Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a lightbulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Mint that is very kind of you but I’m in Sweden so wouldn’t ask it of you. I’ve gone through a small bottle of PC bha this spring and didn’t notice great things so didn’t repurchase/buy the bigger size. I wanted to repurchase the Cosrx bha instead but never got around to it b/c sold out in Swedish shops and bla bla. I agree, I do suspect I need a steady bha routine. One of my problems however is that I don’t do well with routines that aren’t the same every day. So I tend to use the acids every day and overexfoliate and so a bad cycle goes on. Or else I forget. I might try putting up a simple list on the inside of my bathroom cupboard. Monday - bha. Tue - xxx. Wednesday- yyy and so on (can’t even think of what to put atm). Anyway, that is the reason why I never do well with face masks like clay. I keep putting them off and then you need to plan to wash them off bla bla. I like sheet masks for that reason, they can be a bit more spontaneous. :)

Lovely Mint! Where did you book to go (if you don't mind me asking)?

Banivani - honestly I can't remember now if the black spots comments applied to acne prone skin or not. Sorry it's not helpful at all if the only thing I really remember her staying is some connection between vit C and some kind of black spots.
And if I makes you feel better, I used to have lovely skin and now any kind of cream or moisturiser seems to bring out spots so can't really use anything and on a programme of AA and tret to get rid of them.

mintmagnummm · 22/06/2018 12:13

No problem bani.

Sophie we are going to Kos. It's an adult only spa hotel!

ChesterBelloc · 22/06/2018 12:29

Is there much difference (apart from price Hmm) between the PC BHA and TO Salicylic acid (which I bought and have been using sporadically on the very stubborn blackheads on my chin and around my nose)..? Because TO doesn't seem to have done much, and it foams a bit on my skin, which is annoying... but I'm wondering if I actually should just bite the bullet and have an extraction facial (recommendations welcome) to get rid of them, and then start from scratch.

mintmagnummm · 22/06/2018 12:45

If anyone else wants the bha please do say as it's just sitting in my cupboard.

My new spf has arrived so be prepared for me to be moaning on here tomorrow 😂

SophieLion · 22/06/2018 12:48

Never actually been to Kos Mint but heard it's lovely. Am sure you will have a super time. Adult only hotel sounds so appealing right now! (School finished for the summer today). And good luck with the SPF

banivani · 22/06/2018 13:11

Chester - I believe the bha from TO has been reviewed several times in these threads as being meh? Won’t swear to it though, haven’t been keeping up properly. Formulawise I much prefer the PC. TO foamed on the skin in a very annoying way. I’d LOVE an extraction facial and can’t find anyone in Sweden who does them. I think that would truly work/make a difference.

mintmagnummm · 22/06/2018 13:35

Sophie thank you, we have never been to Kos either so fingers crossed! Only 418 days to go 😂

TantricTwist · 22/06/2018 15:16

Chester TO salicylic acid and PC BHA are completely different from each other.
PC is a liquid that you apply to a cotton pad and rub around your face. TO is a wierd gloopy gel that quite frankly you just dab onto spots, it is not an acid exfoliator like the PC.

TantricTwist · 22/06/2018 15:18

At least it doesnt work anything like any other acid exfoliator I've ever used, the TO.

miffy2 · 22/06/2018 16:50

A bit of a weird one today. My pillow case is being stained blue, and I’m thinking it has to be something I’m applying at night.
I thought it was a blue eye mask I sometimes wear when the mornings start getting very bright and sunny. But I stopped using the eye mask and my fresh pillowcase is blue again.
My evening routine is as follows:
Cleanse with Kate Sommerville cold cream and then cerave or lrp hydrating cleanser.
Follow with hada labo premium HA.

P&M retinoil but not every night.
Kiehls midnight recovery eye cream.
Final cream layer can be one of many. Cerave moisturising lotion/DE lala retro whipped cream/Cerave PM.

the only active really is the retinol. Could this be the culprit? I’ll change my sheets at the weekend and leave that step out for a night or two.

Any other ideas? It’s only been happening in the last two weeks.

JDSTER · 22/06/2018 17:41

chester I agree with Tant about salicylic acids. TO a gel you just apply to an individual spot, unlike PC BHA to be applied as an exfoliating solution on a cotton wool pad. banivani I don’t particularly rate PC BHA. It causes my oily skin to be dry and I don’t think it really helped with SFs. Cosrx BHA didn’t do anything either. A retinoid has worked better in clearing my skin and removal of comedogenic primer and foundation. miffy difficult to know what’s caused staining. It could actually be a combination of products. Maybe get a blue pillowcase WinkGrin

banivani · 22/06/2018 18:00

I am using a retinoid though (the BEauté Pacifique one). Yet my skin has stalled.

SheStoodInTheStorm · 22/06/2018 19:57

@botemp sorry for the delayed response! The acid Was Paula's choice. Lots of angry cystic bumps that didn't go away. Used the whole trial/travel sized bottle. Did not repurchase and have been scared since!

ChesterBelloc · 23/06/2018 09:55

Thanks for thoughts re salicylic acids. I am intending to get the starter Medik8 retinol, so might that help with clearing blackheads..? I don't wear primer, foundation or concealer, just Frezyderm (and even that not every day Confused). Hot cloth cream cleanser most nights.

Will also get googling, as someone must do extraction facials in central/South London! In the meantime, mint, re your kind offer - if no one else wants it, I'd love to give the PC BHA a go, as it sounds a much better product than TO.

ChesterBelloc · 23/06/2018 10:03

Aha! Purity Skin Centre in Clapham (which is quite near me) does a variety of Dermalogica facials, all of which include blackhead extraction "as and where necessary". £70 for 60 minutes, which doesn't seem too bad (given that I'd hope this would be a one-time event).

mintmagnummm · 23/06/2018 10:06

Chester that's absolutely fine. Pm me your address and I'll post it to you early next week.

Used my new spf this morn, absolutely no stinging even around my eyes BUT it took ages to rub in, was quite white, looks dewy and had slight pilling! Am at end of my tether

user1499173618 · 23/06/2018 10:19

Sisley All Day All Year is the best SPF cream.

TantricTwist · 23/06/2018 10:44

What SPF to wear today Hmm

ChesterBelloc · 23/06/2018 11:00

Thanks so much mint, will PM you Thanks

TantricTwist · 23/06/2018 11:31

Have gone for LRP antiohelios AC fluide matt under my Nars TM as am out for a nice family lunch later followed by a long walk no doubt in the sunshine.

nightwispa · 23/06/2018 12:04

Hi lovelies, long time lurker of this thread, first time poster- can you help?

I've got pigmentation spots around my mouth and am noticing my skin becoming bumpy/uneven. I want to go for a chemical peel eventually (heard Obagi blue is great) but are there any products I can use in the meantime to help my skin even out a little bit?

TantricTwist · 23/06/2018 12:20

Hi night I hope this links helps you a bit pigmentation

TantricTwist · 23/06/2018 12:28

I am wearing a gorgeous Boden blouse I bought in the sale for occasions just like this lunch today.
Smart, casual, summery colour on the darker side and a cool yet elegant cut, imho.

I feel great here it is plus it looks so good on hanging in all the right places

mintmagnummm · 23/06/2018 12:55

Has anyone tried the skinceuticals sheer mineral defence spf 50?
