Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a lightbulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

Oh and whilst I’m at it if anyone would like to try bioderma cicabio 50+ or frezyderm let me know - neither are going back on my face sadly.

BagelGoesWalking · 06/07/2018 19:44

RenardeRenarde that's very, very kind of you! I will PM you and make a donation to a charity instead, if you're sure.

TantricTwist · 06/07/2018 20:15

Hi Renarde I'd love to try the bioderma cicabio please

RenardeRenarde · 06/07/2018 20:27

That would be lovely Bagel!
No problem Tantric just Pm me with an address and I’ll sort it.
I’m starting to understand poor Mint’s angst about sunscreen, Biore perfect bright milk is the next contender on the list (I’m praying to the skin gods right now...)

Violet18 · 06/07/2018 20:53

Just used Dr Sam's cleanser, my skin feels soooo clean! So far so good, no stinging eyes (fingers crossed). Face a little tight after using it, but my face usually is after washing no matter what I use (note to self - be gentle with my flannel!)

Had chippy tea for the first time in ages. I'm now awaiting the 'chips face' over the next couple of days ie. a couple of big red spots. I swear my skin hates deep fried food. I seem to get 'sugar face' too when I eat a lot of chocolate. This sound familiar with anyone?!

mintmagnummm · 06/07/2018 21:27

Renarde finally someone that understands! Let me know how you get on with the biore. I'm trying ultrasun next! Hi

mintmagnummm · 06/07/2018 21:47

Just ordered the bigger shower oil!

SophieLion · 06/07/2018 22:11

Mint, doesn't vit C normally go on in the morning? So it shouldn't interfere with nighttime application of azelaic acid.

Can't remember order with HA - think vit C might be first. It's definitely in one of Bo's info sheets - the anti-ageing one IIRC.

TantricTwist · 06/07/2018 22:12

Thanks Renarde Smile

EnidButton · 06/07/2018 22:35

Definitely get that Violet! Wheat, fried stuff and sugar.

Glad you like the shower oil Mint. I just used it again after a week or two without it and feel much better for it. Skin is kind of more comfortable.

mintmagnummm · 07/07/2018 07:08

Sophie yes I did think that vit c was for morning but every one I've seen says evening 🤔. Anyway I'm thinking I shouldn't start vit c tbh think I'm best keeping it simple. I tried that Avene fragrance free fluid you so kindly sent me and my face was on fire! Honestly the burning sensation was so bad I literally had to remove it immediately!! I don't know what's in it that would have caused that though but there's definitely something in avene spf that burns my skin! Not sure whether I should try the cleanance one now, I'm scared!

mintmagnummm · 07/07/2018 07:09

Enid I wasn't expecting to like it tbh, I was thinking it wouldn't foam at all and so I wouldn't feel clean and fresh especially when wearing factor 50 all over but it removed it better than my soaper duper!!

banivani · 07/07/2018 09:02

I don’t think it matters much when you use actives/products as long as they’re used so they can play nicely together iyswim.

Pupsiecola · 07/07/2018 09:08

Vit C is recommended in the morning because it gives some extra protection against free radicals.

PickledHoneybuzzard · 07/07/2018 09:37

mint if you have problems with cleansers have you tried the REN evercalm? I'm not too bothered by their other products but I have never had the slightest reaction to that cleanser. Even after overdoing the tret/hydraquinone combination once it left my face soft, clean and really soothed. It is often cheaper on Amazon than M&S btw.

mintmagnummm · 07/07/2018 09:42

Pickled I'm not looking for a new cleanser, maybe your thinking of someone else??

PickledHoneybuzzard · 07/07/2018 09:49

Hmmm I think you're right! Sorry

TantricTwist · 07/07/2018 10:00

So I've reverted to using my trusty Garnier Summer body moisturiser in Deep for the self tan look.

I'm too scared to pfaff around with normal self tan.

And actually I forgot how easy it is and how well it matches my normal skin tone etc and it never streaks on me.
I like the deep colour best because it gives you more of a tan and it lasts a few days.

Plus it's on special offer for £5 for a large 500ml bottle so you can't go wrong really.

TantricTwist · 07/07/2018 10:01

*400ml bottle

miffy2 · 07/07/2018 10:13

See, Tantric, I didn't get on well at all with the Garnier gradual tan. It really is a case of finding what works for you and your skin, in all aspects of skin and body care!

My skin is loving the new summer/heatwave PM combo of LRP Redermic R Intense followed by Vichy Aqualia thermal serum. I had promised myself no new products for a while but actually, switching out from Superstar oil and P50 the past week or so has been amazing.

Tsmummy08 · 07/07/2018 10:34

Pupsie My right shoulder is a bit dodgy too, I have to watch it and Miffy nice to have another lifter here :) I had a look at Chloe Madeley's site - surprisingly good for a "celeb" fitness person (and slightly odd as I can remember hearing about her when she was a little kid!)

My Frezyderm/It Cosmetics CC cream combo faired well at an afternoon/evening open-air gig last night - it's now my go-to when I'm going to be out in the sun a fair bit, although I might be tempted to try a mineral sunscreen (ugh) + CC for multi-day/all-day festivals....

Tsmummy08 · 07/07/2018 10:36

Oh and I bought some Vita Liberata Body Blur in Latte yesterday - did someone here recommend it? Might have chosen one slightly too dark but the Cafe Creme one looked really light! Does anyone else use it?

mintmagnummm · 07/07/2018 10:37

My skin is so spotty at the moment! Lots of little whiteheads and rashy! Could be from trialling so many spf's on my face lately and also this heat!! I literally cannot get cool and my face feels so claggy like I've got cling film over it!

Pupsiecola · 07/07/2018 10:44

TS I know. Chloe gets a lot of stick, and she went through a rebellious stage, but I admire her for turning her life around. She works hard, no doubt about it.

miffy2 · 07/07/2018 11:23

TS I use the VL body Blur for emergencies when I suddenly need to rid my arms/legs of their blue tint :D I apply with the same velvet mitt I use for regular tan, so it probably wastes some product but it goes on smoothly.
