Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a lightbulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

I've tried 4 times to post a pic but for some reason it won't let me 🤔

Shop · 20/06/2018 20:01

mint I tried that spf and couldn’t believe how bad it was! I only use it for mornings when I go for a run then take it off in the shower when I get back.

Has anyone used the Timeless C E Ferulic? I’m trialling it at the moment, only been using it for a week or so but I’ve got a couple of little spots which I haven’t had for quite a while. I’m hoping it’s hormonal as I’d really love a vitamin c in my routine

TantricTwist · 20/06/2018 20:38

What do we think about Caudalie products here?

I havent tried any out yet but have heard good things about them.

JDSTER · 20/06/2018 20:57

mint have you tried any of the heliocare SPFs? Not sure about fragrance though.

mintmagnummm · 20/06/2018 20:59

Shop do you mean the Australian gold one? It's bloody awful isn't it!

JDSTER no I haven't tried any heliocare but I have looked at them and there was definitely something in the ingredients that put me off, it may well have been fragrance.

mrsdane · 20/06/2018 21:30

hi Sophie - I had to go dairy free last year for my daughter and Oatly Barista oat milk is the best substitute for cow's milk. It's a funny colour in tea etc but closest in taste rather than soya/coconut etc. Give it a good shake before use though.

I have DE Vit C eye and TLC Babyfacial from my friend in the States! She also brought the Kate Somerville cleansing cream back too. Will report back.

Shop · 20/06/2018 21:32

mint yep the Australian Gold one.

bonfireheart · 20/06/2018 21:48

Am currently diary free. innocent oat milk was on special offer so tried that, ok in tea, slightly odd in weetabix! Might use it up by making some smoothies.

Fluffycloudland77 · 20/06/2018 21:57

Is lrp cicaplast with spf greasy?.

Also, I tried the ordinary Vit c powder and I’m getting whiteads, should I discontinue? It’s made my skin red and I’ve got loads of little blocked pores near my mouth now.

Ollivander84 · 20/06/2018 22:19

Second oatly barista. I use it sometimes in my protein shakes and it tastes like double cream it's so rich!
My thing at the moment is tea from here, I get the loose stuff and make my own teabags https://birdandblendtea.com/uk_en/

Pupsiecola · 20/06/2018 23:00

My Pestle and Mortar Retinol arrived this morning. First use tonight.

I'm using up my P50 on LRP Vit C/Retinol on the backs of my hands (alternately). Going to do it religiously and see if it makes a difference.

EnidButton · 20/06/2018 23:38

I like the Rude Health coconut drink, oat drink and almond drink. Don't think they call them milk as they're basically just water with a bit of oats, rice or nuts in. Bit expensive for what they are though. Good alternative to dairy.

botemp · 21/06/2018 08:39

FFS rats Shock Freaky little fuckers with theit beady eyes. Just no, hamsters I can acknowledge are but please don't post any pics of rats, I will scream and have to hide this thread.

Yes, yes, it was the Oatly barista onethat I've been told is a good milk substitute in tea/coffee. I only ever have unsweetened almond milk in the house, hate that almoat all of it is sweetened and I'm a bit wary of the GI impact of the grain based milks for myself. I avoid all things coconut due to the high saturated fat content, soy and I don't really get along that well.

Fluffy, most oily/combo skinned people on here use cicaplast as a topical rather than all over as it's quite rich. Is the reason you're looking at the cicaplast with SPF because you currently have a compromised skin barrier/sunburn/you've over-exfoliated and need a dual purpose SPF to tide you over? I'd recommend the Bioderma Cicabio SPF50+ in that case. It does have a bit of a shiny/dewy finish but it's not greasy, lots of soothing ingredients and excellent UVA protection, specifically formulated for helping the skin restore itself. It's a bit green so also neutralises a touch of redness. Tubes are tiny though, you'll go through one in less than a month but it's not expensive.

If you're acne prone L-AA Vit C can cause a lot of purging that can last for months. Since it's hard to dose a powder it may very well be too much, it's hard to say but, personally, I'd probably use something else.

Bo haha, well, orange would certainly be a different look at least! Shock

You are right in remembering that I got the Skinoren from my GP and my impression is that he doesn't have much specialist knowledge in the dermatology area. I did rewatch the Dr Sam video on layering which specifically mentioned layering vit C and AA in the morning but to be honest I can't see how I can fit in the time for another layer to be applied and dry in the morning before work! So, I might give it a go with the duac in the evening.
I'll have a look at some different options, including the melano and GOW ones you mention. How can I tell if a product is L-AA form, if it doesn't specifically mention it should I assume not or are there other tell tale signs in the ingredients lists? (am also going to try google this between emails at work today!)

Ollivander84 · 21/06/2018 09:14

I've developed a small addiction to watching Tati on YouTube. Specifically her PR unboxing and her drugstore coupon ones Blush

Violet18 · 21/06/2018 09:54

No worries @Mint re spf suggestion.

I'm trialling Medik8 3TR at the mo. I was using PC Skin Balancing Antioxidant Serum with retinol (0.03%) as my first retinol. The texture between the two is so different. The Medik8 is more of an oil (jojoba) and my skin was comfortable and looked moisturised a couple of hours after I had applied so I didn't bother with a moisturiser at the end of my routine. The PC is silicone based I think.

My skin was fine this morning despite not moisturising. I think the dehydration I was getting a couple of weeks ago was due to overusing BHA. My skin doesn't seem to like it alternative nights, so I'll reduce use to 2x per week.

I'm also finding the GOW niacinamide quite moisturising too, so minimal amount of moisturiser needed afterwards. I also got brave and layered BHA and niacinamide in the same routine (with a 1.5 hour gap) and I avoided the tightness that I usually get after BHA. Skin handled that fine.

I'm going to stick with these products now and not add anything new for a while Smile

Regarding rodents: hamsters are by far the cutest over rats IMO. Although they can be vicious little beasts!

SophieLion · 21/06/2018 11:14

Can I throw gerbils into the mix? Squirrels without the cute fluffy tail

SophieLion · 21/06/2018 11:51

Thanks all for the oat milk suggestions. We don't have half those brands here - never heard of them actually! Yes a lot have extra sugar Bo so I always try to buy without. Or I could make it myself, I guess! Make almond butter but never tried milk.

mintmagnummm · 21/06/2018 12:03

Stop abusing rats! They are great!

I really wish I hadn't opened this thread whilst eating my lunch Shock.

Fluffycloudland77 · 21/06/2018 12:14

Thank you Botemp, ill stick with my old routine of salicylic acid and nicanamide in the morning and dab the powder on my pigmentation at night instead.

It seems too much for the rest of my face.

mintmagnummm · 21/06/2018 12:15

Pupsie are you trying to say my amazing gorgeous rats are putting you off your lunch?! 😂

EnidButton · 21/06/2018 13:02
