Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a lightbulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

I've used the Body Shop one. As I recall it's a dewy finish, not at all primer-like. There must have been something my oily skin didn't like, can't remember what, but I ended up using it up on my kids.

Tsmummy08 · 24/06/2018 11:17

Chester Yes I've used that BS one too - it didn't seem as effective as the Biore water essence that it's often likened to, and there are a few reviews online saying it didn't prevent burning so I've not repurchased.

ChesterBelloc · 24/06/2018 12:32

Hmm yes, having read a few more reviews, some people say they've burnt whilst wearing it - not good news for me, as a fair-skinned blue-eyed person who can burn in England on a cloudy day in April Confused

mintmagnummm · 24/06/2018 13:06

What are you looking for in an spf Chester? And have you already tried different ones?

JDSTER · 24/06/2018 14:18

Ts yes Vichy Vit C should be refrigerated, it’ll keep longer that way.

shop interesting that Dr Sam has got her own cleanser now. She was fed up of cleansers she liked being discontinued, she says. It’s £16 +p&p for 200ml
Ingredients here: Aqua (Water), PEG-6 Caprylic/Capric Glycerides, PEG-7 Glyceryl Cocoate, Poloxamer 188, Ammonium Acryloyldimethyltaurate/VP Copolymer, Polysorbate 20, Allantoin, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice Powder, Phenoxyethanol, Tocopheryl Acetate, Citric Acid, Sodium Hydroxymethylglycinate, Disodium EDTA, BHT.

ChesterBelloc · 24/06/2018 14:25

mint - High SPF/UVA rating (that actually works), quick and easy to apply, doesn't leave me white/shiny, and doesn't sting my eyes if some manages to migrate down my face!

I love everything about the Frezyderm apart from the fact that it really hurts a lot, for a long time, if it gets near my eyes Confused

Pupsiecola · 24/06/2018 14:32

Just came on to say about Dr Sam's cleanser. Annoyingly I bought an LRP Toleriane yesterday. It's not perfect for me but I really need to double cleanse at this time of year with SPF50.

Where is Bo? I'm worried she has actually hidden the thread after the rats 🤔. Come back Bo!

TantricTwist · 24/06/2018 15:29

I have just ordered one of Sam Buntings new Cleansers which I'm really looking forward to using because she and I both loved the LRP physiological gel that was discontinued.

Her site is really cool and I was able to pay online via my apple pay thingy on my phone.

mintmagnummm · 24/06/2018 15:44

Chester that's exactly what I'm looking for too! And I completely agree about the frezyderm!

Bo come back otherwise I will tag you with lots of rattle pics 😂

mintmagnummm · 24/06/2018 16:06

Tant I just ordered one too! Hoping it will eliminate the need for my ttdo balm and avene cleanser. In theory it should be more cost effective and quicker! I just hope it does remove make up and spf etc as promised

mintmagnummm · 24/06/2018 16:11

As long as this new spf doesn't clog my pores or break me out in time I think I might like it! Was expecting my skin to be super oily in this heat but surprisingly it's not too bad! Not matte but definitely not as bad as it has been with other products. Here's hoping!!

lilcolibri · 24/06/2018 16:29

Hi /wave.

I posted a few months ago (a year maybe??) about wanting to try actives with my acne. Anyway, I followed the advice! and just sorted my basic routine out first.

I cleanse with LRP toleriane and CosRX good morning gel (I prefer the gel and rarely use LRP). I don't wear make up but do wear SPF - the Bioderma SPF 50 with the squirty bottle... can't remember the name.

I moisturise with LRP toleriane and Eucerin. It has reduced the redness overall of my acne but I am still getting spots every month on my chin and forehead.

I don't REALLY want to dive into actives or buy many products. What would you suggest? I'm pretty happy with my routine and don't want a million products... I'm also wary of the actives now it just seems like an addiction waiting to happen.

