Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a lightbulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Could be that a minute of massaging is too much.

SophieLion · 01/07/2018 21:19

Often that initial tightness passes though Mint. As you know I don't use moisturiser and after cleansing my skin can feel a little tight but it passes without me realising and I don't need to use anything else.

Ps am carrying around the little package to post to you! We're a bit in the middle of nowhere here now!

mintmagnummm · 01/07/2018 21:28

Bani I usually massage for a while so my skin is used to that.

Sophie aww bless you, thanks so much. Where are you staying?......it's not the initial tightness it's as the evening goes on my skin just doesn't feel as comfortable as it usually does.

TantricTwist · 01/07/2018 23:59

I love the Dr Sam cleanser, I can't see how it could possibly sting. My skin is clean after but not in the least taut.

I really think it's your eye make up remover mint or an active that is going to near your eyes such as a retinol, vit C etc which is then affecting everything else you are applying because every product known to man seems to be stinging your eyes. My eyes were stinging a while ago and everything I put on made them sting.

I think it was the rubbing action of taking my eye make up off.

EnidButton · 02/07/2018 00:20

Escentual have their 1/3 off French Pharmacy Offer in at the moment.

Damn it that's annoying! I only ordered my shower oil a few hours before that started. I know it's only a fiver but I seem to keep doing that lately and it adds up. I would've bought some other things if it had been on when I ordered too.

mintmagnummm · 02/07/2018 06:12

Tant it's definitely not my eye make up remover, as I said before it's bioderma pink which I've used years. Frezyderm is the only other thing that has stung recently everything else I've used for a while. I get what your saying about the cleanser but just because your skin is fine with it doesn't mean that someone else won't experience issues with it. It's definitely the cleanser because as soon as i take the product over my eyes it happens, I don't use any actives other than azelaic which I don't use every night and have been using this for little while now with no irritation to my eyes on the nights I've used it. I'm sure in time there will be reviews online from others who will not get on with cleanser as not one product suits 100% of people. I am extremely disappointed but what can I do?! Someone else on here said they had slight tingling with the cleanser recently too?! I didn't get any tingling at all, So everyone is different.

mintmagnummm · 02/07/2018 06:15

Also everything known to man seems to be stinging your eyes.... my eyes are incredibly sensitive and lots of things do sting them which is why I know when a product irritates them I know the warning signs! Nothing else I use in my routine at mo stings and I can take everything right over my eyes with no problem. Frezyderm and the Vichy eye m/u remover were the latest culprits but have stopped them.

Ollivander84 · 02/07/2018 13:42

Sam cleanser ordered (baaaaa sheep)
Been to boots today and got a NYX gel pencil liner, cerave hydrating cleanser and a no7 mascara
The post brought revolution pro foundation drops and brush and revolution chocolate elixir glow palette highlight
AND most importantly my new bathroom flooring is going down in both bathrooms Grin

mintmagnummm · 02/07/2018 14:05

What spf does everyone here use on their body??

user1499173618 · 02/07/2018 14:29

Avène 50 spray

PickledHoneybuzzard · 02/07/2018 16:34

Anything Factor 50 or 30 that is sweat and water resistant for sailing/walking/beach. Altruist for every day.

JDSTER · 02/07/2018 16:43

mint shame you’re having no luck with new cleanser. I use LRP SPFs for body (and have face ones although not the most cosmetically elegant I own).

miffy2 · 02/07/2018 16:59

Currently liking the new Vichy water-based spf for body. You need to shake it well before use but there is no white cast and no stickiness.

I also have one on the go from Bioderma, t is a factor 50 oil.

I was looking for a particular NYX eye pencil today, Olli, in a brown shade, but they were sold out. I did however pick up a mini cocoa brown fake tan mousse for my holiday next month and a new one to try out by Iconic London, along with some Primark face flannel mitts for cleansing.

