Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a lightbulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Thanks everyone for the self tan advice, I feel inspired to just go for it.

Shop · 02/07/2018 22:29

miffy have you tried the he Cocoa Brown gradual tanner? It’s my all time favourite

TantricTwist · 02/07/2018 22:57

Thanks Pupsie. I always read Sali's column but had forgotton about these. I pretty much had the whitest legs at the weekend out of all my friends, I wasnt that bothered but I'm going on holiday soon and no way can I be walking around that pale by the pool.

miffy2 · 02/07/2018 22:59

Thanks for the links, Pupsie. I think the isle of paradise drops are next on my list to try.

Shop, I actually haven’t tried the gradual tanner from Cocoa Brown. Must pick some up in the supermarket later this week!

SophieLion · 03/07/2018 08:07

Well done on all the exercise sessions Pupsie! If you go to a hotel with a gym you could always go on the treadmill or cross trainer there.

Tant, perhaps you could get one of those spray tans if you're not sure how well you will apply it? Not done one myself

Pupsiecola · 03/07/2018 08:50

Thanks Sophie. I may do, but I prefer some bodyweight HIIT workouts. The Bodycoach's YT channel is always very good :-)

Pupsiecola · 03/07/2018 10:32

OMG @ the Biore 😍😍😍

  1. can I wear it in the height of summer (aka now)
  2. can one buy bigger bottles?

Frezyderm been relegated to the boys' bathroom!

mintmagnummm · 03/07/2018 12:38

Pupsie I'm sorry I know you have shown us before but which biore is it your using? Also is it a chemical spf?
I'm still struggling 😭

JDSTER · 03/07/2018 13:35

pupsie I am delighted. I’ve been consistently banging on how much I love this SPF Grin. Yes it’s chemical mint. It’s UV brightening one in pink bottle. I think the ingredients list was linked for you not long ago and you dismissed it.

mintmagnummm · 03/07/2018 13:59

JDSTER "you dismissed it" 😂 yep that sounds like me 😬

miffy2 · 03/07/2018 15:31

I have been using the body shop spf again this week and remembering how much I love it, especially during the warmer months. I have two tubes left so I will have to go bargain-hunting when I go to Spain (they, like many other countries EXCEPT Ireland, have regular sales in store).

TantricTwist · 03/07/2018 18:13

miffy I tested the BS SPF the other day and really like the consistency. I have decided to stick to a gentle tan and just use a gradual tanning moisturiser as per usual.
Trying to decide which expensive fake tan to use and then rubbing it on with a mitt is just too much for me to cope with Blush (plus I dont fancy orange bed sheets as mine are all crisp white Egyptian cotton due to my getting so hot at night even in winter)
I might be a CF however and apply some cheap St Moritz on the first night of my holiday so I tan overnight Grin
I have veins showing through on my cheeks Hmm so keeping my skincare routine active free atm.

TantricTwist · 03/07/2018 18:16

Oh yes I knew I wanted to come on to say something specific.

I bought the Oatly milk from waitrose and it tastes great in Tea Brew
I think Olli and someone else was mentioning how it was their favourite and I concur.

mintmagnummm · 03/07/2018 18:31

Sophie how long did it take your skin to adjust to not moisturising at night? And did your skin look quite dehydrated at first?

Pupsiecola · 03/07/2018 18:38

JDSTER do you use the Biore exclusively or are there instances where you don't use it?

JDSTER · 03/07/2018 19:19

pusie I have a few on the go. I put this pic up on here a couple of weeks ago. I use LRP if it’s high UV, I’m outside a lot on a hot day or on holiday- that sort of thing. I trust their SPF, recommended by dermatologists and others in the know to have excellent filters in them. Certainly not as cosmetically elegant as the Biore ones. LRP spray is for top ups.

BagelGoesWalking · 03/07/2018 19:38

Tantric Is it the Oaty Barista one? I really need to try it as seriously thinking of giving up dairy for a while to see if skin improves (eczema).

And also, what the THE most gentle cleanser ever? Compared to Avène Extremely Gentle Cleanser which I'm still not sure about. I've tried LRP Toleriane Dermo Cleanser. I've pondered CeraVe hydrating Cleanser but some ppl seem to find it drying so don't think it will suit. Should I bite the bullet and get Dr Sam's - is it really, really gentle or is there something else? Thanks.

Shop · 03/07/2018 20:02

bagel if you’re in the uk I can send you a little of my Dr Sam cleanser to try?

Shop · 03/07/2018 20:12

My Escentual order arrived today, got the Bioderma shower oil, Cicabio, cicaplast lip and cicaplast hand, nuxe reve de miel and avene cicalfalte, all new to me except the nuxe.

I have tretinoin 0.025 to start but can’t decide whether to continue my Paulas Choice 1% retinol the other days or stop it altogether.
Still enjoying my Timeless vitamin c and no further breakouts

TantricTwist · 03/07/2018 20:37

Bagel its this Oatly

TantricTwist · 03/07/2018 20:40

Bagel I absolutely love using Dr Sam's Cleanser it ticks every box for me and imho its very gentle.

TantricTwist · 03/07/2018 20:44

Bagel On FB someone was saying that they use this for their eczema and swear by it.

BagelGoesWalking · 04/07/2018 00:24

Shop That's so kind of you! If you really don't mind it would be very helpful. Shall I PM you tomorrow?

Tantric I have seen the Neutrogena recommended once before but I never really rated them as a good brand, but I will take a look at the ingredients.

It would be lovely if the Dr Sam suits me as it's a lot more reasonable than some of the others I've seen recommended, like Pai and Dermalogica. Thank you both.

EnidButton · 04/07/2018 00:26

My bioderma oil arrived today. Looking forward to using it again. It's so soothing and my skin definitely looks glowing after a couple of uses.

Essentual wouldn't take the 15% off even though my order hadn't dispatched yet. Never mind.
