Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a lightbulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

I had to stop dairy JDSTER because it was affecting my immune system. A type of allergy. Made a huge difference to my health. The only thing I really miss is cheese (especially French cheeses and yes with milk - although have got used to almond milk in tea, not quite the same).

Mint - I am falling out off love with Frezyderm. I think it blocks my pores so going back to the Avene I mentioned. Never had any trouble with this but no idea how it is under make-up. Can you get samples of different SPFs and try?

Thanks ZoClueless - it's good to know that Skinoren is working for you.

Hello Mrs Dane Smile

SophieLion · 19/06/2018 18:53

tea with milk. (not "yes" with milk) BrewHmm

mintmagnummm · 19/06/2018 19:36

Sophie I'm sorry your falling out of love with frezyderm, it's so frustrating isn't it! I really am gutted about it because it was so amazing, I didn't need moisturiser with it, it melted into skin leaving no residue and it didn't make my skin oily or dry! I do think it was responsible for some breakouts though and obviously my eyes didn't like it!
I liked the avene anti ageing spf 50 but I couldn't use it without moisturiser underneath because when I tried it with just my mineral 89 it stung my face so my moisturiser must have acted like a barrier almost. Only problem is that my skin got way too oily using moisturiser with it!
I'm on the hunt now for the holy grail spf! If and when I find it I'll let you know!

Bluebell let me know how you get on with that neutrogena one, fingers crossed it works for u!

miffy2 · 19/06/2018 20:05

I have used DE tinted umbra spf for two days in a row now, without any foundation over it (but have dusted with powder as she is a greasy one!) and have to say I like it. No way would I go 'out' out without foundation over it but yesterday was sports day and today school tour so it was very casual. It protected my face very well in the strong sun we had yesterday so that was another good result.

Pupsiecola · 19/06/2018 20:28

Has anyone tried Cerave SPF?

Pupsiecola · 19/06/2018 20:48

Pickled I bought the Cerave moisturising cleanser too and I used it once. It stung like crazy. I think I'll use it in the shower instead.

DH is currently Stateside and is (hopefully) bringing me back a DE Bit C and a couple of Cerave PM moisturisers (hoping he can get them in target or CVS).

Bo I found your retinol sheet very informative and helpful. I've ordered the Pestle and Mortar. I'm keen to move on from the LRP. But spendy this month what with the DE as well 🙈. But I know that the DE will last me 4-5 months.

I'm not using the Frezyderm at all now. A good reminder of the need to be very happy with your SPF to use it daily (have reverted back to Bioderma.

Yes Tant re England game and referee 😡

In week three of my 6 45am exercise class and going strong 😀

TantricTwist · 19/06/2018 20:51

I'm not sure Frezyderm actually worked today for me as an SPF.

I usually apply Nars TM over it but today I ommitted the Nars and came home with quite flushed cheeks so I'm a tad annoyed.

I wasn't even in the sun that much as I was in and out of the car and buildings all day.

Maybe it slips off easier and I just need to reapply more often (I didnt actually reapply at all but I guess I can if not wearing Nars.

TantricTwist · 19/06/2018 20:54

Pupsie well done for keeping up your ridiculously early boot camp.

JDster and Enid Hamsters rock Grin

I was planning on putting my LRP SPF on this morning but as my face felt a bit tight I used the Frezyderm Hmm

mintmagnummm · 19/06/2018 21:12

Pupsie is the bioderma spf mineral?

EnidButton · 19/06/2018 21:50

I kind of want a hamster now. 🐹

TantricTwist · 19/06/2018 22:10

I've just applied the PC Retinol 1% - wish me luck Grin

cad186 · 19/06/2018 23:59

Mint I'm still looking for my perfect mineral spf. I'm currently using bareminerals prep step but it's a bit greasy. I've also used the bioderma photoderm mineral but its a bit white and i think it gives me spots. I am going to try the avene one next. Others on my list are derma e natural mineral sunscreen, heliocare mineral fluid and skinceuticals.

mintmagnummm · 20/06/2018 07:24

Cad hopefully one of us on here will find a great one soon! Please keep me posted on your trials and good luck!

