Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a lightbulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

I've been using that LRP cleanser in the shower and now my elbows are itchy AF; eczma is on its way :-(

BagelGoesWalking · 05/07/2018 17:08

Nooo Pupsie hate that feeling, when you know something has happened and what the likely outcome will be. Eczema is such a bugger. Which L
RP cleanser is it?

Pupsiecola · 05/07/2018 17:21

That moisturising one everyone loves! It stung like bonkers first time of using on my face so I thought I'd use it in the shower rather than waste the entire bottle.

BagelGoesWalking · 05/07/2018 17:43

Oh dammit, nothing is ever simple, is it! I made a post asking about the most gentle cleanser ever (on the Caroline Hirons Fb group). The two that were mentioned the most were REN Evercalm Cleanser and Dermalogica Ultra Calming. Another was the Pai Camellia and Rose Cleanser. The Dr Sam Flawless was also popular, so I think it's going to be between that and the REN.

Although I do already have Sanskrit Saponins which I really should be trying to use up as I opened in February, I think.

SallieSallow · 05/07/2018 18:50

Just popping in to say hello Smile nothing new here, I've pared my routine right back partly due to lots of work travel (flights = cramming everything into that stupidly little plastic bag) but I've also ditched Tret for now due to the weather as I've been outside a lot more than usual.

I'm still using and liking frezyderm and have repurchased. And still really like LRP toleriane hydrating cleanser. I'm almost out of my una Brennan cleansing oil, think I'll try either simple or DHC next.

Off to try and catch up now.....

TantricTwist · 05/07/2018 19:55

Sallie I'm still enjoying Frezyderm, in fact it's become my go to SPF at the moment because it seems to be working the best for me in this hot sweaty weather.

I'm really enjoying my new PM routine atm

Dr Sam Bunting - Flawless Cleanser - I love this so so much but am alternating with my Murad anti blemish face wash which I also love.
LRP Thermal water
Nivea Q10 plus anti-wrinkle eye cream
Goldfaden MD - Wakeup Call
Origins - Ginseng Gel moisturiser

These all make up a perfect hot summer routine for me atm.

My am routine is just

Water and a flannel
Nivea Q10 plus anti-wrinkle eye cream
Frezyderm
No make up.

mintmagnummm · 05/07/2018 20:23

Have returned my dr Sam cleanser, I'm sad about this but my skin 100% did not like it!

EnidButton · 05/07/2018 20:25

Bagel acne antibiotics take about 3-4 months to start working in my experience. Understand you be cautious about her taking them for a long time though. Just thought I'd say. Smile

RenardeRenarde · 05/07/2018 22:23

Bagel If you want to try the Pai cleanser you’re welcome to have mine to try. I have rosacea and it wasn’t irritating for me but didn’t suit my skin type, I have a feeling it would suit drier skin. I love, love, love the smell so this was a distressing discovery!
Annoyingly I had the Dermalogica one too but I recently threw it out, I just didn’t feel like it washed away cleanly, even using a cloth.

I usually lurk on this thread but my god I need to have a quick moan... my skin is an unpleasant combination of clogged, oily and horribly dehydrated currently, courtesy of the weather and an unwise fling with Frezyderm (followed by an equally disastrous try with Cicabio 50+).

I know damn well what my skin likes and rarely deviate from my routine, must remember not to “experiment” when it’s too sunny to fall back on actives!

mintmagnummm · 06/07/2018 06:32

Bagel dermalogica ultracalming is lovely, it's one of the only cleansers I can use long term! I've switched to avene extremely gentle though now but only because of the cost and is often on offer, plus don't have to order it online. I never tried pai, but dr Sam was horrible for me :-( I think I'll be in the minority here though.

Tsmummy08 · 06/07/2018 07:34

Pupsie If there's no irritation, I'd use the P&M every night. I ordered it yesterday and as it's probably a few steps down from tret in terms of strength, I may well end up using it nightly rather than every other night.

Calories - yes I track them, and have been doing so through my bulk as I had no idea what my maintenance level was and I tend towards not eating enough if I'm left to my own devices. I used Avatar nutrition to give me kcals and stay accountable then got a coach 5 weeks ago who's giving me macros each week and I plan my own food (or not). I tend to follow a flexible IIFYM approach as it's more practical for me as someone who does the cooking for a family (who won't appreciate a Bro-type diet). My kcals have increased from a maintenance of around 16-700kcal at 5' tall (that was when I was about 98lbs!!) and has increased to around 2200-2400kcal for the last few months. The gradual increase and keeping a surplus has allowed me to gain about 12lbs over 7 months, and obviously body fat has gone up as well but I'm hoping there's a decent amount of muscle under here!

Cutting will probably be slow - I've got 12 weeks to get down to what I assume will be 95-100lb stage weight. It's been mentally tough to allow my body to look this way and eat the number of carbs I've been eating after 15 years of low carbs.

