Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a lightbulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

I'm really sorry if this has been done before but could someone please make a list of mineral face spf's that are available in the UK and that are ok for daily wear aswell as on holiday? I know I'm a pest, but I'd really appreciate it so I can take a screen shot and keep the list for future reference. This is the one thing left in my routine I really need to find! I'm desperate now. Thank you in advance 💐

TantricTwist · 23/06/2018 18:03

Isn't there a list of SPF's in the main thingy above that Bo has written out?

mintmagnummm · 23/06/2018 18:07

I don't remember seeing a list of all mineral facial spf's 🤔 I am losing my mind lately tho, fibro fog maybe? Or just age and hot weather!

TantricTwist · 23/06/2018 18:14

tbh I have no clue what the difference is between a chemical or mineral sunscreen Confused

What are the lrp antiohelios and ultrasun spf? any idea?

MrMeeseeks · 23/06/2018 18:23

Hi all, I've been lurking for a while and when I read this guide to sunscreens earlier, I thought of you! It was an email I had from Victoria Health. You may have seen it but if not, here you go: www.victoriahealth.com/editorial/sun-protection-the-ultimate-guide-to-spf

TantricTwist · 23/06/2018 19:02

Thanks MrMee I am still none the wiser although I think mine are probably physical then as they have a white cast which is good.

mintmagnummm · 23/06/2018 19:37

Tant those two you mentioned are chemical. Mineral spf's will only ever have zinc oxide, titanium dioxide or a combination of the two.

mintmagnummm · 23/06/2018 19:39

Some use mineral and chemical in their products but obviously they aren't 100% mineral

mintmagnummm · 23/06/2018 19:42

Thanks mr! May try the Is clinical one they recommend

mintmagnummm · 23/06/2018 19:56

Hmm not so sure now as just read some reviews saying they burned while using that one....

EnidButton · 23/06/2018 22:50

Tant I really like that top! Love that that style and midi dresses with sleeves (!) are in this Summer. Top not in my size sadly but I'll keep an eye out for that kind of thing. My plan is to grab a few things whilst they're around in case next summer the shops are back to mini/spaghetti straps/backless/tents etc.

I have a sore little pea lump on my earlobe. I thought the top lip was the most painful place for a cystic type spot but nope. It's skin coloured so ignoring it with the occasional dab of zineryt.

I need to repurchase bioderma shower oil. Ran out last week and lower legs are a bit itchy without it. Even when moisturised with Aveeno. It's a definite permanent one in my collection (?) now.

Mint my brain fog is worse when it's/I'm hot. It's my blood pressure dropping that does it I think. Cold compress to the base of your skull might help a bit when you have a flare up, especially if it's with a headache too.

Hope everyone's having a nice weekend. 💗🍦🍓

nightwispa · 23/06/2018 23:18

Thanks @Tantric! Will check out that bog and see if there's any hope for my skin!

nightwispa · 23/06/2018 23:19

I meant blog obviously!

mintmagnummm · 24/06/2018 02:04

Thank you Enid a cold compress sounds like bliss at the moment! 2am and I'm awake sweating!

mintmagnummm · 24/06/2018 02:11

Random question (it's middle of night what do you expect lol what toothpaste do you all use? I want an sls free one but I want fluoride in it. Using ultradex at the mo which I really like but for some strange reason I feel like I'm getting more plaque with it! Used sensodyne strong and bright before this but not keen.

Shop · 24/06/2018 06:38

Just seen Dr Sam Bunting has released her own cleanser, her website mentions leave on actives coming soon.

Fluffycloudland77 · 24/06/2018 07:13

Last night I put TO buffet with copper on, then the EUK.

About an 2 hour later I wiped everything off and put lrp effaclar duo on. I look much better this morning.

I love the effect of the buffet with copper though so I’m thinking of applying two drops not 4 at night. Then lrp?.

Maybe my skin just doesn’t like antioxidants?, it didn’t like Reservatrol or vitamin c. Is that even possible?.

MrMeeseeks · 24/06/2018 07:18

I find Frezyderm absolutely kills my eyes so I've put that to one side for now. I'm oily and use Biore Watery Essence and stay in the shade as much as possible, but that won't be easy during the school holidays with three young children capering about. My absolute favourite is Paula's Choice Resist Anti-Aging Moisturiser SPF 30 - doesn't sting and has a light tint which suits me, but I need higher protection since I'm using tretinoin. Good for winter.

I thought the comparison between SPF 30 and 50 was interesting in that feature.

Tsmummy08 · 24/06/2018 08:20

Mint Yes I've used it (SC Sheer Mineral Defence), hated it, and have ranted about it on here several times...

I'll happily send you a sample... I'm keeping it for festival body use because it's probably very effective and comes in a small bottle but looks fucking awful on my face! I bought it because I saw SH recommend it for festivals, bought it, then realised she'd recommended the tinted version Confused

Tsmummy08 · 24/06/2018 08:29

Enid Thank you for the encouragement to Footner - I have lovely smooth feet!! Although I won't be using it during midsummer again, I felt a bit odd wearing trainers in the sunshine for a week Grin

Bo Did you ever get round to using your A313? I held back from buying because some reviews talked about a vaseline-like consistency which didn't sound appealing! I've carried on with my tret as the Frezyderm has been doing a reasonable job but with the sun we're expecting this week, I may have to switch to an alternative now....

Have purchased the Vichy vit C as GOW is still OOS - does it have to be refrigerated?

SophieLion · 24/06/2018 09:12

I will read that article now. Thank you.

For my skin, I have concluded that my SPFs which leave a white cast work better for me than the Frezyderm (which I've now gone off completely and am putting on the DCs to use it up!)

SophieLion · 24/06/2018 09:16

Mint, Bo has done the info sheet "which sun screens to use" (title something like that) which is a fantastically comprehensive guide to all the sun screens and filter ingredients to look out for etc. It doesn't name any products but it should help you with a list. I'm afraid I would have no idea where to start with a list as only used a couple.
My derm also mentioned she doesn't like LRP antihelios (or whatever it's called) but not sure if that was in relation to my skin or generally.

mintmagnummm · 24/06/2018 09:27

Thanks tant very kind of you but I've gone of the SC idea now lol, appreciate the offer though.

Sophie, yes I did read that info sheet but as you said there's no products mentioned on it. Was surprised to see that one of the avoid ingredients listed is in frezyerm though!.

Used spf again this morning and had a better result, I warmed it in my finger tips then swiped some on each part of my face, neck and chest then blended it all in. It does need blending a lot as it does go quite white and patchy to start with but keep going and then it disappears, encourages a good massage lol. Takes longer than frezyderm to set so you do have to wait around 10-15 mins before make up but that's ok. I can apply it all over my eyes with no stinging! Anyway I'll continue with it this week (going to have a heatwave so will be good test) and fingers crossed it doesn't break me out or cause any other issues!

ChesterBelloc · 24/06/2018 10:00

Has anyone used the Body Shop Skin Defence SPF 50? It gets good reviews in various places, but I'm wondering what the finish is like..? Presumably not like a primer, Frezyderm-style.

mintmagnummm · 24/06/2018 10:11

I haven't tried it Chester but I think it contains fragrance which is a no no for me unfortunately