I used the last bit of my avene anti ageing spf this morn without moisturiser (just mineral 89) and my skin felt like it was on fire for about 2 minutes!

PickledHoneybuzzard · 20/06/2018 09:08

Hmmm Pupsie, sorry you had the same reaction but glad it's not just me iyswim!
We use bar soap for washing so I might use the CeraVe as hand wash in the kitchen or something.

PickledHoneybuzzard · 20/06/2018 09:10

Tantric I want to know how you got on with the PC retinol? I love PC products, just think they are expensive in the UK.

botemp · 20/06/2018 14:06

Oh dear, I'm going to have to include hamsters into the next title now, aren't I? 🐹🐹🐹

Interesting Pickled, I had read that RF was mostly interesting for skin that had experienced fat loss and less so for progressive ageing/jowls. Is it straight RF that they use or is it a combination treatment?

The Cerave formulations for Europe are not the same, with the European launch they tweaked them slightly as the US versions all had parabens as their preservative system and that really doesn't sell well these days. AFAIK it's a slight change even though swapping out preservatives is not a one to one thing. It's just launched over here and no sighting of the PM either, the UK Skincare Reddit had a confirmation they'd be launching the PM end of April or something along those lines, don't know what's holding it up.

zo, it's a bit difficult to advise when you're using prescribed topicals. Whomever is prescribing it usually knows better, but in your case it was your GP, IIRC? They're probably a bit less clued in on actives and the like than a dermatologist. I think you can layer with either but just for safety's sake, I'd wait twenty minutes after applying your prescription. I'd suggest using it at night to get the most out of it for healing over red marks, the Melano CC can probably be used twice a day but anything in the 15-20% range would be excessive to use 2x a day, and could potentially make you go a bit orange Shock

Sophie, I've heard oat milk is quite a good replacement for milk in your tea. I have an ancient digestive system, I can only handle dairy if it's cultured and wheat if it's had a long ferment. Modern highly processed foods are my nemesis. Thankfully I was never the biggest fan of dairy (just yoghurt, the occasional bit of cheese and butter which are all cultured, well for butter it's a special variety) and there's plenty of non-wheat choices out there these days as well as sourdough, which is what I've been eating for most of my life anyhow, so it wasn't a massive adjustment.

TantricTwist · 20/06/2018 14:13

So turns out my face was not red from the Frezyderm and it not doing its protective job but just natural exertion.

I wasnt wearing Nars TM over it as usual so my natural redness just got redder as it does throughout the day and showed up.

I applied frezyderm again today because I dont react to it and I like it as a moisturiser and SPF so it's still my favourite SPF at the moment.

PC retinol went well, skin looked lovely this morning and no redness or peeling etc.

mintmagnummm · 20/06/2018 14:58

I'm going to be controversial now and say I prefer rats to hamsters 🤭

I will be using my frezyderm tomorrow but just being careful around my eyes. Am waiting for yet another spf to arrive and probably disappoint me yet again! I'm genuinely shocked at just how bad the Australian gold was on me considering how much hot and flashy raves about it!

TantricTwist · 20/06/2018 15:07

Ewww to rats and their long tails, sorry Mint but its a no from me

EnidButton · 20/06/2018 15:30

Rats can get huge though. I held one a long long time ago and he was heavy! Like a small dog.

mintmagnummm · 20/06/2018 15:39

whispers...I have 2 rats!!

SophieLion · 20/06/2018 17:03

I had a friend at uni who had a pet rat and actually it was really very sweet and friendly.

SophieLion · 20/06/2018 17:08

I like lattes with oat milk Bo! I've never actually tried it in tea but i can see it might work well as it's more bland than almond milk. I have a feeling that the oat milk brand I usually buy (Alpro) is a bit "creamy"

EnidButton · 20/06/2018 17:11

Photo please Mint Grin I don't think DH would be keen on me buying rats but I do miss having a pet in the house. I think it might be time for a dog again.

mintmagnummm · 20/06/2018 17:24

Sophie they are the best pets for children, I did my research lol and they really are adorable.

Enid I shall try and take a good pic of them later if I can
