Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a lightbulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

My Dr Sam Cleanser arrived this afternoon! Very excited to use it tonight, I’m going to do the same as you Mint single cleanse, one minute.
Fingers crossed no new breakouts for a few days and still using Timeless vitamin c so hopefully I’ve cracked it 😊😊
It’s been so nice this week to use just mascara, brows and bronzer, NO FOUNDATION!!! Never thought I’d see the day

mintmagnummm · 28/06/2018 18:15

Oh lovely shop! Please report back on first impressions

mintmagnummm · 28/06/2018 18:45

Does anyone know a nice orangey smelling body cream?

EnidButton · 28/06/2018 19:27

I don't but that sounds very nice so I'd like to know! I wonder if Soap & Glory do one? They have one that smells of limes and there's an orange shower gel. Not a very sophisticated brand I know but I like some of their body products.

EnidButton · 28/06/2018 19:27

Is bo alright? Was it the Roland R*t talk?

Shop · 28/06/2018 19:37

I think body shop do a satsuma body butter.

mintmagnummm · 28/06/2018 19:40

Enid I'm thinking orange starburst sweets 😋😋

Shop the bs satsuma is nice but not the kind of orange I'm thinking, not that I'm fussy or anything 😂.

I was also wondering about bo I hope all is well!

TantricTwist · 28/06/2018 20:40

The Body Shop has all sorts of lovely smelling body butters I have mango and satsuma ones.

mintmagnummm · 28/06/2018 21:12

The bs satsuma body butter 400mls is on offer, considering it!

TantricTwist · 28/06/2018 23:22

I'm finding that my Bioderma micellar water in the red bottle is taking off my spf very well thank you very much and preventing my skin from the awful sweaty breakouts I've been having in this weather.

Ooo and I pick up my differin tomorrow.

mintmagnummm · 29/06/2018 06:02

Shop how was the cleanser???

SophieLion · 29/06/2018 07:02

L'Occitane might have something which smells orangey Mint.

Congrats on the skin Shop! Mine is slowly improving too. It's a great feeling isn't it?

Can someone describe what type of cleanser the Sam Bunting one is? If jelly like then presumably it's not a creamy one like the LRP Toleriane? Does Bunting generally not approve of double cleansing then?

mintmagnummm · 29/06/2018 08:11

Sophie I love loccitane but they are £££ so would rather find a cheaper one 😬.
The cleanser is meant to be like a jelly that has good slip allowing you to massage it well. Dr Sam thinks you should just do a more thorough single cleanse so 2 pumps (of her cleanser) massaged into skin for 1 minute, I'm planning on counting to 60 in my head while massaging lol. As long as it's massaged well and for long enough it should break down all the oils, make up and spf etc

Thanks Sophie 😊 it’s a great feeling!

So, Dr Sams cleanser, it’s a totally clear gel but not runny like a gel wash might be. I really like the texture. I did the 13 dot technique she demonstrated on her video and massaged for a count of 60, it definitely removed makeup and sunscreen and my skin felt lovely afterwards. Obviously I didn’t test it on a full face of makeup as I’d not got much on so I will let you know when I’ve tried it to remove foundation. I removed my mascara first, which I usually do anyway, but I did take the cleanser all over my eyes as I like to cleanse off any leftover eye makeup remover and there was no stinging or anything.
I used it again this morning but just 1 pump and found it harder to massage for very long although I’m not sure the one minute cleanse is meant for the am too.

mintmagnummm · 29/06/2018 10:48

Thank you shop I can't wait to get mine!!....yes she does recommend the 1 min massage in am too 🙄

TantricTwist · 29/06/2018 11:44

I just went to sniff my Mango and Satsuma BS butters and the Mango one is empty Grin
My DD has obviously been using it on the sly.
Not sure why she hasn't asked to use it Confused

TantricTwist · 29/06/2018 15:58

I'm trying out the Body Shop SPF50 today, it goes on quite nicely actually and no white cast.

miffy2 · 29/06/2018 16:25

Tantric I dug out a tube of TBS spf this week too. It feels so mcuh lighter that then others I have in rotation. I like wearing it under makeup this time of year, when I am not outdoors too long and cleanse my face early enough in the evening (it is so so hot here that my makeup and spf are running down my face by mid-afternoon anyway).

I started off my summer holidays today with a facial, using Image skincare. I really like their Vital C cleanser and the SPF so it was nice to try out some of the other items in the range. My face feels silky smooth and I almost fell asleep during it, so that was nice!

TantricTwist · 29/06/2018 17:40

That sounds lovely Miffy the facial. I could do with a facial and massage actually. Well my skin hasn't gone blotchy or spotty yet from TBS Spf which is good.

ChesterBelloc · 29/06/2018 21:00

I'm beginning to think that the Frezyderm might be giving me MORE blackheads! Confused Today I spied some on my forehead (wtf?!), which is where I most often apply it, and most generously (tho not overly so). And I now have patches of them (or perhaps just enlarged pores...?) either side of my nose. Gah.

So I think I want to try something else; but I don't have the budget to experiment with lots of different types. So if anyone can recommend something for normal skin that DOES NOT BLOCK/CLOG PORES, please please do!

(Am also considering investing in some PC BHA, and/or a proper extraction facial...)

ChesterBelloc · 29/06/2018 21:31

...though could it be the Hada Labo Premium lotion...? Am also slathering that on twice a day...Hmm

I wish one could just go for a skin diagnostic session with a dermatologist on the High Street! Far simpler than all this DIY self-diagnosis, for me at least :-/

Biologifemini · 29/06/2018 21:42

All SPFs, by their chemistry, are going to be pore clogging to an extent. They are oil soluable - if they are ‘chemical’, or grainy and can physically get into the pores, if they are mineral. You would be better off using a slightly lower SPF and really cleansing properly of an evening when you take it off. It might stop the blackheads from forming.

ChesterBelloc · 29/06/2018 22:23

I think I have been cleansing properly... Tho I didn't wait the requisite period of time between starting using the Hado Labo and then adding the Frezyderm - silly me.

banivani · 29/06/2018 22:57

Well my biggest skincare trouble atm are the mosquito bites. 15 on my left upper arm alone. Apart from an insect repellent and something for the itching I asked the chemist for something antibacterial since we’re drawing blood here, and she sold me a little bottle of propolis, calendula and tea tree in propylene glycol. Smells nice. I was thinking more like sudocrem but alrighty then. Apart from melasma and so on I haven’t been having any big acne while on holiday. I think my skin responds well to sun and sea tbh. Have been getting some small spots. Can’t see my blackheads due to poor lighting where mirror is and also freckles. Possibly people in days of yore with no mirrors felt great and gorgeous all the time?