Thanks for any advice,

JDSTER · 24/06/2018 17:10

Wearing frezyderm today and my eyes are so sore! I look forward to feedback tant and mint on Dr Sam cleanser.

miffy2 · 24/06/2018 18:41

Also looking forward to reviews of Dr Sam's cleanser! One of my favourite parts of my PM routine is cleansing. I have a 'number' of cleansers lined up or in use but can always appreciate another one :)

JDSTER · 24/06/2018 19:00

Grinmiffy I have a ‘number’ of cleansers too and, like you, can always appreciate another one.

miffy2 · 24/06/2018 19:08

Cleansers can be a thing of beauty Grin.

My current favourites are Kate Somerville cold cream, Image Vital C, Dermalogica essential cleansing solution, cerave hydrating (US version), and then DHC oil too. Oh and Emma Hardie balm. Eeeeek.

TantricTwist · 24/06/2018 19:27

I only really have EH, TTDO, LRP toleraine and LE neither of which I like much, bioderma micellar water, omorvicza mud cleanser and my Murad face wash.

Which I guess is more than a few but doesnt seem like it.
I've got a rose REN one I dont much like and an M&S pure one I've never even tried Blush

PickledHoneybuzzard · 24/06/2018 19:36

Hi lilcolibri I don't have any advice for you but didn't want you to go unanswered. (Secretly I'm luring you into actives addiction 😁😁😂).

banivani · 24/06/2018 21:51

Lilcolibri - you don’t HAVE to do anything of course. :) have you tried using benzoyl peroxide for the spots?

Bluebell9 · 25/06/2018 11:03

lilcolibri I've started using GOW Azleiac Acid to help clear my skin. Its been nearly 3 weeks now and my skin seems clearer but a bit dryer.

Pupsiecola · 25/06/2018 12:38

What do you guys do in the following scenario:-

You're going to the office/wherever, and aren't likely to be outdoors for more than a minute.
You come home from work and go for an hour's walk at 5ish.

You have make up on. Would you even bother with SPF until you go out for a stroll? Then put it on over make up?

This is me today. I've slathered my face with SPF but given that in this heat we're meant to reapply every 2 to 3 hours I don't see the point in applying first thing...

SophieLion · 25/06/2018 15:01

Pupsie, I would put SPF on first thing in AM then make-up and then if I was going to be inside for rest of day then I would only reapply at 5pm before going for walk (I'm a bit over the top sometimes with SPF though). UVA rays penetrate glass so even if driving or travelling by bus or train next to window then one could argue it's best to have on SPF.

Not quite sure about the SPF over make-up part though...

mintmagnummm · 25/06/2018 15:51

I agree with Sophie and that's what I'd do also, but I'm really unsure about over make up. I know there are sprays you can use for this but I've never tried one.

EnidButton · 25/06/2018 16:19

lil If your acne is regular I'd advise you go to your GP and ask about antibiotics. Either oral or topical ones. They take a couple of months to start doing anything but once they have, you could then look into using actives as a preventative. It's difficult to know what your skin needs when it feels like you're fighting it. I had mild to moderate acne and took antibiotics for it. They worked really well. When I got it mildly a few years later, due to hormonal changes), I couldn't have oral ones so was given Zineryt (topical mild antibiotic with zinc, prescription only), to apply to the problem area. Worked very well. I now have some in all the time in case of flare ups and apply to individual spots. Dries them up overnight or hurries them along ten times faster than they'd take on their own. Dietary changes have also helped hugely for me.

Just speaking from personal experience and we all vary obviously but trying actives/acids on my skin when I had spots made it worse. I found being gentler and consistent worked better.

Just my tuppence worth. Smile I had masses of brain fog yesterday so might've misread your post and I'm talking balls. Ignore if so. Grin

SophieLion · 25/06/2018 16:47

Hi Lilcolibri, I also get spots/acne and my chin is the worst place. I also had on forehead, jawline, cheeks.

I'm currently seeing a dermatologist. Noted you aren't interested in actives but I will say that one of the first things my derm said was to stop using LRP toleriane cleanser. She didn't like it at all! She said it was difficult to get off properly (several posters on here also said it left a film on their skin). Once I stopped using it (and a myriad of other creams), I realised that I had had some kind of film on my skin all the time and that this had been blocking my pores and causing spots.
