Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a lightbulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Thanks ladies. The reason I asked is that I watched a video of Dr Sam on This Morning (from 2 years ago). She said you needed to reapply every 2 hours if out in the sun. But what if you're not out in the sun? Does the sun wear down the effects of the SPF, ie does the clock start only once you're out in the sun? Or does protection start declining as soon as you've put it on?!

Pupsiecola · 25/06/2018 16:58

JDSTER is it you who recommends the Biore Bright milk SPF50? Can you please link to it so I know I'm buying the right one? Is it okay for high summer (not swimming, just regular life, mooching about etc.)?

TIA

TantricTwist · 25/06/2018 17:05

pupsie Today as I was in all day I just applied Nars TM and once I left the building once I was finished I sprayed on my LRP SPF mist.

TantricTwist · 25/06/2018 17:09

in all day at work that is

Pupsiecola · 25/06/2018 17:11

Is that this one Tantric?

TantricTwist · 25/06/2018 17:28

This one Pupsie LRP SPF Mist

TantricTwist · 25/06/2018 17:29

Just make sure your eyes are shut when you spray it Grin

mintmagnummm · 25/06/2018 17:59

Sophie my skin didn't like lrp toleriane cleanser either, definitely broke me out and felt quite irritating tbh. Am looking forward to receiving the new Sam bunting cleanser! If I like it I can drop the Clinique balm too (which although I do really like, makes my eyes blurry even though I don't actually apply it directly over my eyes! And I fear that balms over time makes my skin congested)

It's only day 3 of new spf but I'm really liking it so far! I just pray I don't start breaking out!
Also I've stopped using eucerin moisturiser at night as it was beginning to feel too much for my skin and it left a tacky dewy finish which it never did at the start! Very odd. Moisturisers seem to be a problem for my skin

EnidButton · 25/06/2018 18:48

Sophie what cleanser do you use please? Sorry if I missed it. I like Lrp tol and don't get any film from it but interested in alternatives.

EnidButton · 25/06/2018 18:50

Yeh, sorry Lil seen you don't want actives. I misread.

SophieLion · 25/06/2018 19:00

Honestly Mint I stopped moisturiser etc about two months ago and I really don't notice any difference in the softness,
Texture, dryness etc etc of my skin. Nothing! Skin feels a little tight after cleansing but then it's fine. IIRC Bo doesn't use moisturiser either (or she wasn't at some some point).

Hi Enid, I'm using. Frezyderm cleanser called Mild Liquid Wash. it's very plain and very boring. Not a balm or a cream and not foaming. It says it has mild surfactants and is designed to protect the skin barrier. Again IIRC Bo queried one the surfactants but it's worked really well for me.

I also used to think LRP toleriane didn't give me a film. Then I stopped using it and realised it had been!! Actually v interesting as since I stopped using creams, I often wake up with some sweat or oil on my face which I NEVER had before. Makes me think my pores were too clogged...

SophieLion · 25/06/2018 19:05

Pupsie, my understanding is that protection starts declining as soon as you put it on. Therefore in the sun (let's say at the beach all day) you should reapply every 2 hours because you are constantly being exposed to strong sunlight. Inside I would say it's ok and just reapply 20/30 mins before you go back outside (eg if a lunchtime break at office).

TantricTwist · 25/06/2018 19:35

Who here is using Differin cream 0.1% as their Retinoid?

Is it super strong?

mintmagnummm · 25/06/2018 19:37

Sophie I'm tempted to not use any moisturiser at night but I worry as I'm very dehydrated and have an impaired barrier. Is the Vichy mineral 89 ok to use with nothing on the top of it??
Or does anyone know a good gel moisturiser that's not sticky/tacky like most gels are? Also hydrating but not oily? 🤔

TantricTwist · 25/06/2018 19:42

I don't always use moisturiser tbh.

Mint I really like Clinique moisture surge which isnt sticky or tacky on me.

Differin 0.1% anyone using it?

JDSTER · 25/06/2018 19:58

Tant be patient Grin. I’ve been using differin as my retinoid. Oily skin but no acne. Used it because it’s a credible retinoid but ? if it has any benefits longer term related to anti ageing (it doesn’t claim to have). I also didn’t find it reduced my oil production, which I hoped it would. Overall my skin is better this last 6 months but I think it’s a combination of things. It can cause some dryness and flakiness. I’ve just finished a tube and now trialling a medik 8 retinoid, for a change.

pupsie yes I’m using and recommend Biore bright milk (it’s the pink one-i buy on eBay from Japan) asianskincareblog.blogspot.com/2017/05/biore-uv-milks-face-perfect-and-bright.html?m=1

Pupsiecola · 25/06/2018 19:58

Does anyone read Sali Hughes's column in the Guardian? Online only shampoos and conditioners this week. She mentioned one brand who partly tailor makes the products to order (scent, no scent, hair type etc.). I might try it when my Pureology is running low.

TantricTwist · 25/06/2018 20:10

Thanks JDster I want to order some to trial as I don't want to splash out over £50 for OTC stuff.

My TO retinoid is not cutting it and I really miss using the Neostrata retinol which left my skin looking good and I feel like I'm seeing the difference already now I've stopped using it, not in a good way.

Ok I will order the differin.

JDSTER · 25/06/2018 21:20

Let us know how you get on Tant. pupsie yes I read that sali Hughes column. I was very interested in the ones she mentioned.

banivani · 25/06/2018 22:31

Well I am enjoying the sun in Croatia and developing a glorious patchy tan for it. I keep slapping on sunscreen but this just means I don’t burn Grin. I like a tan better than pale skin (on me) and happily revel in Swedish standards of beauty in this regard. Admittedly I don’t enjoy the bikini strap white bit but hey ho. It’ll all be gone by September anyhow. My love of v-necks is giving me a leathery cleavage though. Hmm maybe I should start loving a different neckline.

Does anyone know of any skincare products worth getting here? I’ve only browsed very superficially so far.

TantricTwist · 25/06/2018 22:46

Yes will do JDster I should be getting it on Thursday.

Bani are you a GoT fan by any chance Grin

banivani · 25/06/2018 23:19

Wouldn’t say fan-fan at all but do watch it Wink - missed season 1 and haven’t bothered watching it afterwards even though Sean Bean is in it - so not that big a fan. Yes I know - the place is full of GoT stuff! Actually we’re in Trogir which is more we’ll known for filming dr Who episodes haha.

EnidButton · 25/06/2018 23:56

Thanks Sophie Smile I'll have a look at that one.

Ts Forgot to say, glad you liked the footner. :) I must remember to apply foot cream now to maintain it. It's so messy though!

mintmagnummm · 26/06/2018 06:20

Thanks tant I may get a sample to try as have heard good things

mintmagnummm · 26/06/2018 11:15

I have started to get lots of those little whiteheads on my face which is usually when a product is too heavy/rich for me so I think it's the spf!! 😩😩 I really don't know what to try next!
