Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a lightbulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Tantric - isn't the oat stuff good?! It feels like I'm drinking double cream Grin

EnidButton · 04/07/2018 02:19

Which oat drink are you both having? Apparently Innocent (the smoothie people) have brought some out. I want to try that when I can find it.

Shop · 04/07/2018 06:50

Bagel of course I don’t mind! PM me your address and i’ll get some sent to you x

Shop · 04/07/2018 06:51

Oops, went from texting to mums netting excuse the x Grin

mintmagnummm · 04/07/2018 11:43

Just placed an order with escentual as they are doing their offer on French pharmacy so got my bioderma, Vichy spray and mineral 89 plus a small size of the bioderma shower oil to try (baaaa)

Shop · 04/07/2018 12:43

mint that’s very restrained! I went straight for the litre size. Luckily I like it so far Grin

Pupsiecola · 04/07/2018 13:35

Thanks JDSTER. That was the picture that inspired me to buy both of the Biores. One more question (sorry). How do pick which of the two to wear?

mintmagnummm · 04/07/2018 14:47

Shop I know lol, very unlike me! 😉

TantricTwist · 04/07/2018 17:42

Olli it's just such a good replacement thanks for the recommendation.
I spoke to a couple of people at work who also drink substitutes and one really rates Sainsburys Oat Milk and the other loves soy milk and said ASDA can do it quite cheaply. But I'm not a fan at all of Soya milk bleurgh.

TantricTwist · 04/07/2018 17:44

Bagel Neutrogena is pretty good from what I've tried out over the years esp for oilier skin, its very popular in the US.

mintmagnummm · 04/07/2018 17:48

Has anyone tried bumble and bumble invisible oil shampoo? I love the primer spray thanks to pupsie and am really considering the shampoo 🤔

TantricTwist · 04/07/2018 20:36

I just want to say that I really do not like Paula's choice 1% retinol.

Shop · 04/07/2018 20:52

Tant what don’t you like about it?

banivani · 04/07/2018 21:12

The Oatly barista milk must be the one called Ikaffe in Sweden - it really is the best milk substitute around for coffee and tea, so creamy! And it doesn’t taste of porridge like regular oat milk. It took off here this past year. First it has a small spot in the milk section and now the shops have to dedicate whole shelving sections to it, haha.

Well, last day on holiday I managed to get spectacularly sunburned due to using a Croatian sun milk which must have been much less water resistant then the ones I’d brought from home. Lesson learned. I was wearing a halter neck bikini and now have that shape down my front. Slightly lopsided. 🙄

Looked at my skin in the mirror at home in daylight and after my minimal holiday routine and sun I seem less blackheady around the nose but worse around the chin/mouth. I am a face toucher which might be contributing of course. 🤔

PickledHoneybuzzard · 04/07/2018 21:52

bani do you have the mango Oatly in Sweden ? The only place I've seen it in the UK is Ikea, which is too far to go for a drink!!

Tsmummy08 · 04/07/2018 22:05

Shop I wouldn't use tret and retinol the day after each other - use either or...

Yay! I've caught up! Have been enjoying all the talk of SPF... I'm still loving Frezyderm, have RPd but also use Biore especially first thing for school run/gym etc I just don't think it's as effective as Frezy with all the actives I use...

Speaking of which I've ditched my Retirides/tret during this weather as I don't want to risk further skin damage. Still looking for an alternative to use - I'm considering using Verso eye serum all over my face - but that seems rather profligate, someone talk me down and direct me towards something else!!! Pestle and Mortar oil maybe??

EnidButton · 04/07/2018 23:03

After complaint about being more oily than usual I seem to have adjusted and not oily at all atm. It's far too hot for me though. I'm staying in the shade when outside. Still have the slightest tint of a pale tan though which is unheard of for me so the sun must be terribly strong. So be very careful with any chemical exfoliants etc.

banivani · 04/07/2018 23:05

pickled I do think so - but I’m normally not an Oatly fan. Think my husband bought mango Oatly on occasion though if memory serves ... 🤔 we must have all the Oatlys here though I suppose Smile

Tsmummy08 · 05/07/2018 07:26

Pupsie Good to hear that you're still enjoying your morning HIIT/Metcon classes - I've got one more week of "bulking" then start cutting. I'm actually looking forward to getting some cardio back into my routine... remind me I said this in a few weeks! I've NOT enjoyed the GVT/heavy leg program I've been on - honestly, I think it's been too much volume and frequency for a woman with my hormone profile i.e. perimenopausal/one functioning ovary but that's probably a conversation for elsewhere...

zoClueless · 05/07/2018 07:50

Just a quick one to say hello, I'm still here and trying to keep up. Hope everyone is well.

I've not been contributing as haven't really had a chance to do much - it's on my list to sit and look up some Vit C options but haven't got round to it (work, diy, various other bits getting in the way)... I'll get there eventually!

Pupsiecola · 05/07/2018 09:49

I have Plenish almond milk (I don't drink tea or coffee but I will have it with porridge or protein shakes lol).

TS I really like the P&M oil. I am using it every other night and it's absolutely fine and not causing the redness/flakiness/itching I've had with other ones I've tried. As a side note, should I look to be using it every night?

I did GVT for a bit. I didn't enjoy it. Out of interest do you track your calories. I am at the moment. I just try to hit calories and protein and figure that if I get those carbs and fats won't matter too much. I'm having 1700 a day at the moment. My goal is fat loss. I am loving my training but I feel I want to ditch some fluff (as usual). I feel that with my frame if I build muscle and don't drop fat (so hard to do both at the same time!) I look bigger. I have some decent muscle now. I want to see it! I'd love to know more about how you're approaching your cut!

JDSTER · 05/07/2018 10:40

TS I’m using medik 8 Crystal Retinal highest strength. Finished differin and wanted a change.
pupsie I use brightening Biore more often because I like it more than watery one. Particularly under makeup, brightening gives a lovely finish

Pupsiecola · 05/07/2018 11:21

Thanks JD. I wish they'd do bigger sizes!!

mintmagnummm · 05/07/2018 11:45

Just an update if any of you are interested....GOW azelaic acid gets a 👍🏻 from me. Been using long enough now to say I like!

BagelGoesWalking · 05/07/2018 11:57

That's good to hear mint. Glad it's working for you.
I've got some for my DD to try when she gets back from her holiday. She's been on antibiotics for her acne for 4 months now and I'd really like her not to be on them for much longer. Hoping Azelaic and Mandelic might do the trick.
