Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a lightbulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Perfect sense Smile Thank you Mint.

Bluebell9 · 27/06/2018 13:27

Mint I said I would report back to you about the Neutrogena Pure and Free Liquid SPF. It arrived from America yesterday so I used it this morning. Its very runny, but it does say its a liquid.
It needs to be rubbed in well and did leave a white cast on my skin but as I apply foundation over it, that doesnt matter too much for me. Its not too shiny and my foundation went over it well.
I'll see how I get on with it over the next few weeks.

mintmagnummm · 27/06/2018 14:32

Thank you bluebell. I'm not a big fan of runny spf's as I find they don't last very long at all (if you use the recommended amount!) keep me posted though and I hope it works out well for you!

mintmagnummm · 27/06/2018 14:32

Bo are you ok? Am getting a little worried now

mintmagnummm · 27/06/2018 14:35

Can I ask a personal question (yes a other one!) have any of you ever taken anti depressants? If so do you mind me asking which ones and whether they helped? Am feeling a little low at the moment and my moods seem to be erratic (counselling etc hasn't worked for me) I don't want to feel this way. Depression and mental illness runs in my family so wonder if it's possible to be hereditary??

banivani · 27/06/2018 16:23

Mint, mental health issues are absolutely something that runs in families but I suppose it can be difficult sometimes to distinguish nature from nurture. Several
members of my family have taken antidepressants, I was in the zone too but opted out as I was pregnant at the time. You need to speak to a doctor.

mintmagnummm · 27/06/2018 16:40

Bani my gp is aware of my tendencies but she also knows how sensitive I am to medications. I'm already on co dydramol and amitriptyline daily for my fibromyalgia (tried lots of other things and these are the only two that don't give me unwanted side effects) I have had a couple of different antidepressants in the past, I remember one being called citalopram (not sure on spelling) but that gave me side effects so had to come off.

Pupsiecola · 27/06/2018 17:48

Mint I really think it's unwise to ask about other people's experiences with different medications on an internet forum, especially with regards mental health issues, and especially if you have sensitivities with regards contraindications. If you're feeling low perhaps you should make an appointment to see your GP.

EnidButton · 27/06/2018 18:20

mint Flowers It can absolutely be hereditary imo. Very sorry you're feeling so down. It's an awful horrible thing. I have had them a long time ago and didn't get on with them so I don't want to advise you as they could be what you need. We're all different.
The very best thing to do is to go to a gp that you know and tell them how you feel and explain your worries about side effects etc. They could give you a very low dose to start off with or make other suggestions that could help.
I don't know what info is available but Mind are an excellent charity that might have some info on their site that could help you decide what to do next. Hang on in there, you're not alone. We care. x

TantricTwist · 27/06/2018 18:48

Mint go to the mental health forum on MN via the main Talk menu, theres loads of advice on there.

It usually takes about 3 months for the chemicals in your brain to balance themselves out when you start taking anti depressants.

During that time people might suffer the following - cant sleep, hallucinate, lose their appetite.

TantricTwist · 27/06/2018 18:48

Obvs go to your GP first

TantricTwist · 27/06/2018 18:51

Mint no I haven't received my Dr Sam cleanser yet but I only ordered it a few days ago so expect it won't be quick as it's her first product and there are probably logistic teething problems esp if it's really popular.

PickledHoneybuzzard · 27/06/2018 18:54

Mint really do go to your gp. You may find that just talking about the situation helps you get a handle on it.
I've had to do this recently and I'm so pleased I did.
Put your wellbeing first.

SophieLion · 27/06/2018 19:26

Mint I've no idea I'm afraid but Thanks

mintmagnummm · 27/06/2018 21:02

Thanks for your kind words. I only asked on here because I felt like we all had a 'friendship' which sounds odd as we don't know each other but hopefully you know what I mean?
I've had depression episodes since I was very young, my family know, my gp knows, I was just asking if any of you had suffered and if anything helped.
Pupsie I'm sure u meant well but your response came across as a little harsh if I'm honest, apologies if I've misunderstood. As I said I was just asking on here as we have all formed some kind of 'friendship'
I'm not in a dark place, I'm definitely not suicidal or anything extreme like that, I have an amazing fiancé and son, I'm very happy and content but have just been feeling a bit low lately and tbh I'm wondering if it's my hormones (although blood tests show my hormones are fine) but I'm approaching 37 and my periods are messed up so did think it could be linked. Anyway let's not discuss this anymore and move on to all things beauty again 😊

EnidButton · 27/06/2018 21:06

Totally know what you mean Mint we do kind of know each other by now. Brew (

mintmagnummm · 27/06/2018 21:28

Thank you Enid xx
Oh I actually do have some evening primrose capsules here, maybe I'll start them and see, thanks again 💐

mintmagnummm · 28/06/2018 06:08

Feel like I have the start of a migraine! It's around my ovulation time so definitely hormones this time!

banivani · 28/06/2018 09:17

Well I seem to have developed nog melasma patches around my mouth. 🙄 probably I keep touching my skin there and removing the sunscreen.

Pupsiecola · 28/06/2018 10:05

Sorry to hear that Bani. I'm sure I do that too. It's hard not to isn't it!

Hopeing my Dr. Sam cleanser arrives today. I've never used a jelly one so I'm curious.

I'm really liking the Pestle & Mortar retinol oil and am tolerating it well every other night. I did wonder if that's what's causing spots on my nose, but I think it's more likely to be SPF. I'm trying a Eucerin one atm but I'm looking forward to receiving my 3 from Japan.

mintmagnummm · 28/06/2018 10:41

Apparently there have been problems dispatching the dr Sam cleanser so delivery taking longer than they hoped. I'm hoping it arrives soon though

mintmagnummm · 28/06/2018 12:58

Just got an email saying the cleanser has been shipped now woo hoo

TantricTwist · 28/06/2018 15:37

Me too Mint yay, I'm actually really excited to use this new cleanser for some reason. I have high hopes.

I used moisturiser under my SPF today and my face appears much less blotchy so I'm going to stick to doing that from now on.

mintmagnummm · 28/06/2018 16:31

Tant me too!! I'm not going to double cleanse either, just going to do 2 pumps and massage for 1 minute like she recommends, then 1 pump in the am. What moisturiser are you using under the spf?

TantricTwist · 28/06/2018 17:04

Just my LRP toleraine fluide non oily
