till he prescribes me antibiotics because I know from my experience that nothing else will get rid of it and it just ends up getting much worse on aspirin and paracetamol etc.

SophieLion · 11/07/2018 12:13

I was also thinking about Korres Pickled. There is an SPF 50 for the face (cream not a stick) with yoghurt in it. I'm personally not a fan of Korres SPFs - no particular reason ie I've not had any reaction. They just feel a bit heavy on my face.

I don't like the Korres body SPFs at all because they leave the most horrendous yellow marks on clothes and swimwear which don't come out.

So does no one have any ideas about the matte fuchsia lipstick for me?! Sad