On the way to me by post I have my replacement Clarins foundation, plus a small order from Cult Beauty (Sol de Janeiro shower gel and a new shampoo and conditioner set from Briogeo.

banivani · 02/07/2018 17:44

Well today I bought a heap of creams from a pharmacy in Trogir that makes their own cosmetics - how cool is this. (Time will tell.) I had to ask to see the ingredient lists which where separate but it’s a base of rose water, argan oil, bespanthenol... should have taken photos come to think of it. I went for it because their own-blend insect repellent is really good actually :).

banivani · 02/07/2018 17:46

I also have managed to get two sun burn patches on my back from where my son the useless creature didn’t smear me up properly Angry

Pupsiecola · 02/07/2018 18:29

I've had no other tingling from Dr. Sam's other than that first time. Strange. It definitely makes me skin feel waaaaay less taut and thirsty than any other cleanser/plain water. The only thing I'm not sure about is that I don't quite know how to tell that I've rinsed it all off. I think it's just because I've never used a jelly before?

I really like it though :-) One of my 2 Biore SPFs arrived today too so I'll be trying that tomorrow. Very small bottle!

JDSTER · 02/07/2018 19:01

Which Biore pupsie?

TantricTwist · 02/07/2018 20:27

I'm melting in this heat. I've just got Lancaster, P20 (my absolute favourite body SPF as non of us ever burn with it) and an Ultrasun SPF. I used ultrasun face spf today which is nice and non greasy because luckily I had it in my bag as I forgot to apply any before rushing out the door to work.

I need a nice and easy fake tan to apply to my body before my holiday next month.

I have never used fake tan before only Ambre Solaire and Johnsons gradual tanning moisturisers which are great but I want to step it up.

So any ideas on good beginners fake tan I could try?

SophieLion · 02/07/2018 20:32

Mint, I squally use any SPF50 from the pharmacy. At the moment it's Vichy for kids (as easier just to carry one bottle around).

Tant, no idea re fake tan. Gave up trying that years ago as was so rubbish at applying it. Had a big drip mark down my heel once - not a good look Grin

SophieLion · 02/07/2018 20:33

TantricTwist · 02/07/2018 20:53

Sophie that's exactly why Ive been avoiding it, maybe I should just leave it then

Pupsiecola · 02/07/2018 21:01

Tantric I use Clarins drops for body and for face. I find them the best. Not too smelly, quite subtle and you can add however many you want.

JDSTER this is the one that arrives today...

JDSTER · 02/07/2018 21:51

My favourite pupsie. Don’t be alarmed by the initial whiteness. It blends to a lovely finish, on me anyway.
Tant I really rate St Tropez. An oldie but a goodie. They do a whole range now. I’ve heard the gradual Tanner is very good. I like the mousse which I apply with a tanning mit (you can buy them everywhere). I’m fair skinned and I find it gives a nice natural, non streaky colour.

miffy2 · 02/07/2018 21:58

I used to love St Tropez gradual tan (in the medium to dark even though I am white as snow) but they changed the formula and fragrance and it is not good. :(

My favourite fool-proof tan is Cocoa Brown, It was unvented by an Irish business woman for pale, northern skin (aka those of us who don't want to be tangoed). I love it, I apply it with a proper mitt (velvety, double-sided) and it has a colour to it so you can see where it is going. I always apply some cream to my feet, elbows and knees before the tan and then I give those areas a little wipe afterwards to avoid a dark stain.

The Iconic one I bought today (Iconic Bronze, not Iconic London) is olive-toned so I thought I would give it a bash. Have applied to my upper body tonight and will do the legs after my shower tomorrow. I don't tan naturally and wear spf anyway, but I like to look a bit sun-kissed, so I fake it all the way!

Oh Vita Liberata Body Blur is an instant tan/body makeup that you can wash off. I love it for nights out when I CBA to do the proper tan.

As mentioned above, the only gradual tan I have really liked is US only, by Jergens. I shall be stocking up in October when I go to Chicago.

Pupsiecola · 02/07/2018 22:15

Is the Liberata Body Blur the one Sali Hughes raves about?

On a different note, I started week 4 of my early morning crazy exercise class this morning. I've not missed a session yet; 21 in the bag, 9 to go. I'm still loving it! I am gutted that we have a longer, 2 week break after this round, and THEN I go on holiday for 2 weeks. I will do HIIT in my hotel room every other day though, and swim etc. as usual when I go away.