Body recomp is difficult but possible, Martin Macdonald is a great evidence-based sports nutritionist to follow if you're into such things.... it may be that you'll have to increase kcal slightly (protein and carbs) and do some heavy weights rather than HIIT to get that goal of fat loss and muscle gain but I'm sure you already know all that stuff :)

Pupsiecola · 06/07/2018 09:02

Thanks TS. Very interesting. I'm 5'7" and too heavy atm. I want to shift at least 14lbs. Never gonna be light with my size 9 feet and big hands lol. What's your macro split? I tend to go with 30% protein, 35% carbs and 35% fat. I struggle to hit protein sometimes, but I try to make sure I have at least 120g a day. I would love to find someone to help me calculate this stuff with my main goal of fat loss in mind (don't mind not building muscle atm, just don't want to lose too much). I don't know who would offer such a service, because I wouldn't want a full on PT service.

The early morning class is a mix of HIIT and weights. It's actually much like metabolic conditioning in many ways which is great as there are many benefits which are aligned with my goals. This week has been heavy weights in intervals. Yesterday was 40kg chest press (with a spotter) which is heavy for me (lower body strength better than upper body!). I haven't been in the home gym at all over the last 5 weeks as I don't want to overtrain, but I will get in there at some point soon and bash out some heavy stuff.

I follow Chloe Madeley who knows her stuff imo.

Pupsiecola · 06/07/2018 09:49

My Bobbi Brown cream shadow sticks are melting. And now I'm thinking about my actives. It's up to 28 degrees in the bedroom 😫

Ollivander84 · 06/07/2018 10:31

Makeup revolution pro foundation drops are absolutely awesome, really impressed that they have decent coverage but feel light

BagelGoesWalking · 06/07/2018 10:50

Enid Yes, I know, just being overanxious mum, I guess!

RenardeRenarde That's very generous of you! Such nice people on Mumsnet Grin Please let me know how much you'd like for it, postage etc.

Have a good day, everyone. Typical that I have a Dr's appt today and my skin has completely calmed down (except for conjunctivitis fun) Last Friday was another story! Will be relying on photos to convince him I'm not a total hypochondriac.

Tsmummy08 · 06/07/2018 10:55

Pupsie My macro split is 50% CHO, 20% Pro and 30% Fat - but there's no magic ratio really. It will probably change when I start dieting with a higher proportion of protein and lower carbs/fats.

I'd definitely struggle with a 40kg chest press, nice work! I think the vast majority of women have better lower body strength... my personal goal this year has been to be able to do unaided pull-ups which I've recently achieved :)

Pupsiecola · 06/07/2018 12:21

That's quite an achievement TS. It's also on my list of goals. Trouble is I'm heavy, and my right shoulder has wear and tear and causes me jip sometimes. In fact it's bad at the moment from 20kg military presses on Tuesday morning. So I don't know if I will ever be able to do an unaided pull-up. I have done one bodyweight squat though :-)

miffy2 · 06/07/2018 13:11

Another one here enjoying being back exercising. I joined a small local gym and now that I am on holiday from work I am going around 5 times a week. 3 days a week are strength + conditioning and the other 3 are conditioning (cardio). I love lifting and missed it over the past year. My bench press record was 55kg, but just three lifts. Back when I was really strong. Managed 40kg the other morning and am delighted with that, and the fact that I an now do full pushups again. However unaided pull-ups I fear will never be doable! I am working hard on the food side of things; I find calorie counting and macros really confusing (plus they make me focus too much on my next meal) so instead I am intermittent fasting (16:8) and using the hand sizes as a guideline - palm of protein, fist of carbs, handful of greens and a thumb of fats :)

Pupsiecola · 06/07/2018 14:17

Wow miffy that's a very impression bench weight! Well done for getting back to it.

miffy2 · 06/07/2018 16:18

I remember it with fondness LOL. Not sure I will see that weight again for a while...Bench press is my favourite exercise; burpees my least favourite Grin

mintmagnummm · 06/07/2018 16:27

U lot are making me feel exhausted just by reading about your exercises! Doesn't help that it's about 30 degrees!

Pupsiecola · 06/07/2018 16:44

I love anything shoulders Miffy. But my right shoulder isn't so sure Hmm

mintmagnummm · 06/07/2018 18:15

Why didn't I order the 1 litre size bioderma shower oil!! I love it!

mintmagnummm · 06/07/2018 19:20

Ladies if I was to get the GOW vitamin c serum would that need to go under or over my mineral 89? Or would I just use one? What about the night I use azelaic acid?

RenardeRenarde · 06/07/2018 19:32

Bagel PM me an address and I’ll post it out, no need to give me anything it’s only taking up space.
